2019 AM LIBERTY SILVER MEDAL 2.5 OZ
20633 sold
09/01/2019
Almost all normal online sources of early graded SP70 medals are either sold out now or have slabbing delays that are delaying their shipments. They also have disappeared from eBay other than a couple sellers.
I was told about 30% are getting 70's of what they sent in, but that was based only on one large submitter, and several others were looked at to cull out obvious scratches first before sending in.
The current pop report is way behind as it is not showing the first day of issue and show numbers yet and a lot sitting graded waiting for slabs. 18-70's and 31-69's.
The Liberty gold does have some grading SP70DMPL. They are quite nice looking, but very expensive at this stage.
The silver apparently is considered a matte finish that is caused by hairline whizzing, buffing, whatever mystery the Mint did, but it is a shame they did not just make it a proof
It is a shame given that the silver Liberty reminds me more of the 5 ounce Pucks than the potential beauty and I am just overall disappointed in the appearance.
We will see once I get my SP 70 PCGS.

L&C Coins Sent a mailer email out and they have the PCGS gold in 70 but the silver only in
PCGS 69.
Causes me to wonder if this silver liberty is going to grade at PCGS 70, NGC will of course, and if it does, is it going to be hairline free.
We did have a few PCGS 70 silver liberty, but they sold out before we sent our email. Our silver 70 percentage was 12%.
We only had one gold 70DMPL. We are hoping to have more next week.

Yeah,..curious on how these hairlines are factored into overall grade. Who Knows? 70's may contain hairlines...if they left the mint that way, and part of the production process, are they truly damaged? Time will tell.
Good question and yes they are damaged to me. It isn’t something that I would seek to hold onto. In the event that I receive a PCGS 70 with hairlines it will be returned.
Knowing what I know now about this issue in the minting of this product, I will be happy if I get one clean one and stop there.
I view it the same as if I buy a product from Amazon and it is damaged or inferior then it is going to be returned.
Just received one of my PCGS SP70 matte silver Liberty medals. For any waiting and wondering, it is a nice looking medal if you just look at it from about a foot away.
But with my 4x magnifying lens it looks like they took a fine wire brush to it including the rims in several areas.

I would love to hear our host opinion about these hairlines and if true they are getting SP70 grades, I always believed that a coin/medal had to be free of marks, it use to be really special to get back a 70 grade on anything, now it's very common. I have wondered if the coins from the mint are really that much better or if our standards are demanding 70's or else.
I noticed someone commented earlier in this thread that if PCGS didn't give it a 70 that NGC would, I didn't agree with that. As far as it goes it seems they are right on par with the same percentage of moderns getting 70's as here. I'm not going to be able to say that about other services.
I will say that PCGS's reputation is better yet I don't see the huge margins we were seeing just a dozen years ago.

I say this is one of the few instances of the Mint photo looking better than the actual in-hand coin, for me, In the silver.
I am excited to see the gold liberty, at some point, in a PCGS holder.
I understand it has a more impressive appearance and I see it is being graded at deep mirror proof-like, by PCGS.
Added: Very interesting, cannot find the silver liberty in PCGS 70 anywhere, now.
No eBay, no Google search success.
I see ONE NGC 70 On eBay that is described as “Perfect NGC Specimen 70 !” With some interesting looking whizzing or rub lines that compete with the lines on the coin design.
More ouch.
This is a close-up of my Liberty SP70. Sorry about the poor photo, I could not get it as sharp as I wanted to but you can see the general idea. It seems like the lines could be raised die polish as struck. I don't know much about the rims.
Bottom line this seems to be the "matte finish" and as a result the 70 grade?
Received a second SP70 silver, like the other it looks good to me in hand, but with a glass there are the "matte" finish lines at a certain angle in the right light.
I also notice none seem to be available on eBay at the moment and not seeing them for sale anywhere? Fairly unusual, any ideas why?
I received my PCGS SP 70 Silver liberty this evening.
First of all, I love the black label. I don’t think anybody does it better than PCGS in their labeling of modern coins. It’s a great frame for this large medal. I appreciate a strong and sophisticated presentation for a medal that I want to keep.
I am surprised! Pleasantly...It is a clean 70!
I did not anticipate that. It definitely has a matte finish but as far as I can see it is clean of the hair lines. I do not see any rub marks. Or the obvious whizzing.
Nice cartwheeling when rotated.
In all other photos I viewed it was not necessary to have magnification to see the damaged finish. The Eagle really pops. Especially the predator eye. The high relief is much more obvious on the reverse.
And lastly, having a clean field really helps the high relief.
Whew.

