What does the number of stars after your username signify?

Some people have 3, some have 4, some have 5. It doesn't seem to be purely based on number of posts.
I dont recall ever seeing any 1 or 2 star insignias, nor do I recall ever seeing 6 stars.
So it must be a 3 tiered system: 3 or 4 or 5 stars only .
So meaning? Just curious.

A long numismatic life coupled with collecting joy and happiness. As in most things, the more, the merrier.

Maybe 4 stars are like the Jan Brady's of the board -- the forgotten middle child.

Are they based on points acquired? Or Likes and Agrees you have?
Not sure myself, but post count and time as a member don't seem to be a factor.

When I first joined CU, I erroneously thought it actually was an indication of the member's numismatic knowledge but it has no specific relationship to that. I even suggested that some members (when I learned their ID) who deserved 5 stars should be given them as soon as they joined. For example, If an "Eric Newman" were to join today and the Mods knew of his stature and ID he should get the 5-star rating immediately or very soon after it became obvious he was going to be a "regular" here and share his knowledge. I assure you there are folks here with 3 stars that could take me to the schoolhouse!
These are observable facts. Some posters who are numismatic amateurs have received 4 to 5 stars in less than a year of posting. Others have reached that goal aided by the number of years they have been a member. Most have done it based on "points" earned. Therefore, stars provide no absolute clue to numismatic expertise.
If you want the stars, post a lot, be entertaining and friendly, add something to the forums, and stay awhile. The folks who monitor this forum hand them out at their discretion - as it should be. It is their forum.
I think the number of stars is a combination of posts, agrees and likes.
The title is assigned when you set the board up. Right now, you have:
3 stars: Collector
4 stars: Expert Collector
5 stars: Master Collector.
So if this was a fishing board, for instance,
3 stars: Baiter
4 stars: Expert Baiter
5 stars: Master... well, you know.
(See, this post proves the number of stars you have has nothing to do with numismatics. And yes, it's a slow day here. Just got finished shoveling the $@%&$ snow...)
There are 1 and 2 stars but you progress past those pretty quickly.
Far as I can tell it is based points which I'm pretty sure are based on likes, agrees and badges. I do not think LOLs contribute, disagrees may actually decrease point count. As stated above, no relation to numismatic knowledge. It is based on your activity on the board.
it's crackers to slip a rozzer the dropsy in snide
5 stars = I'm older than dirt.
... and more "likable"

Hey, Backroadjunkie, the first time I heard that joke I was about seven years old. I told it to my mom. Can't remember if she laughed or not. Ever hear the one about "rubber balls and liquor?" It's almost as funny as yours. Not quite, But almost.
I'm happy to get 3 stars. That in total, is more stars than I ever got from any teachers from kindergarten to graduating college. Actually if I'm remembering right, 1 star would have been more.
As you advance through this board you get points for things you do, including posts, agrees, likes, etc.
Click on your Avatar and you can see your "badges" earned. The more badges, post, comments, etc. you make, the more points you get. The stars are given out after reaching certain levels.
The longer your here, the more you comment, agree or like (and the more people that click on You that like a comment you made, ) the faster you move up and earn stars and points.
Hope this helps.
Pete

I like coins and cards.
It's based on the number of points you have.
1000+ = 5 stars
500+ = 4 stars
100+ = 3 stars
50+ = 2 stars (that's a guess, not sure where the actual cutoff is)
Below 50 = 1 star

While you guys have posted "basic" well-known information (see similar discussions); perhaps that is the way it should be BUT THAT IS NOT THE ENTIRE WAY IT DOES WORK.
Trust me, I'm the curious type and as soon as I joined I tried to solve all the ways this forum works. What I posted above are observable FACTS. Anyone who is curious and takes the time to compare the profiles of members can verify what I posted above.
EDIT: Besides the computer program, the folks who monitor this forum have the ability to hand stars out at their discretion - as it should be. It is their forum.
i dont think popeye would like that.
My waitress at Cracker Barrel had 4 stars so I guess she's a General in the food service industry. I posted here just to see how many stars I have.

People with 5 stars get unlimited free submissions.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
I only have 2 stars- so I guess I am prepubescent.
Facinating stuff. Thanks for explaining. I was curious how many points BillJones had — holy cow, over 5000 points! I wonder who on here has the most points. Whoever has the most points should get some free stock or something.

I wondered how this worked. I do a lot of reading on here and don't post a whole lot. I do hand out "likes" and "agrees". I've only started a few threads and I have posted just over 1200 times, yet somehow I have 4 stars. It makes very little sense when there are others in here who seem to contribute more than I do yet have fewer stars. It's a mystery...
It is another worthless post embellishment that came with the new software. I think poster 10000lakes is correct.
I wish that were true.
Posting just to see how many stars I have.
Edit: Hey, five. Nice. Can I use this on my resume?
5 stars means you have a bad case of OCD.
Only 3, just a kid
No....they get unlimited paid submissions at a 10% advance...
Provided the send in through a dealer.
You mean you don't have to salute?

WingedLiberty1957 you're a FOUR STAR General.
I have never tried to figure out the system.... Things just appear... stars, badges etc....I tend to focus on coins and coin discussions.... with the occasional bit of humor and philosophy mixed in...
Cheers, RickO
4 stars means that I need a life.

@10000lakes, I think you are right. I just went over 1000 Points today and went from four stars to five, and received an email note from Collectors Universe / PCGS saying, "Congratulations! You've been promoted to Master Collector."

I must be that red headed step child everyone talks about
I recall the good old days when post count was the important factor.
Back then with 17,000 posts I was a somebody, now I'm a nobody.
I thought I would post so we have representation for all stars. By the way I have less than 50 points and one star.
Wow. I should think quality was a factor. I sure hope I don't get to 17,000. Wait, It may indicate I've had a long life.
I have no idea how their system works. I've been a member since Jan 2007 and I got my "1st answer" badge last month. Lol I could have sworn I had another answer sometime last year.

1 star means that you're a member.
2 stars is a veteran.
3 stars make you a collector
4 stars you're an expert collector
5 stars gets you to master collector status.
Just hover over the stars mit your cursor.

I was at the Cracker Barrel a few weeks ago and I thought about this place when I seen her 4 stars. I felt like asking her if she posted on the forum.
Later, Paul.
You have to look at your points. 1000 will get you a 5 Star General ranking.
Really means nothing...........but it's still fun.

They sure won’t get me a cup of coffee around here.

The badges link above shows the points for each badge.
Plus you get 1 point for each "Like" other members apply to your posts.
You get 0 points for making a post, and 0 points for a LOL.
These points only apply to actions taken since the "forum software update" of October 2016.
This question gets asked on a regular basis. Here's a thread from about 1 year ago:
