Share your recent purchase and let us know why you got that item

I know that we have other threads to share your most recent purchases, but I also find it interesting to find out why that particular coin/token. Sometimes it’s the coin, sometimes it’s the situation, sometimes it pure impulse.
For me, this arrived today. I have posted that I work on a gold type set. I am getting down to either upgrading or adding a few very pricey(for me) coins. In order to satisfy the cravings for a new item, while saving the funds for say a Dahlonega coin, I decided that maybe I would add a classic gold commem. To be honest, I always kind of hated them…However, recently, I have begun to appreciate them and I thought the prices for what you get were actually reasonable compared to other items I want in this hot market. I have been looking to add this commem. or a 1916/17 McKinley for about a month, as I thought some were reasonably priced, I saw a number of dealers that had nice ms63 coins available, but I thought the price was a tad high…This coin came up at auction, I bid slightly higher than the coins I saw at ms63, partly to follow and establish a better price baseline, but also hoping I might win. About 7 days later, it gets added to the gold type collection. Here it is…
I have some others coming soon, but they have a totally different reason on why they were added.
I hope others will share.

This one because I'm trying to put a complete set of these extremely high relief and very well done medals together.
Most recent purchase. Literally, 7 hrs. Ago.
2014 Maple Leaf
Reasons:
1. Just look at it!
2. The 9999 purity
3. Love the fine lines, obverse and reverse
and #4. Don't have any Maple Leafs.

--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.Got these 2 weeks ago, not too recent but my most recent and I am still vary exited about them.

I was at the Manchester coin expo and was looking to buy an old proof. I Baugh the 1882 PR 64 Nickel because I found it vary attractive. I then met up with a dealer who I befriended at the previous show and we chatted about coins for about half an hour. I showed him my recent purchase and my 1921 peace dollar. He told me that at this time it’s best to sell while there is the 2021 hype for the commemoratives and buy another when the price drops in a couple of years. At first I was vary apprehensive about selling the peace dollar because I had just gotten it and really liked it but as I thought about his advice it seemed more to the better choice for me as to sell my 21 peace make a small profit and buy a more exclusive coin. So I when to another dealer to sell since my dealer friend said he was not interested in buying 21 peace’s only selling them, and used the $ plus a few Morgan’s to buy myself the seated liberty quarter or 64 CAC pcgs
I can see why you're very excited. Nice looking coins.
Recent, though not the most recent...But very, very special to me. Cheers, RickO
My most recent…
I got it for two reasons. One was because I was a bit disappointed at my last coin show where I expected to get several gold dollars (been selling off my non gold to build up funds) but there wasn’t much there.
Two was because I was having surgery on Thursday and I wanted something to look forward to. I got it off of eBay and paid a bit more than I wanted to but it’s a great coin.
Nice coins here ... and interesting stories.
Mine is not a coin, but my other addiction, US Large Size Currency ... and this is my most recent anything, as it just arrived today.
The person that sold it to me (who I know from previous business) was on vacation when I inquired, but he responded, knew and described the note well (it was a NEWP for his inventory which just returned from being graded), and we hammered out a respectable deal via email.
Why did I go after it? A fine balance of quality and rarity.
It is attractive, well-centered with good registration, all there for the grade … nice fresh paper and good ink ... and honestly, almost as rare as hen's teeth.
Currently, of the certified notes, this is the runner up for the Fr #, but certainly appears nicer than the highest graded one (a 58 flat) which images in auction archives exist for.
“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

I've been lusting over this exact coin for 10 years. It's by far the nicest known but I couldn't justify a higher bid in 2011. Due to a language barrier, I had been under the impression that a friend owned it (it turned out he just _wanted _it which he phrased multiple times as "this is _MY _coin"...)
When I saw it was coming back around to auction, I was shocked but excited. COVID pushed the auction back by a year so I had to wait even more...
Finally, on the day, I was told that there were several big players bidding on it and the sentiment was: "good luck, you'll need it".
Thankfully, luck was in my favor and I bought it, and I just arrived yesterday in time for me to snap a few quick pictures:
It is a very artistic, novel depiction of the goddess Europa sitting in a tree near an eagle which symbolizes Zeus. It was minted by the Greek city Gortyna as a means of indicating their superiority over the nearby city of Knossos:
So this was the other purchase that was in the mail. The other area I dabble in is patriotic CWTs. I buy both raw and slabbed, but in the end usually will have the raw slabbed.
This acquisition was done due to a combination of reasons.
Reason 1 was that One of the prime CWT dealers has been having a nice run of tokens, which were all slabbed by our host, and I have been very pleased with tokens and the the tru views from the recent tokens. As the run may be coming to an end, there were a few tokens that I still wanted to get as they would match my collection well.
Reason 2 as I also buy raw, I was getting ready to slab6 tokens. When reviewing them, I liked them all but didn’t love them. Although I struggled, I decided that I would rather have the two new tokens rather than slabbing 6 that I only liked.
Reason 3 being able to work with dealers. Initial trade in offer was a little lower than desired, however through conversing with the dealer, a fair trade was made.
Here are the new CWT’s.
I just picked up 2 of these from the Crown Mint. I consider them bullion, but I like the fact that they are monetized and they are square and because they are Coca Cola and because they aren’t colorized. I also just checked completed auctions on eBay and multiple people are buying them for $60 to $75 dollars because they don’t know you can still get them for $49.95 from the Crown Mint. I figure I can sell them in the future for at least what I bought them for but probably more because they have multiple coolness factors appealing to more than just bullion stackers. I don’t want to buy bullion right now because my silver stack was bought much cheaper than today’s price of silver, so I only want bullion if it has something else going for it other than silver content.

