B has had a slight cleaning

There are things I don’t like about both. I will say some details are a bit more visible on B like the diagonal and vertical reverse bands. I make it a practice of keeping coins I like. If I wanted a 42/1, I would sell both examples and purchase a higher grade example with a CAC sticker…preferably an example that comes with a nice TrueView. If you are an NGC fan, one that has a PhotoVision photo associated with it. Either way, higher grade + CAC sticker + quality photo.

Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

I would not keep either coin. Wait for a better example to come along, and it will.

If I had to choose, I would keep A. Longer term, I would find a more original coin to replace A.

I don’t like either / both dates can be obtained BU and when it comes to Mercury dimes, I like ‘em shiny!!

First coin is original, second coin was cleaned and retoned (but a little better detail). I'd pick #1

I would not keep either as others have said. Both don't look original. Would look for a more original looking example.

The first one does not look completely original, IMO, and it seems like others agree. It seems more original, so I’d also keep #1 if forced to choose, but as others have said, I’d eschew both and wait for a better example.

I thought I had posted this last night when i saw your post, but guess I didn't as it was in the drafts

Easy choice for me ... A

B has digs in the obverse field behind neck and looks to have been wiped "more"

Agree with the consensus here... I'd always see those hairlines on B. A looks like it's had a bath, but not a hard scrubbing like B got.

If I were to keep one, it would be A. That being said, if you sold both, you could likely get a better specimen (one you would really like) with the funds. Cheers, RickO

While I agree that neither choice is, uh, choice, it's somewhere between disingenuous and absurdly unconscious for you to so blithely assert that everyone can/should buy this special coin in "BU" condition.

I preferred "B" until I saw the reverse. It has those unfortunate parallel cleaning lines running down it.

Between these two, I like A better.

For what it’s worth, I had a similar 42/1 not long ago. I never considered it a mere “hole filler,” but I never really loved it either. In the end, I went the upgrade route.

I happened upon a nice specimen that was not uncirculated but pleasing, and think you might consider similar as it was a slabbed AU55 from ATS. Prob needs acetone bath:

These always seem to lack eye appeal. First looks better.

Probably A, I don’t like the vertical hairline scratches on B

The obvious hairlines on B are a turn off to me. I vote A for now, but would sell both and buy a higher graded problem free specimen.

Everyone thank you for your comments.
Personally I thought B was cleaned however it still received a straight grade.
I will get rid of B and keep A until I find a nicer looking higher grade coin. Once I do I will get rid of A. Unfortunately, I don’t see higher grade coins often not just for the 42/41 but also the 42/41d.

Nice grades; I'm surprised, especially at A.
