    Not an 8R, but a tougher 4R denomination. PCGS has certified just 10 cap & rays 4R's in MS, w/ 3 @ 62, 6 @ 63 and 1 @ 64. This is one of the 63 coins. It is also an overdate (1868/58) and overassayer (YF/PF). An ex-CRO coin.

    OK, some special Cap and Ray Hooknecks:


    Hubbard and O'Harrow variety MO9/MR9B.


    Hubbard and O'Harrow variety N3 S6.


    Hubbard and O'Harrow variety F1 L11.


    Hubbard and O'Harrow variety MO12/MR12.

    And now the special ones:


    Very scarce Hookneck specimen from the Guanajuato Mint. According to Hubbard and O'Harrow, finding Guanajuato Hoooknecks with full Libertad is extremely difficult. Of the three mints that produced Hooknecks (Mexico City, Durango, and Guanajuato), Guanajuato is the least common. At the time of purchase, a search to Heritage website yielded only 3 coins for Guanajuato 1824, and this one was the only one not with a Details grade. Also, at the time of purchase, the NGC census listed 17 coins graded plus 6 with a details grade. Of those with numeric grade there are 5 at 45, 1 at 50, 3 at 55, and 1 at 62. However, as the NGC census follows the KM system instead of the Hubbard and O'Harrow system, it is difficult to know how many coins of the same type are listed. Hubbard and O'Harrow variety GO11 and GR11.

    ANd last but not least:


    Of all Hookneck coinage, Guanajuato 1825 is the most elusive. This coin is a nice example of the coinage representative of the type. At the time of purchase (January 2017) NGC has 4 coins in their census 1@F, 2@VF, 1@40), however, due to the multiple varieties known, it is difficult to know if even 2 of these coins are the same type or different one. Hubbard and O'Harrow variety GO10 and GR10.

    At the time of purchase Heritage had sold only 2 Hookneck 8 reales from Guanajuato 1825, this one, and an PCGS certified as XF details tooled. Apparently both are form the same variety, and none with a readable “Libertad” on the cap.

    While clearly these are not in as great shape as all those published before, these saw over 7 decades of circulation, so I think they are in great shape all things considered...

    @Abuelo good catch! Judging by all the beauties you posted, you’re a Hookneck specialist.

    For those who don’t know, this is the first major error of the Mexican Republic. The die sinker misspelled REPUBLICA as REPULICA. 6 or 7 known.

    These are some amazing photos; they reinforce my views about the beauty of the Cap and Rays design. The 1896 Zacatecas coin may be the most beautiful of that type I have ever seen! (I looked at the certificate number; it's one of a very small number of MS 66 copies.)

    So, I am hoping to extend this thread in the hopes that others will post even more gorgeous photos. I will contribute a couple. This first is a 1839 Zacatecas MS 62 purchased from Karl Stephens. Not a high mint state grade, but the oldest of my Cap and Rays 8 R. and (somewhat to my surprise, a PopTop):

    The second is a 1878 Mexico City MS 64 with some pretty toning:

    As some of you know, there are only 3 coins at the top of the grading scale, at MS 66+. Two have photos available on the PCGS website (1895 Cn AM and 1891 Zs FZ). But there's no photo of the 1834 Go PJ, which (considering the date) is in incredible condition. If anybody here has that coin, it would be great if they could post a photo.

    And, more generally, please post some more pix.

    Wow. All are amazing, but that first one with the edge and dentils segments - just Wow!

    Also @pruebas even if it got a details grade it was most likely still imaged. Try looking up the certificate number.
