Black Cat

The Legend Collection Trade Dallar is back under a new owner and name Black Cat. It is nice to see these coins will remain in the registery. To breakaway from the tie with TDN, there are only two coins that are upgradable.

I saw this in today's Legend market report. Would love to know more about this collection (beyond the trade dollars) and this collector

The two coins currently available are crap. But don’t worry - gradeflation will break the tie soon enough

How long of a period of gradefaction has it been. Should there not be a period of gradedefalaton at some point?

BC s a coin purist. In the end he knows what me and Bruce did and feels no need to change anything. There will never be any TD set even remotely close! In fact, TDN will tell you, the coins in his old set are so powerful they could be raw and still trade for huge money as they are NOT inflated by grades. Definately 1/2 the set min would plus today.

I can say this, he isn't the next Eliasberg, but watch this kitty develop-I know what he owns, he already does rank among the greatest collectors ever. And he is only getting started!

Wow... strong words from a very knowledgeable individual (@specialist)....Makes me wonder what else this Black Cat has.... Cheers, RickO

BC will post a few sets on the registry soon-but just a few. All I can tell you is one thing he is building a DOUBLE Type set (front and back) and he LOVES Pre 1800 coins. Last year, his first year buying-with out any fan fair, he spent well in excess of $10,000,000.00. Give him 2-3 years to finish a few things. And OMG he is circling Simpson for his patterns (which isn't happening). It is true he hisses about not being able to buy Simpsons Amzonian sets (all metals).

Even better the kitty does not have sharp claws. He has no ego, just a passion for coins that's nearly as strong as crazy TDN's is. In the beginning we had no clue just what his collecting goals would be. He loves coins UNDERR $5,000.00 as much as $1 million plus pieces he owns. I'd guess his favorite coin is the $1 1794 PCGS MS64 CAC he bought last year.

I would today with what he has, challenge his collection vs ANY collection out there (save for anything Legend built) for quality-ANY collection! he is 100% PCGS CAC and demands great eye appeal!

If you go to ANA Show, stop at the ANA Museum show cases and check out his ORIGINAL Confederate Half and Cent (both ex Newman).

    MeOW!

Well, I was going to guess he was connected to the Carolina Panthers but 10 Mil? I better guess again.

Hey not everyone is into banging the drum...The only reason he is appearing is he does want to share his coins and display them. His coins deserve to be seen. For me, I'm tired of others banging the drum with lesser quality.

Many people do not know who Tyrannt is (I do and deal w/him)-and he IS one of the greatest collectors ever! He made ZERO noise while building his sets.

  • Thank you for the valuable insight... wishing Black Cat all the best in his collecting journey...

This cat has a new set of complete patterns. It hits the board in second place and 5% completion. Check it out.

    https://www.pcgs.com/SetRegistry/u-s-patterns/complete-sets/complete-patterns-die-trials-experimental-pieces/1124

It appear some of these high grade patterns are from the Simpson Patterns. I believe there is a common denominator between these two collections. The Simpson Pattern set peaked in mid 2015, and there have been a slow sell off. It is interesting that as Simpson desire has lessen, there a new player that may be taking his place.

First, Mr Simpson is still buying patterns. I recently sold him a unique piece. He never liked standards or some minor design pieces. He occasionally "fires" them.

Black Cat is my customer, so of course when I get neat patterns either from Simpson or ones he does not need (which I get quite often), I sell them to him. The kitty already has over 200 wicked cool pieces.

While old Delloy is out there getting all his fame, this cat is moving silently buying up coins that would make a litter box go clean (like TDN's TD set or his Confederate Half that will be on display at ANA).

Sadly, a fur ball will stop BC from being the next Simpson because kitty is unhappy he can not get the Amazonian Gold set from him! BUT he sure will get almost everything else!
    MEOW!

There was a sell of one of four known original halfs by Heritage Nov. 2017 and it is the Newcomer specimen. Maybe this is the half that Top Cat plans to display.

At least fifty years that I know of. You can see it for yourself just looking at grading guides or reading descriptions of grades from the 1960's. Heck, that's just one of the reasons all the in-between-grades evolved.

Between gradeflation and ascending needs for "approval" it's a wonder that anyone wants a coin.

So, that is not that case?

  • specialistspecialist Posts: 956 ✭✭✭✭✭

Yes, we did buy the Newman Confederate Half and Cent. They will be on display at ANA. He also bought the 1794 $1 PCGS MS64 CAC last year for $2.8 million....He owns a few million dollar pieces. he just does not seek attention when he buys. he's partially coming out because the world should know there is more then one big cat around these days. In his other passion, he owns an extremely rare full alligator fossil that is the finest for the species (won't even go there on cost). When this kitty collects, he wants the best! He is only getting started! I stand by this comment, if he stopped today he would easily rank as having one of the greatest coin collections ever (NOT all his coins are posted).

Heck, NO on cats for me. I have 3 big yappy birdies...

His Confederate coins will be on display at the big ANA display.

  • I had a Maine Coon growing up. He was huge. When stretched out he was so long he would open doors with the straight handles. He went anywhere he wanted in the house, just opened the doors.

@ManifestDestiny....Maine Coon's are great cats... but they sure do shed...they are a large cat, and that long hair makes them seem even larger...Cheers, RickO

  • We lived in Florida so we would actually shave him so he wouldn’t get so hot. We would give him a male lion haircut. Full main, hair on the feet, and ball on the tail. Literally a lion haircut. He loved it because when you would pet him he could actually feel it on his skin. It was an awesome haircut for him and neighbors would come over and literally startle when he would come running out because he looked like a miniature lion.

@ManifestDestiny...Yes, ours has a lion cut right now... due to the early heat here, she started to mat and no amount of brushing was working... so... second time... lion cut... and yes, it does look cool. Cheers, RickO

This is suppose to be a Hansen Thread ?
What are some of the most valuable coins in his collection ?
How many million dollar coins does he own ?
What are some of his favorite coins ?

No. This cat is staying in the dark. You can hear him, but you can’t see him. He posted his confederate set, but Mama Cat made him take it down.

    stewart,

BC is 100% working with me. Just because he does not bang the drum publically like old Delloy does not mean he is a light weight. All I can say is last year, his purchases were fully in the Delloy league.

His two most expensive items, TDN's TD set and the $1 1794 PCGS MS64 CAC. He absolutely is Bob Simpson jr on patterns-and he already has 200 WILD pieces. He wanted to come out much earlier then I wanted him (I am making him pull back). His Newman Confederate Half will be on display at the ANA Show at the ANA displays.

If he stopped today-and he has ONLY been collecting for 1 1/2 years, I rank his collection among the greatest. And this is coming from ME. Be nice Stewart, he might buy some of your best copper....

This cat is only getting started. Last week he bought the MONSTER 50C 1906S PCGS MS68 CAC (formerly NGC MS69) for a Type coin.

He is ALL PCGS , ALL CAC ONLY too. He totally "gets it" about what to buy.

Like Simpson, in the future, we will have his treasures displayed at major shows.

There should be more thought into only buying pcgs and cac. If the right coin comes along that is not pcgs nor cac then you as a professional, I'm sure would say buy it and resubmit it.
Anybody can submit a raw coin to pcgs and cac and make a few bucks if they don't limit themselves and learn their niche.
