Let me expound - I have no interest in an artificial rarity.
Does that include sticker rarity?
I have no interest in collecting coins where the grade on their holder is a huge factor in their value anymore, either. So label rarity, sticker rarity...and the sort.
Are you saying that you know longer want the highest graded but now prefer the finest known to your eye?
No, those two are roughly equivalent statements
So what are you saying then, I must have misunderstood?
That I’m collecting true rarities, not condition rarities
Do die varieties count? For example, 1795 "Nine Leaves" Ten Dollar Gold or early cents and dollar die states. Some are rare.
Here in Canada they put it in the French newspaper in Montreal. This will be known worldwide. They will advertise it almost everywhere around the globe. Maybe some trillionaire oil sheik will get it or someone at the top of his nation like say Putin. Who knows maybe the Queen of England. Good luck TDN.

It would not surprise me if the 1933 Double Eagle and the Jenny block don't perform that well in the auction. The real prize is the one cent magenta stamp.
The remaining 1933 Double Eagles hang over the one legal to own coin like dark cloud.
The Jenny block is a block, and an oddly sized one at that, and that area of collecting has declined since the introduction of self stick stamps. There are also plenty of Jenny singles available for trophy hunters.
The one cent magenta is a real stamp and is the only one known. It is the real trophy of the stamp collecting world. There may be a few multi-billionaire international exhibitors out there who would really like to add that to their exhibits. Stamp collecting may have declined but that stamp is still the king!
I agree. There was a thread not that long ago where many knowledgeable members, Laura included, valued it at around $5 million IIRC.

The modern media is too fragmented where it will reach anywhere near the same number or proportion it would have reached in the past. As for the internet, I doubt most non-collectors see many (if any) adds having anything to do with coins.

There is nothing unusual about rare die varieties or other specialization either. A lot of coins are "rare" under this type of narrow definition.

I have to ask TDN I don't know if you collect only coins. But would it not be a wiser move to buy say a Detective Comics #27 1st Batman? Or even a Action Comics #1 1st Superman they are cheap compared to this and are known globally. Amazing Fantasy #15 1st Spiderman is also one of the big comic books. Or even a Babe Ruth rookie say his 1914 Baltimore News only 9 exist or a T206 Honus Wagner with only about 40-50 that exist?
I know an Arab prince owns two CGC 9.0 copies of Action Comics #1. And many other comics as well. I believe Superman is his thing.

Stuart Weitzman has an amazing collection. This is much more exciting than I imagined.
This is an ultimate collection that transcends coin collecting or stamp collecting to the general public, at least for the double eagle and inverted Jenny. As the world's most valuable stamp, the British Guiana is amazing too but I'm not sure how much the general public knows about it.
Definitely a "Less is More" collection in terms of quantity.
Never thought I'd see the coin come up for auction since I started collecting. I'd enjoy a chance to photograph it and add the image to my catalog of different dates and mintmarks.

Had an interesting conversation with my 19-year old daughter over lunch today about this sale. While she is not a collector herself, she immediately knew who Mr. Weitzman was due to his prominence in the fashion world. Within seconds she was googling all sorts of information about the man, the sale, and the items included and reading the NY Times article about it all. From there, we had a lengthy talk about collectibles and collecting in general. Mind you, she's known I collect coins and lots of other things her entire life but this news sparked her interest. I suspect that this won't be a unique situation.
It's hard to know what the ramifications of an auction like this might be. As someone previously mentioned, this event will draw global interest.
If you haven't read the February 26, 2021 Coinweek article linked above by @TDN, do yourself a favor and take the time to. It's a great read.
The Jeeny block was owned by Bill Gross. He traded it for a 1c Z grill (only 1 available which was owned by Mystic stamp company - other one in museum) in order to complete his US collection. In the late 90's and early 2000s Bill Gross was to stamps as Hansen is to coins. In those days I was building a 19th century unused US collection. I eventually gave up as Mr Gross outbid me on all key stamps.

There is way to much history and story on the one 1933 double eagle that can be available to a private citizen (I will leave 'legal', or not out of the equation). Even if a few heavy hitters won't bid on it, the hoopla for this 3 piece auction is going to bring in many others with resources - it is the story after all..... It is far beyond any other US coin in existence. The 1%ers can be silly with their money, the $140 million painting mentioned here is an example. In this coin, there is true value in comparison.
You heard it here first - ≥$30 million for the Farouk 1933 $20 in this auction.

I like the way Sotheby’s is handling this sale. I've said for many years that coins need to be treated as art to attain the next level of value. I think it will go for much more in this format than in a traditional coin format in a coin venue.
I dont know about $30mil but I do believe it will outperform estimates. Just a legendary coin, and one that belongs in an advanced collection. @tradedollarnut I hope you reconsider and are able to add this to your Box of 20

The chances are close to zero that any of these three will sell for anywhere near $70MM. No coin or stamp has ever sold for more than a low fraction of this price. At least with this "art", it's happened many times before.
As another poster wrote somewhere, I'll take "the under" on their combined estimate of $37MM.