Those are such nice little coins. I used to have a date set of the Type 1 but they were traded off for another coin. I plan on doing another date set as soon as I complete my Indian Head quarter eagle date set.
BTW-your coin is a beauty!
I don't have an image but my newest addition is one of the 2020 Hubble dollars. I've been fascinated by the Hubble and it's pictured for most of my life and had to get the coin honoring it.
I also built a model of it last year but broke part of in the process, unfortunately.
I’m building a set of toned Franklin’s and thought this one had fully original luster…LOL

I bought these on release day. I live in NH and also a lifelong gamer so I felt obligated! I will not grade any of these. Most are in bad shape from sloshing around in the bag I guess. So I will hand them out for tips or etc over time. Seems like most don't care for the design but I like it. The downside is most people have no clue what this is (or probably any innovation dollar) so makes them pretty awkward to spend.

This one...I bought it because it was the 4th of July and the snipers were busy doing something else. My place-holder bid ending up winning.

Proof sets are my little addiction.
Plucked this one from a show a couple months back.
Coulda just bought one, but my first raw Cameo from a set.

Very wise choice in dropping those common dollars for that beautiful seated proof!!
2010 Cook Islands $5 "Saint Helena of Constantinople" with this coin added to registry set, "100 Greatest Women on Coins" - still #2. 1/0.

Because I always wanted one and the price was right.
1952-D Franklin with fully original mint luster….

I agree! After owning a 66 Oregon for ten years I finally broke down and bought a different year 67.
I owned one of these about 30 years ago. A non-collecting friend mentioned he wanted one to frame and hang in his new house. They aren't particularly rare so I sold it to him for what I paid ($15) thinking I'd replace it in my collection later. I eventually did get one but by then the price had more than doubled. Recently I was going to send it to PMG but noticed a couple of problems that I didn't remember seeing before. Namely it had remnants of being hinged much like stamp collectors do and someone had written a small number in pencil on the back. I didn't send it in because of the problems but sold it and bought this one. Around here we call them Wilmington Waterfront Notes. It's hard to see in this picture but "Wilmington, NC" is just above "RTH" of NORTH.
Still in the mail, but will be the perfect addition to my double-sided toner set of silver Washington Quarters that I've been slowly building for the past year or two. I paid about a 50% premium for the color and eye appeal. This will be my 23rd out of 83 needed for the set. Here's a sense of what some of the other coins in the group look like:
Nothing is as expensive as free money.

Both showed up last night. I’m slowly building the classic commemoratives and I love the incuse maple leaf design.
I’m not a huge commemorative fan but the Oregon Trail and Texas are beautiful coins.
Just another day in the life.
I needed a Saint for my gold type set, but wanted one that was better than just generic gold price. This one fit the bill:

My YouTube Channel
I like rattlers and didn’t have one of these.
I sold all of my album sets over the past year to focus on a gold type set. I recently acquired this 1853 $10 PCGS AU58 CAC which fits my new collecting goal very well.

Still learning to recognize a double die and starting a collection. So I made the 1995 DDO my first purchase.

I got this one Saturday. It was my first $3 coin. I got it to close out my type set but also because, in spite of their general availability, they are kinda scarce. It has a good amount of luster and I think at AU 58 it has a good chance at a bean if I send it in.
For myself, I went out and bought the entire Type Set to help fill a bigger Capital Plastics Expanded 20th Century Type Set.

Goal: All uncirculated.
The '27 Saint is fantastic in color and luster but a bit lower in grade. Perhaps I update that with this other newp a 1908 NM in 63. The '27 is about an MS62 and much flashier!
'08 NM PC63

'27 Saint (raw state)

@TurtleCat I really love your first $3 gold piece... and it is a '74. I just obtained my first $3 gold as well. Wanted uncirculated so had to go common. Learned these are not cheap across the entire series. The newp won't fit in the big Type though:

A Barber Quartet is made up of Nickels, Dimes, Quarters, and Halves.
Bought this because I like it! Just starting to add commemoratives to my collection and I am just going to buy the ones I like. This is the third one for that collection.
