58 or 62. So hard to tell from a pic.
Nice pick up!

I'm in the MS62 camp. Gold is great no matter the grade.
Congrats on your first gold piece purchase.

That was my exact thought on grade when I looked at the photo.
I Just can't tel if it is the lighting or if the luster is rubbed in the field.
62 camp here. Great pics btw

Hmmm...I'm going to go with 58. A nice coin regardless of the grade!
In that holder I'd guess 58 - 62. That is the toughest post 1900 liberty $5, nice first gold coin. I like it a lot.

you should send it to PCGS.
Very nice! If it is AU, I'd call it AU-58+. But I would consider it MS-62 based on these images. I just don't really see any rub on the high points in the provided images.
I like it as an AU-58.

She is very nice. Great buy.

Oh boy........but all opinions are welcomed.......but oh boy
I can’t honestly see any rub from those images. So, I’m going to say 62 but depending on the luster, that I can’t judge, it could even go 63.

A VERY nice first gold coin my coin brother
62 probably but 63 wouldn’t surprise
My guess is that it would grade a 62, it's a nice example. Congratulations on your first gold. May you continue to collect more !!!
61 and I like it
The luster sure does shows
Nice score!!

MS62 or possibly 63 on a good day. Looks like it's in an older NGC slab.
I would say 62 since there appears to be no rub and some luster....the dings hold it down...Cheers, RickO

I like to think it's MS63 but I am in the AU-58 camp, also. Either way , congrats on your first piece. Gold coins have a special place in numismatics. They became way more collectible after 1933. And they never lose their luster ( in a sense) .... 'cause they're gold. Nice one.

I forgot to mention.
That is an excellent image.

AU55 to 58
ms62. congrats
Interesting, only one member here has gotten it partially right, meaning the current grade is within his range, looking for someone to guess it exactly without giving a range. Will post the pic of the holder end of day,
thank you for your guesses.
55
AU58. Very nice looking coin no matter the assigned grade.

That’s a pretty coin. MS 60 is my guess.
MS62
what the heck, I'll guess MS63.
I'd grade it 58 on loss of luster and abrasions in the fields.
It's probably in a 62 holder though.

Smudge won albeit he used my hint and figured it out thru process of elimination, smarty pants;)
Thanks for playing and all the well thought out opinions.
If you ever decide to sell it I'd send it to CAC, (do they give opinions on ANA slabs?), or PCGS first. I think it is undergraded by today's standards. I really like it.

55 is a tough grade on that coin. Like the holder.
CAC only reviews PCGS and NGC coins.
The crossover/re-grading game gets expensive especially for a coin that only retails for $600 or so...
Nicer than a 55.
Would be in a "MS" holder if submitted today.
I think this is far from a lock...I'd guess that the original grader saw a little rub hence the 55...maybe if you cross you can get a 58...but there is really no price difference between a 55 and a 58...and you'll spend a significant sum relative to the value of the coin on grading fees, shipping etc....
Price Guide for a 1904-S AU55 is $570 and $610 in AU58...and goes up to $1100 in MS61, $1650 in MS62 and $2850 in MS63...
If someone down the sales chain (the seller, the retail dealer etc.) thought this had a chance to get into an MS holder it probably would have already been tried....my experience is that dealers like to leave a little skin on the bone...but they are not going to leave that much meat...
Nice coin!!!
The likelihood of the coin crossing from a 55 to 60+ is pretty slim in a single submission and questionable with multiple. Perhaps it might cross to a 58 and then once in a 58 holder it might further upgrade if submitted as a regrade. Lots of money to spend with grading fees and shipping with marginal upside potential. I’d leave it alone, the old ANACS holder adds value and everyone thinks it’s undergraded.
I agree with your comments for the most part but I have seen far weaker coins in 61/2/even 3 holders.
Not necessarily this date though.
I still think it's harshly graded at 55.
