On to 1871, my favorite year in the series.

PCGS AU55 - purchased from Lenny Rizzo in 2014.

PCGS XF40 CAC - from a Heritage auction in 2016.

PCGS VF35 CAC - from a Heritage auction in 2020.

PCGS XF45 CAC - purchased from Silicon Valley Coins in 2022, the current coin in my set. Perfect XF45!

PCGS AG3 CAC - purchased from Mike Verhulst in 2022.

NGC F15 - from a GFRC auction in 2022, the current coin in my set. After never owning an 1871-CC quarter, I purchased two in 2022. The rarest collectable liberty seated quarter.

PCGS VF25 CAC - purchased from the Carolina collection in 2015.

PCGS VF25 CAC - originally from a Heritage auction in 2019, repurchased from Vern Sebby in 2021, the current coin in my set. I love the look of this coin!

    1871-s PCGS VG10

    1871-cc PCGS F15, but should be F12

One of two dates other than the 1879-1890 years that I have no examples. No wonder you guys bought them all!
I had what I thought was a nice Philly purchased from Rich Uhrich but it came back twice as cleaned. Never owned a cc or the San Fran. version.

@Crepidodera I had my eye on that NGC F15 1871-cc quarter since I noticed it in the archives from a 2003 Heritage sale. It just refused to turn up for sale. When it finally did, I wouldn't have paid the price it sold for. I still think it's one of the nicest looking circ. examples of the date, with or without CAC approval.

Please post your 1872 quarters, another very interesting year!

PCGS AU50 CAC - purchased from Harry Laibstain in 2014. Wish I could get this one back.

PCGS VF35 CAC - purchased from Lenny Rizzo in 2019.

NGC VF30 CAC - purchased from DLRC in 2022, the current coin in my set. Upgrade desired.

PCGS F12 - purchased from Brian Greer in 2016.

PCGS G6 CAC - purchased from Holt Rarities in 2019, a really choice low grade coin!

PCGS F12 CAC - purchased from Darrell Low in 2021, the current coin in my set.

PCGS VF20 CAC - purchased from the Carolina collection in 2016.

PCGS F15 CAC - purchased from Mike Verhulst in 2020.

PCGS VF30 CAC - purchased from Liz Coggan in 2022, the current coin in my set. The second highest graded CAC approved 1872-S quarter after a single MS66 example! The rarest S mint liberty seated quarter and my favorite coin in the set.

On to 1873, which is arguably the most important year in the liberty seated quarter series. With two types, five different coins (six if you count the closed 3 variety), a rarity, a prohibitive rarity, and a common coin, this date has something for everyone. Get ready for a ridiculous 15 quarters, and the story of a doctored coin.

    PCGS VF30 - from a Heritage auction in 2011.

PCGS XF40 - from an eBay auction in 2014.

PCGS XF40 CAC - purchased from Alex Ralston in 2018.

PCGS VF30 - purchased from DLRC in 2022.

PCGS F15 CAC - from a DLRC auction in 2022, the current coin in my set.

PCGS VG8 CAC closed 3 - from a DLRC auction in 2024, the current coin in my set. I don't usually collect varieties, but I liked the look of this one.

PCGS AU50 - from an Ebay auction in 2014.

PCGS AU53 CAC - from an eBay auction in 2016.

PCGS XF40 CAC - purchased from Alex Ralston in 2021, the current coin in my set.

PCGS VF25 CAC - purchased from a western dealer in 2015.

One night a month or so after I'd purchased the preceding coin, I was using the Heritage auction archive reference to get an idea of how many coins had sold in the past. Well, when I saw the listing for the following coin, I nearly got sick. Here are photos of my 1873-CC quarter before it was doctored.

When I contacted the dealer I purchased the coin from, he refused to give a refund. He suggested I take the matter up with PCGS. The dealer wasn't even interested in seeing the before and after photos of the doctored coin! PCGS really stepped up to the plate and gave me a full refund of my purchase price, thank you again PCGS!

PCGS VF30 CAC - purchased from Steve Fischer in 2016, and repurchased from Vern Sebby in 2021, the current coin in my set.

PCGS F15 CAC - purchased from Lenny Rizzo in 2016.

