Holy Trinity Sold- GC

Looks like Bruce’s box of 20 got a little lighter over Thanksgiving- nothing wrong with taking a profit when an offer comes along

You have to applaud GC for being the ones picked to auction these coins vs Heritage, Stacks, etc. Congrats to Great Collections!

The real Holy Trinity is priceless.
Oh these won’t go to auction- these are being scooped up by the same deep pocket clients Ian bought those other monster coins for a few months back.
congrats to TDN, big collectors doing big things. I can't wait to see what he sets his eyes/interests on next.

Amen!
they are certainly putting their selling where their market report is
I saw this too. This is a monumental accomplishment for the new owner. One fell swoop!
Box of three! Wow. Hell of an acquisition.
Just wow!
Big congrats to GC!!!

I'm a bit surprised, my impression was that he really enjoyed owning those.

I wonder if these are going to the owner of the 1933 $20? In any event, congratulations to TDN and the buyer!

They were purchased to hold, right? Not to auction? Need to know if I have to don my failed underbidder hat again.
Awesome purchase, Ian!
Indeed, the true holy trinity.
You buy these at the same time, how do you decide which one to look at first?
Is it just me or did Great Collections go from an eBay-alternative to the top of the numismatic food chain in, like, a year?

Congrats to the new owner, @tradedollarnut, @ianrussell , and Laura!
The coins Ian has been showing lately are amazing! Imagine if the same GC owner had all these GC coins:
The top coins weren’t auctioned by GC, they were purchased by GC. It’s a testament to the type of relationships Ian can build.
Yep, Ian is doing work.
Am I the only one kind of sad to see him sell these?

Every collector can collect their own way. If Bruce is happy, I’m happy.
Congrats TDN!

Am I the only one kind of disturbed to see upside down reverse coin photos?
Why sell so fast if you are not truly in need of funds?
I mean were does one go after that US coin collecting wise?
NFL: Buffalo Bills & Green Bay Packers
Not disturbed, but it does look weird. Maybe they should flip it next time.

He sold the coins for very, very strong premiums. A few million incentive didn’t hurt. The dime sold at auction for $2m, the dollar for $3.5m, and the nickel for $4.5m and many thought the latter was extremely strong when it sold last.
Interesting.... These high value rarities are enjoying the abundance of disposable cash in todays economic world. A truly good time to move them. Cheers, RickO
Bitcoin! Perhaps Bruce was enticed by the PCGS and Great Collections announcement of the $48 million 1000 BTC Casascius coin
More seriously, only Bruce can answer this question, but we do have some insight from Laura's blog article on profit taking as mentioned. Laura is predicting the market will get difficult, so why not get out now if you can?
More generally, the highest end coins seem to change hands often and quickly. I think this may have to do with how much money is tied up in the coins and the opportunity cost of holding them. Check out the owners for the 1913 Liberty Nickel and 1794 silver plug dollar here:
And finally, many collectors like the thrill of the chase. This was mentioned in article John M. Glionna wrote with Bruce in the Las Vegas Review Journal last year. Presumably, Bruce reviewed the article before it was published. This article was focused in the 1794 silver plug dollar, but the general thought process of the chase vs. ownership may apply to other coins as well.

Wow, what a purchase.
Congratulation to the new owner(s) and GC.

A great thing about Bruce and the hobby is that he gets picked up in the regular, non-numismatic press.

I suppose one doesn't get to this level of collecting without being a shrewd businessman as well. If the opportunity comes up to take a couple million dollars in profit, I see no shame in doing so. There are plenty of other trophy coins out there if the urge to collect is still there.
