    That was my exact thought on grade when I looked at the photo.
    I Just can't tel if it is the lighting or if the luster is rubbed in the field.

    In that holder I'd guess 58 - 62. That is the toughest post 1900 liberty $5, nice first gold coin. I like it a lot.

    Very nice! If it is AU, I'd call it AU-58+. But I would consider it MS-62 based on these images. I just don't really see any rub on the high points in the provided images.

    I can’t honestly see any rub from those images. So, I’m going to say 62 but depending on the luster, that I can’t judge, it could even go 63.

    I like to think it's MS63 but I am in the AU-58 camp, also. Either way , congrats on your first piece. Gold coins have a special place in numismatics. They became way more collectible after 1933. And they never lose their luster ( in a sense) .... 'cause they're gold. Nice one.

    I'd grade it 58 on loss of luster and abrasions in the fields.

    It's probably in a 62 holder though.

    If you ever decide to sell it I'd send it to CAC, (do they give opinions on ANA slabs?), or PCGS first. I think it is undergraded by today's standards. I really like it.

    CAC only reviews PCGS and NGC coins.

    The crossover/re-grading game gets expensive especially for a coin that only retails for $600 or so...

    I think this is far from a lock...I'd guess that the original grader saw a little rub hence the 55...maybe if you cross you can get a 58...but there is really no price difference between a 55 and a 58...and you'll spend a significant sum relative to the value of the coin on grading fees, shipping etc....

    Price Guide for a 1904-S AU55 is $570 and $610 in AU58...and goes up to $1100 in MS61, $1650 in MS62 and $2850 in MS63...

    If someone down the sales chain (the seller, the retail dealer etc.) thought this had a chance to get into an MS holder it probably would have already been tried....my experience is that dealers like to leave a little skin on the bone...but they are not going to leave that much meat...

    I agree with your comments for the most part but I have seen far weaker coins in 61/2/even 3 holders.
    Not necessarily this date though.
    I still think it's harshly graded at 55.
