In Italy they used a little Salt Dish at the table not Salt Shakers like us. You get a little pinch of salt and put it on your food. That's what I want, an Italian Style Salt Dish so I can get a pinch of Salt for my Meals. A Pinch of California Gold Dust? Knock yourself out.

I got off the phone with them around an hour ago. I’m very unimpressed. Spoke to a clueless operator who knew nothing about the sale. She transferred me to a broker who transferred me to another broker. The broker wasn’t knowledgeable about coins and he was very pushy and annoying. He wouldn’t answer any specific questions about upcoming releases, CAC, denominations, stock photos, etc. He did tell me that 1856-S $20 were now available in PCGS 58-63. Too bad these coins are being sold by a boilerplate operation.

Surprisingly overpriced. Remember that PCGS just graded the 2nd batch of coins.

I’m waiting for the monster toned 1857-S $20 and the PL quarter eagle

Before about the 1930's, in the US, salt was in salt cellars at each place setting at the table with a larger master salt cellar to fill the individual cellars. They all had tiny spoons to use to sprinkle the salt. I remember my mother telling us that, when she was little, her job was to fill the cellars before the company arrived. My sister collects salt cellars today.

More likely they just have the calls go right to the Mint's call center.

Does anyone know if this will be the only seller handling the S.S. Central America coins?

I believe Universal is mass marketing the common dates and US Coins will individually be selling the rarities...

the smartest people in the biz are marketing this deal (Manley and US coins). To move the biggest amounts to the masses they enlisted their telemarketers. from what i know the demand is really strong.

I personally am not a fan of the holder.

The prices are just fine. I did just buy TWO $20 MS67's (from the original group). the prices have more then held up

Hey thanks a million ( grazie mille ) for that bit of information on Salt Cellars. I've been reading up online and soon ended up on the Amazon site with White Carerra Marble Salt Dishes. And here I thought I'd need to go to Italy to get something like that.

I'd never heard of a Salt Cellar before, thanks for the little lesson in earlier American life.

Considering a pinch, and they seem to be moving.

There were 65 available when I checked this morning. Then around lunch it showed 177 available. Since then it's been going down through the afternoon.... 171, 165, and now at 5:00 EST it's showing 150 available.

    Many of you buying pinches?

    1TwoBits

My only fear with the pinches is that you are getting much less dust than it appears in the artwork. It might end up looking like a dirty, but shiny, plastic window.

Even before price, I just don't like the conserved look of these coins. Unnatural.

Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

If they don't sell like hotcakes I'm sure those who invested in the recovery will start to get a bit angry very quickly.

And then apropos of absolutely nothing, they include the NRA Business Alliance with these memberships and accolades.
I'm a firearm owner and a very proud supporter of the 2nd amendment. But I would never buy a coin, let alone a 5-figure coin, from an organization who supports the NRA.

I know for a fact that this appeals to many members here. It may be just enough to make some of my fellow posters buy a coin from this outfit. No sir. Not me. Not ever.

I don't mean to hijack this thread. This seller has included their sponsorship on their home page, so I feel it's relevant.

I would never buy a coin from any outfit that publicly supports the organization that promotes the sale and ownership of weapons of mass destruction. Shame on you PCGS for promoting the business of such scum. Pretty pathetic what some will promote in an attempt to make a buck. Absolutely sickening.

I called Mike Fuljenz of Universal Coin & Bullion, who has written several books about Double Eagles. Mike has seen the postings on the PCGS Message Board and has talked about your concerns and addressed issues with his staff. He wants positive experiences for customers and welcomes direct communications with any interested collectors or dealers regarding requests for information, concerns or to make purchases. You can reach him by email on Monday at Vickie@UniversalCoin.com.

I looked it over, the gold pinch was interesting but the coins were crazy priced and only had stock images. It looked and felt like a boiler room operation. Kagin's did so much better with the Saddle Ridge hoard, some prices were to the moon but others were better, plus it was/is a reputable firm. Universal just comes across as a slightly higher grade Pawn Stars.

I loved the exhibit, the history and Bob Evans' talk on this discovery. If this is how the treasure will get dispersed, I see lots of inventory hanging around, not getting sold.

Got an email from pcgs about these today. What's everyone's thoughts? The coins are higher than I want to pay, so I picked up a couple of the pinches of gold in the holders. I figured it was a fairly cheap way to be a part of the excitement.

so what is the price over spot for a pinch. And what is the weight of the pinch? If I pinch the gold will I see less if the pincher has small hands?

    I'm guessing 1+ gram... Hope it's more tho. :)

I guess the NGC, MS-65 graded 1857-S double eagle in my collection will soon be worth a fraction of what I paid. Oh well I should have listened to those who projected what would happen to market for these coins.

It's less than a gram. Supposedly 40 pinches to an ounce.

I'd prefer the pre-sea salvage coins, not sure what the frenzy is about. I thought that this hoard hit the market years ago, is this a new group?

Yes, new group, and until the_SS Central America_ coins hit the market over 20 years ago obtaining a high grade (MS-64 or better) Type I $20 gold was very difficult. The shipwreck coins were a boon to type collectors.

Didn't realize there is more of this choice/gem shipwreck gold out there to bring up...esp. the 1857-s twenties. Increasing supplies and dwindling collector/investor base isn't a good formula.

Better values than shipwreck gold in the market today include US Mint 1 oz proof gold eagles in mint packaging for 2-3% over spot. Not much downside. And essentially no quantities from ship wrecks or overseas will show up. The mint is making very few these days....the supply of them mostly comes from the existing issues 1986-2017....about a 1.7% increase in supply per year....on par with how much gold is mined each year to add to above ground supplies (1.7-1.8%). And even at a 1.7 MILL total mintage....it's far less than BU eagles, Saints, $20 Libs, etc. And proof eagles w/packaging can go into IRA's....not so for pre-1933 US gold. And many of these have had their wrappers tossed in the quest for a PF70 grade....reducing the #'s qualifying for IRA's.

Received my pinch of gold yesterday, and I couldn't be more happy. Not only do I own a piece of history, the slab is gorgeous. The fact that they are partnered with the NRA makes it more of a pleasure to purchase from them.

$199.99 per pinch plus shipping when you can still get them for $135/$140? Quite an ebay mark-up.

I sold two at that price already. With only pcgs promoting these so far, they are easier to find on ebay. Easier to find means more people looking, and with only a couple on ebay so far, they bring higher prices.
