Lets spread our wings a bit! 1914-D ebay listing, I'll call this FAKE! Yes, No?

Lots of tool work around that one and it still looks to have signs of the cross bar of the 4?
For fun I thought I'd just see if I could find a fake in something other than a 1909S-VDB, I didn't think I would actually find one and then this one turns up!

One of the worst attempts at a fake that I have ever seen. There are better uses for a Dremel than this.

Please explain why this is a fake.

I believe it's an attempt to turn a 1944-D into a 1914-D by shaving away parts of the 4.

Clearly a '44 D.
Agree, bad attempt on a 44

This ...
So, this is a GENUINE coin, but NOT a genuine 14-D. It's all about the digit placements in the date on this hack job

and just think, if they hadn't been so savy to scratch the rest of the coin, attempting to disguise distract us from their fine handiwork, it just might have fooled us.
Not a 1914 D Lincoln cent.
Good point!
On this verity of a fake/counterfeit they've taken a 1944-D and they've tooled away the forward section of the first 4 leaving only the vertical straight side of the 4 faking the appearance of a 1.
But, it also leaves a much wider gap between the 9 and the 1 and a slop job will leave a tiny little cross where the cross bar of the 4 was as in the case of this altered 44-D
Another thing to look for on an altered attempt of the 44-D is it will have the designers initials VDB below the shoulder, a genuine 14-D will not have that VDB on it anywhere. The lack of quality of the picture makes this detail not visible.

Additionally, the mint mark is MUCH larger than on a genuine '14-D.
Not fake-just a crude alteration as has been pointed out.
In addition, 1914-D Cents did not have V.D.B. on Lincolns shoulder.
Check the shoulder of the altered coin and you'll find it there.
The 14 looks suspicious
I think it’s actually 1944 d with the 4 scratched away
That is definitely an altered '44D cent....Still a remnant of the cross bar.... tooling marks... spacing between numerals... and still listed. Cheers, RickO

Thanks for the information as to how this coin has been altered.
My first look at the coin and I knew it was wrong due to the spacing between 9 and the "1".
I did not recognize it as an altered date. Your pictures showed the hidden truth.
Thanks again.

No closeup necessary on THIS one!

Altered date to represent a rare date coin.
Ever notice that most of the altered and fake coins are auctions from a seller with very low feedback-usually below 100?
I love that you guys post this information about fakes. I am learning a lot and have a new aspect to the hobby, looking for fakes on Ebay!
On ebay, you can find them everyday.
Yep! I have noticed that.

I'm surprised that the listing is still up?

Good point. The designer's initials VDB was removed from the reverse and wasn't added back until 1918 when it was put on the truncation of Lincoln's bust. Sometimes the counterfeiter will tool-off the VDB when altering a 1944-D cent.

At a glance, the 2nd 1 is too large, then after this would grab attention, the remainder of the 4 and spacing between the 9 and 1 is obvious, besides the initials. Shame people fall for this. So sad that organizations allow numismatic sell items without a plan to verify them, at least randomly and especially for new sellers.

Did anyone bother to message the seller? There's a small chance that he doesn't know it's a fake.

He knows darn well it's altered. Though he keeps claiming it's a real 1914-D
the listing seems to be gone
