Type 2 Gold Dollar newp - GTG
Very excited to add this 1854 type 2 gold dollar to my gold type set.
I'll spare the commentary and instead let you all take a shot at guessing the grade, as is tradition!

MS-64, unusually sharp strike, especially for an 1854.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. One of the nicest Type II gold dollars I've ever seen, the strike is extraordinary.

Very nice and tough coin. Is lack of luster on the cheek normal for uncs?I think what you're seeing there is a photography artifact. The slab had some scratches, including a flaw right there over the cheek. I polished it but I think the lighter color you're seeing there is because of the slab.

Alright everyone, a lot of correct guesses here, and its been almost 3 hours so here is the reveal...
When I saw this coin it didn't take me long to figure out a way to come up with the $$!
It glows in hand, strong luster, great strike, absolutely the nicest type-2 gold dollar that I have ever seen. I am thrilled to be able to add it to my set.
With GTG threads I have a pretty strong track record of everyone guessing a point low, so since everyone thought 64, maybe it's a 65 candidate?
Much nicer than my type 1 in 64+!6 -

Very nice looking type 2! As others have said, unusually well struck for this date.

It looks like a nice coin, and if you submit it a few times it could come back as a 64+, but I'd probably leave it alone. There's something about owning a very nice coin for the assigned grade. The coin is what it is, and a different label won't change it.

I'm also late but I would've guessed 63+. Nice purchase.
I collect world proof sets, coins featuring composers, mid-20th century U.S. proof coins, U.S. type coins, and whatever else I want.

My Type 2 is 63+ with CAC, and the difference between coins is clearly night and day! I bought mine as a 63, thought it was real nice, so I sent it in for Reconsideration, and got the plus. Absolutely if that grader saw your coin right before my coin, no way would I have gotten the plus.
Perhaps consider Reconsideration? They’re having a Quarterly Special for that service - pay for four, get one free, but all must be in the same tier. If you do that, even though the cert number is supposed to stay the same with an upgrade, I suggest you state that request on the submission form. If you get a plus, then for $5 or so, CAC will automatically reapply their sticker, since they ignore plus grades. If by chance you get an upgrade to a 65, keep in mind that CAC would have to then feel your coin is solid as a 65 for them to resticker the coin, even though the cert number remains the same. On the PCGS submission form you have a choice, where if you want, you can choose to only accept upgrades with a plus. You may, or may not want to choose that.

Here’s my 63+ with CAC, which as noted, pales in comparison to your 64 (the actual luster on my coin is much stronger than shown in the True View).

@winesteven After your post and further inspection, I don't know man. When enlarging the OP's coin I'm seeing a lot of small hits in the fields along with some wear. And not the luster that yours and comparable grades have. So, I believe the strong strike is what got it to 64 or kept it from 63 and she's a true 64 CAC.

Although it is tough to capture in still images, the luster on my coin is really excellent.
It captures light in a way that is similar to other gold coins that I have in higher grades. You can get this kind of luster in a nice 64 but usually with a few more hits. Up close, yes it has a couple of marks, but I have seen much worse on other gold in 65.
But anyway, I am probably not going to submit the coin for upgrade consideration. Why? I'm keeping it! Why risk shipping back and forth to PCGS and CAC?
If I eventually sell it I would see if I can get at least a plus to maximize return. But for now its a super coin with a spot in my collection!

Wonderful coin! My guess was 64+, and she looks deserving of that. Love the clashes and the color and the strike and the surfaces. She's got a lot going for her!
