Oh these won’t go to auction- these are being scooped up by the same deep pocket clients Ian bought those other monster coins for a few months back.

There is ungodly sums to be spent out there. This is why we have been saying to take some profits. Once everyone’s tummies are full and the money stops flowing, it could be very rocky. We’ve seen this happen before.

The top coins weren’t auctioned by GC, they were purchased by GC. It’s a testament to the type of relationships Ian can build.

He sold the coins for very, very strong premiums. A few million incentive didn’t hurt. The dime sold at auction for $2m, the dollar for $3.5m, and the nickel for $4.5m and many thought the latter was extremely strong when it sold last.

Bitcoin! Perhaps Bruce was enticed by the PCGS and Great Collections announcement of the $48 million 1000 BTC Casascius coin

More seriously, only Bruce can answer this question, but we do have some insight from Laura's blog article on profit taking as mentioned. Laura is predicting the market will get difficult, so why not get out now if you can?

More generally, the highest end coins seem to change hands often and quickly. I think this may have to do with how much money is tied up in the coins and the opportunity cost of holding them. Check out the owners for the 1913 Liberty Nickel and 1794 silver plug dollar here:

And finally, many collectors like the thrill of the chase. This was mentioned in article John M. Glionna wrote with Bruce in the Las Vegas Review Journal last year. Presumably, Bruce reviewed the article before it was published. This article was focused in the 1794 silver plug dollar, but the general thought process of the chase vs. ownership may apply to other coins as well.

I suppose one doesn't get to this level of collecting without being a shrewd businessman as well. If the opportunity comes up to take a couple million dollars in profit, I see no shame in doing so. There are plenty of other trophy coins out there if the urge to collect is still there.
