Breathtaking NEWP

I try not to use that term lightly, but I am absolutely enamored with my newest addition.

This coin was on a watch list I had for far too long, and one day a couple of weeks ago when I was cleaning up the list, I decided I needed to inquire before she was gone. This is my third '24, so it's not like I needed her for the primary "Redbook" set, but the pull was getting more and more powerful.

Something about the strike, the surfaces, even the error ... she just exudes a character that is hard to quantify.

And so, I finally reached out to the the seller, who is a standup Member here ( Lenny @paesan ), to inquire what we could do. It was then I found out the coin was on consignment from another long-term and highly respected Member ( Vern @barberkeys ), and they made me an offer simply too good to even question.

Vern's pictures are outstanding, and very accurately capture her ... and so for tonight at least, I will use his.

This is how I described her in my notes tonight after a long, and enjoyable cup of tea.

O-115, R2; Powerful and thick luster highlighted with a light dusting of grey-green over nearly mark-free surfaces and an impressive strike. The reverse has deeper shades of color most noticeable at the lower periphery, and while the obverse planchet lamination is quite noticeable, it does not feel distracting, but seems to add character.

“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

    👍🏼

Interesting mint-made error below the bust. Was that part of the intrigue for you?

I love it. The original Mint luster is outstanding the the eagle appears ready to take flight right off of the reverse. You have been on a Hall of Fame run lately and this coin did not disappoint.

Very nice. Forgive my ignorance, but is that strike doubling on the left side at her nose and along the bustline? The numerous flowlines are also very interesting.

Gorgeous coin. Congrats. It's neat how the strike doubling makes her gown seem to appear to the top of her neckline and seamless integrates with the original gown to extend it. You are correct in that the lamination does not appear to detract from the coins beauty.

    Man, Todd!!
Where do you find these incredible bust halves?!?

Another incredible addition to your set. LOVE the thick luster and clean surfaces on her. Looks to have slight doubling and also what appears to be a small planchet lamination just below the tip of her bust. That just adds to her character. Very nice strike, too, especially on the reverse along with a nice splash of color on the bottom.

    Definitely looks to be AU58!

Certainly one of my favorites that you’ve acquired lately, congrats!!

Looking forward to seeing your pics of the coin.

That is a very nice coin... Great detail and the minor planchet flaw does not distract. Cheers, RickO

I love the way the obverse stars bleed into the rim—highly attractive bust half for sure.

    Very nice! Great choice.

This is a die marriage that often has a blunt strike, suggesting early die wear. Yours is likely a very early strike. Curls, feathers, and talons are all nicely defined.

You know I love the clean fields and even toning. Just wonderful.

I'm not a fan of lamination errors and I think it's a bit of a stretch to perceive it as a positive (unless you collect errors). But I certainly agree that it is not a big distraction and is easy to get past.

Another great coin to add to the Original Todd collection!

I'm not a fan of the planchet flaw but this coin has original written all over it which is hard to come by for this series. Congrats on the new addition.
