AT'd in the Holder ?

There's no way this is NT. I cant imagine this got by PCGS graders. So I have to assume it was toned in the holder.

Up for auction in Heritage's 2022 January 31 Attractively Toned US Coins Showcase Auction #60245

Thoughts?

I agree with AT, but I think it was straight graded as opposed to being altered in the holder.

I'm no expert on toning patterns but that is sure pretty. No slab is totally airtight, so I guess it's possible. I remember a few years ago some guy was caught toning silver coins in first generation PCGS rattler slabs which are the least airtight of any slab. It was hypothesized that he used a vacuum chamber to suck the air out of the slabs and then introduced a high sulfur gas to replace the air within the slab. One of the forum detectives discovered the fraud when he compared some of his toned coins with the pictures of the same coins in auction archives which showed that they were originally blast white. The toning he created was generally unattractive brown and blotchy.

No image when you look up the cert number, so it would be difficult to tell.

AT, this coin has been gassed in the slab.

I don’t think the coin looks NT, and I also don’t think it’s attractive.

It has the same color progression and area covered as seen on EDM toning but the colors look smoother here.

Peace dollars just don't come like that naturally, my vote is AT. How it was AT'd? I'll leave that to the doctors to discuss.

That is one ugly AT job, but I'm sure it will sell for big money.

That shade of blue to violet to orange in tight concentric patterns with rapid shifts in color makes me think that it may have been heat induced. I also can’t rule out an electrochemical etiology. On many pieces like this you see a small patch of toning away from the primary toning that looks like a place that could be the site of an electrode.

Just another reason why PCGS should image every coin as part of the grading process.

Coins can have something done to them, get slabbed, and then turn in the slab. Years ago, Don Willis told me that was why PCGS no longer guaranteed RD copper. People were 'making' RD Lincoln cents, and although they looked fine when they were slabbed, six weeks to two months later, they changed color in holder.

We don't hear about the best coin doctors. Only the ones whose work becomes suspect.

What ever happened to him? He doesn’t post much anymore although he did for at least a couple years after the controversy.

If it was AT'd in the holder, to get the concentric moon it would have to be from a small hole I would think. There is some sort of blemish on the holder reverse off of the ER of America.

The other possibilities are toning continuation after slabbing from something done just before grading and photos juiced some.

The colors are reminiscent of this coin currently for sale on Ebay...

Or it was AT’d in a different holder and then sent for reholdering.

Would they re-holder a compromised slab or questionable coin without having a grader or the finalizer giving them glance?

Would they re-holder a compromised slab or questionable coin without having a grader or the finalizer giving them glance??

there are alternatives --- re-holder the coin, buy the coin from the submitter or prove fraud against who?? I think in almost all cases it would be re-holdered.

How can you tell the toning is artificial? Either way I think it is fairly attractive.

Isn't there an unwritten rule that we don't slag coins coming up for auction?

Almost all gassed coins involve a very common date in a lower grade to minimize financial risk if it doesn't work out.

A 1925 Peace $ in 63 is the perfect coin to experiment on.

Edynamicmarketing on eBay. A few years back he had quite a few of these that were gassed in the slab.

The example from eBay that we’re not to comment on does resemble the results achieved with hard boiled eggs and a coin in a plastic container 😉
