You won a coin at auction...how long does it usually take to get it?

MidLifeCrisisMidLifeCrisis Posts: 10,561 ✭✭✭✭✭

If you win a coin from an established online auction site such as Heritage, Stack's Bowers, David Lawrence Rare Coins, etc., how long does it usually take to get the coin?

I'm not including eBay because each auction is from a different seller and shipping times probably vary greatly.

I'm more interested in those that run frequent auctions and presumably have a set process in place.

Yeah, about a week from payment for Heritage as well.

It all depends. My first win from heritage in a long time resulted in about a 4 week wait. When I later did a BIN from them about 2 weeks. From eBay it generally ranges from 5-10 business days. From DLRC it’s usually 2-3 days. Of course it helps that they are only about 450 miles from me.

There's no single answer to this.

Most Heritage coins I get in 7-10 days or so from their weekly auctions. If they have a major on-site auction somewhere, it can be longer. Similar with Stack's. I once had a coin take a month from one of their Hong Kong auctions.

Great Collections is usually less than a week.

S/B just took about 10+ days after invoicing to get things shipped.

Days, weeks, a month or more. There is not a solid answer.

I've had them overnighted to me the next day (even before paying) and, other times, a week to 10 days.

If you prove to Heritage you are quick pay, they will ship in less than a week.

It all depends on USPS. What use to take 3 or 4 days now takes 2 maybe 3 weeks.
I've seen one of mine go from TX to PR to NY,NJ and finally to PA.

Can't even blame USPS. It was done combination of Easy ship and DHL

As off late Heritage has been shipping very quickly. I think they actually read their surveys. Kudos to them.

I've bought many coins from GC and always had the coin within 5 days. Haven't bought from Heritage in years and never from DLRC, so can't help you there.

I believe alot depends on where you live in relation to the auction site. I'm on Ohio. GC for me the following Saturday so 6 days. Heritage 6 to 8 days. David Lawrence 7 to 10 days. I make payment as soon as the auction is over or as soon as I receive the invoice.

Amazingly, if I pay Sunday night for anything on GC, I get it on Wednesday, almost every time. Of course, we are in the same state.

Heritage is usually 5 to 7 days.

With GC pre-pandemic, that was the case with me too.
    And I live in Illinois.

I won a coin on eBay from a forum member and it took six days. currently waiting on Stack's and it's getting close to three weeks with the coin not yet shipped. Heritage can be equally as slow.

    It depends.

Recently I won an item that was sold by Stacks' at a west coast auction. They waited several days to bring the material back to their central shipping place. I paid by credit card, so they sent the item out right away. Overall, it took about two weeks.

If the items don't have to be shipped back to a central location, that reduces it by several days.

Paying by check takes longer because the check as to get the auction house and clear. If the mail is messed up, things take longer. I had one check stuck in the mail for two weeks. I finally stopped payment on it and paid the credit card penalty. Then one day I get a letter from the dealer with my check in it. For whatever reason, it took two weeks to get a letter from Florida to Michigan.

I live on the East coast. 10-14 days from Heritage. Great Collections ships very fast but my last shipment took 14 days.
eBay is a hit or miss. My last item had a shipping label posted on the 5th of April. It just was received on the 11th and now expected delivery is the 16th.

As you probably know outgoing Florida mail is extremely slow, especially from NGC in Sarasota.

I won my first ever auction on Heritage 3 weeks ago. It was 13 days after my payment was made that they shipped it. I emailed them and asked why the delay and they blamed the fear flu and the winter storms(from the beginning of February!! ) as an excuse.

Successful transactions with: Lakesammman, jimineez1, Flackthat, PerryHall, bidask, bccox, TwistedArrow1962, free_spirit, alexerca, scooter25, FHC, tnspro, mcarney1173, moursund, and SurfinxHI (6 times)

It varies of course. One time I bought a coin from Great Collections on Sunday afternoon and it was in my post office box at 12 o'clock on Monday. Less than 19 hours from winning it to receiving it. Can't beat that.
