@Crepidodera I had my eye on that NGC F15 1871-cc quarter since I noticed it in the archives from a 2003 Heritage sale. It just refused to turn up for sale. When it finally did, I wouldn't have paid the price it sold for. I still think it's one of the nicest looking circ. examples of the date, with or without CAC approval.

One night a month or so after I'd purchased the preceding coin, I was using the Heritage auction archive reference to get an idea of how many coins had sold in the past. Well, when I saw the listing for the following coin, I nearly got sick. Here are photos of my 1873-CC quarter before it was doctored.
When I contacted the dealer I purchased the coin from, he refused to give a refund. He suggested I take the matter up with PCGS. The dealer wasn't even interested in seeing the before and after photos of the doctored coin! PCGS really stepped up to the plate and gave me a full refund of my purchase price, thank you again PCGS!

1873 has the most coins issued of any year for seated quarters with 6 total. 1873 is my favorite year but it's love/hate. I don't consider the 1873-cc no arrows to have been released into circulation and don't consider it part of the regular series, much the same as the 1873-cc NA dime and 1876-cc 20c. For some reason, PCGS decided to include it in the standard registry set, unlike the other two coins. That's the part I hate.
I love the old west era circa 1873 and the variety of the coins: Open 3, closed 3, arrows, no arrows. It's a fascinating year.
XF40 - closed 3. This is a legitimately rare coin, and underrated. Here are the PCGS pop reports:

I also have a VF25 open 3 but it's not part of my registry set.
Here's an interesting variety, it's an 1876-cc rev 73. This is the exact reverse used on the ultra rare 73-cc NA. So I guess I have 5 1/2 of the 6 varieties for the year.
So glad you had a moment of indecision and let it go! It seems like and XF45 to me, so maybe that's why we both like it. No question it's got original skin, though it may be too thick for some people.

I would be very curious to learn what experiences you all might have had when you were looking for an 1875-s Seated Quarter. I bring this up because I have been seeking an attractive 75-s for several years now and have had this experience. I have come across no less than 9 75-s twenty cent pieces miss labeled as quarters. james

I've had the same experience with mislabeled 1875-S twenty cent pieces. When I was seeking a nice 1875-S quarter, I would quite often get excited, and then let down moments later. The 1875-S seated quarter isn't a common coin. Finding a nice original problem free example can be tough. Good luck in your search James!

It was originally graded AU50 by NGC, which is way too generous, then VF35 by PCGS, which is too low. And then CAC only gave it a green bean when it should have earned a gold bean. I would like to hear the argument that this coin is anything but XF.

This is Ex Bob Simpson. US Patterns.com noted most likely only 3 examples are known ( at lease identified via auctions going back to 1977).

Well this will be my last donation to the post as I am out of liberty seated quarters to share.
This 1876 is another pattern struck using the regular dies of the year but struck in copper.
I was attracted to the one as it has more reddish in hand than the BN designation suggest and is consider a Rarity R8 - with only 2 pieces known.
This piece was traced back to the the Lester Merkin Sale Sept 1967), lot 535 and The Stacks June Sale in 1986, lot 513.
