    The half cent and large cent overstrikes are also sold out.

    Lowest mintage of those seems to be the “1858” Braided Hair Half Cent (46 high grade, 6 antiqued). Glad I grabbed both types of each.

    I received my 2009 proof over strike today. Nowhere near US mint quality. It appears to have hairlines all around the diameter of the coin next to the rim. And what appears to be a obvious mark on the obverse's field. I hoped for more at that price point.

    TeamDennis while I cannot speak for Mr. Carr. He monitors this board . He is a very accommodating person and I continued to keep coming back due to his good service. Not to mention his good quality of work. Rest a sure, I am sure he will contact you.

    Also I have gotten coins from the Mint that when graded were not considered 70's but ended up 69's. One even a 68.
    So with that I cannot say the Mint is all that top notched. Might be why I have not really been buying to much from the mint.

    Sorry that it didn't meet your expectations. You can certainly return it for a full refund.
    I suspect that the "hairlines" you see are actually radial flow lines or faint wire brush marks. The host coins are wire-brushed PRIOR to the over-striking to remove all traces of the dreaded "milk spotting". A faint pattern of these can sometimes be seen in the fields after the over-striking. And with 250 or more tons of over-striking force, enough to completely change the reverse design, there is a lot of stress near the rim which causes radial metal flow lines to be scoured into the die face. In a run of 100 pieces I re-polished the dies three times.

    Striking over virgin blanks would be a lot easier and more perfect. But that is not the nature of this product.

    I did mail it back today for a replacement. I can live with the "radial flow lines" if it is consistent in all of them. The light scratch just above the Y in liberty suggests a bulk handling mark although I doubt these were bulk handled. You should receive it Monday. Thanks for taking the time to explain and making it right.

    What you are probably seeing on the coin is an area of flow stress on the die, not a scratch. A coin over-struck after a different round of die polishing will not have that same stress mark (but could have minor stress marks in another area).

    aspie_rocco I like that little ghost! Thanks for the close up I have not thought about looking for them. That will give me something to do this weekend. I like how the coin feels when I grab it on its edge. Very interesting, cant describe it in words but its different from all the other coins. Its almost delicate/fragile to the touch. Seems like it would break even though I know it would not.

    Lower mintages are nice but those have actually gone up in price healthily as well.

    Okay here is the only one of the 1858 Antiqued Braided Hair, I got in this year, in 2 x 2 snaps. The scratch is in the plastic, I guess they went fast.
    Time for some DC coins any more good finds out there?

    Go to the ANACS home page.
    Go to the ANACS Certification and Photo Search and click on it. (right hand side)
    Enter the certification # and it will tell you the coin and grade.
    On the last step you might see circulated #s. Just click on the MS tab and you're good to go.
    And 5 of 12 ain't bad.... B)

    Can't wait to see which ones got the 70.