Thank you for posting your picture, goldminer. I don’t have the photography skills or the desire to post pictures of my 70. Suffice to say, I am happy.
I ordered one but it’s at least 10 days out doing the Pre Order wait. I want to experiment on Slab Photography one item I have not really tried. Plus it going to be a 69 grade so it will be fun to compare against a 70 on these versions of coins. Miles inspired me to pull the trigger!
I am going to go out on a limb and say every 70 graded silver medal has the lines on it, you just may not see them. The one posted clearly has them. It is just how they were made, unfortunately.

The lines on my medal's obverse aren't really visible unless you rotate it under certain light conditions. They do show up under magnification.
The reverse looks fine, which is why I bought the thing in the first place.
Unlike so many other issues from the Mint, there is a significant low number of silver Liberty 70s available either eBay or elsewhere.
I see one PCGS 70 on eBay for $389.
Is this an indication of the scarcity of 70s or the scarcity of graded liberties?
I believe it is scarcity of graded ones partly due to the limitations of the oversize holder machine which has supposedly been delaying some graded shipments at NGC and PCGS.
However, if you have to buy several medals to get a 70, it makes sense they are expensive. There are dozens of SP69's for sale.
The gold is an "enhanced" finish vs a "matte" finish for the silver. I believe the matte finish is an experiment to test some new finish method, that probably should not ever be repeated.
The enhanced finish on the gold is excellent from what I see with several SP70PL and SP70DMPL coins.
Zero. Zero SP 70’s that I can find on eBay. One NGC and one PCGS got sold.
Anyone have the current numbers for the various grades assigned to the silver Liberty from PCGS?

As of this post, all varieties total:
SP69: 207
SP70: 251
Total: 458
Base coin # 788425 (from here you can find all the varieties, such as FS, coin # 796767, which has SP69=182 and SP70=101)
I think it is important to remember for medals submissions (not coins) it can take 25-35 business days to get them graded. Also the oversize slabs are a factor. There are probably 1,000+ medals already in process, or grading, or encapsulation from both regular and bulk submitters. I expect many more graded medals will be available in 2-3 weeks.
In the meantime, prices could be headed up for a while as it seems they are hard to get in 70 quality with the unusual finish issues. I see hundreds sold on eBay by dealers ungraded in OGP that were l looked at and not sent in for grading, plus probably 100's more returned from grading soon for not meeting a minimum grade to slab 69 or 70 depending on bulk submitters requests.
Would also be interesting to know how many were returned to the Mint, even with their new "don't return too many" or else policy.
This should have been a high relief proof, not this variable, so-called, matte finish. I can imagine that reverse eagle frosty, with a mirror proof background.
This thread sure slowed down after the apparent silver matte finish issues and current availability of the graded SP70 silver medals other than pre-sales.
I am very happy however, as our hosts just graded my 2019-W $100 gold Liberty a SP70DMPL.
It will be a while before the silver grade comes back as the medals with oversize holders are more complicated.

Yes I understand as I was worried about that with my PCGS 70 black label. Fortunately, I think I was one of the first ones to place an order at under $200 and got mine and it is stunning. Sorry to hear you didn’t get yours.
This is my PCGS TrueView SP70DMPL, in a normal Gold Shield Flag FS label which I usually get to save some $$, but agree the other black labels look better with gold. I can't get those if I submit one coin. I find that some TV pictures look more mirror finish than others depending on coin angle and lighting, but it does have a nice finish in hand.

Maybe someone can help me out here. 25000 silver liberty sold. Tiny amount of graded versions available on eBay or elsewhere. Why?
Tepid demand and everyone knew it. Most slabs come from bulk dealers. They all stayed away.
Hmm..good point.
I see one PCGS 70 from L&C coins for $500 and another for $550.
Tepid demand certainly and minimal 70s available.
Even less available now, both 70s are gone.
On a more positive note, there are plenty of graded gold liberties available.