PCGS XF40 - purchased from GFRC in 2020.

PCGS VF35 CAC - from a DLRC auction in 2022..

PCGS XF40 CAC - purchased from Liz Coggan in 2023, the current coin in my set.

1873 has the most coins issued of any year for seated quarters with 6 total. 1873 is my favorite year but it's love/hate. I don't consider the 1873-cc no arrows to have been released into circulation and don't consider it part of the regular series, much the same as the 1873-cc NA dime and 1876-cc 20c. For some reason, PCGS decided to include it in the standard registry set, unlike the other two coins. That's the part I hate.

I love the old west era circa 1873 and the variety of the coins: Open 3, closed 3, arrows, no arrows. It's a fascinating year.

XF40 - closed 3. This is a legitimately rare coin, and underrated. Here are the PCGS pop reports:

    71-cc - 60
    72-s - 63
    73-cc - 64
    73cl - 69
    70-cc - 80
    71-s - 81
    66 - 83
    72-cc - 93

VF35 - another yellow tinted trueview, sheesh

VF25 - This is the star coin in my set. Perfect original coin.

    VF25

I also have a VF25 open 3 but it's not part of my registry set.

Here's an interesting variety, it's an 1876-cc rev 73. This is the exact reverse used on the ultra rare 73-cc NA. So I guess I have 5 1/2 of the 6 varieties for the year. ;)

    VF25

Almost missed the 1872 ... here is my contribution.
Again a pattern struck using the regular dies of the year but in Copper.

This is Ex Bob Simpson. US Patterns.com noted most likely only 3 examples are known ( at lease identified via auctions going back to 1977).

Ron, I remember that 1873 NA quarter well. A very nice coin that I wish I'd never sold!

So glad you had a moment of indecision and let it go! It seems like and XF45 to me, so maybe that's why we both like it. No question it's got original skin, though it may be too thick for some people.

After the excitement of 1873, it's back to business with 1874, ho hum.

PCGS XF45 CAC - purchased from Tom Hubschman in 2019.

PCGS VF30 CAC - from a DLRC auction in 2022.

PCGS VF35 CAC gold - from a GFRC auction in 2022, the current coin in my set.

PCGS VF35 CAC - originally purchased from Harry Laibstain in 2016, repurchased from Alex Ralston in 2018.

NGC AU58 CAC - purchased from Liz Coggan in 2022, the current coin in my set.

1874 PCGS AU58 - a sneaky, scarce issue that I had a hard time finding. I bid on this particular coin in an auction some years ago, failed, and ended up paying nearly twice the price for it about 5 years later. D'Oh!! It's brighter and looks nicer than my photographs.

1874-s PCGS MS63 - purchased raw from the album. It has nice luster and I got the lighting all wrong for the photo.

I would be very curious to learn what experiences you all might have had when you were looking for an 1875-s Seated Quarter. I bring this up because I have been seeking an attractive 75-s for several years now and have had this experience. I have come across no less than 9 75-s twenty cent pieces miss labeled as quarters. james

I've had the same experience with mislabeled 1875-S twenty cent pieces. When I was seeking a nice 1875-S quarter, I would quite often get excited, and then let down moments later. The 1875-S seated quarter isn't a common coin. Finding a nice original problem free example can be tough. Good luck in your search James!

    Please post your 1877 quarters.

PCGS XF40 CAC - from an eBay auction in 2014.
    +

PCGS AU53 CAC - purchased from Lenny Rizzo in 2022, the current coin in my set.

PCGS XF40 CAC - -purchased from JJ Teaparty in 2014.

PCGS VF35 CAC - from a Great Collections auction in 2022. This coin is a great example of grading inconsistencies between companies. It was originally graded AU50 by NGC, which is way too generous, then VF35 by PCGS, which is too low. And then CAC only gave it a green bean when it should have earned a gold bean. I would like to hear the argument that this coin is anything but XF.

PCGS AU50 CAC - also from a Great Collections auction in 2022, the current coin in my set.

PCGS AU55 CAC - purchased from Bryce Millar IN 2016.

NGC AU58 CAC - purchased from Joe Hacker in 2022, the current coin in my set.
