What do stars at the top of the post mean?

Sorry, I guess this is explained somewhere on this site but please consider me a typical lazy newbie seeking someone to be charitable with a quick (and undeserved) answer.
I see that some posters have a few hundred posts and 3 stars. Some with 14,000 have 3 stars also while some with fewer than 12,000 have 4 stars.
I think stars must be a good thing and one day I should like to have more.
Again, I apologize for my ignorance and laziness as I am at work.

Wow! I'll bet you must be. Thanks. Perhaps my question is a good one for both of us.
I am pretty sure that it means the number of quality posts one has contributed.

How is this for * quality:
PCGS is the best TPGS in the whole wide world. The owners and staff are the best there can ever be. If you want the best holder ever made, PCGS cannot be beat. Collector's universe, the forums, the people who run the forms and all the knowledgeable folks who have expanded my numismatic knowledge here make this my favorite sight on the Internet. * or ** ? LOL.
There was a thread like that called something like "Mr. David Hall" lol

your member status. More stars, the longer you have been here and the more posts you have made
gotta make a post so i can check my stars.
Repetition of ignorance is ignorance raised to the power two.
BUT some members on this thread have 23,174 posts (3 stars) and 5343 posts (4 stars). So that cannot be it. It makes more sense to award a star based on quality of info; however, I'm sure many members here would get ******* + which would get out of hand. Who assigns the stars, the web master?
posting to check star status!

I don't believe it has anything to do with time since I had three stars after 1 month , more or less.

I have three stars but no idea what I did to earn one much less three
In your profile (click on your icon), it shows "points". combo of posts, time, badges, agrees, likes, lol's, etc. Member with 5343 posts had more "points" than the member with 23,174 posts due to more agrees, lol's
I'm not sure of the exact algorithm but stars are awarded based on the number of "likes", "agrees", post count, etc. Deductions are made for "disagrees" and I think for "spam" and "abuse" (not sure).
As milestone totals are reached, stars are added. I believe 5 stars is the highest...at least it's the highest we've seen so far (ricko).
The whole thing is rather silly and a little puerile. But I guess we have to live with it.
Lance.
The David Hall thread was awesome. Some guy posted a picture of a kid having crap wiped on his nose at a petting zoo. I have not laughed that hard in a long time!!!! It fit the thread perfectly.
Me too.
Edit: Woo-hoo! 3 stars!

The stars seem to be based on the points in your profile. I think mine went from 3 stars to 4 stars once I got 500 points. @ricko is the only one I've seen with 5 stars, so I would guess that happens at 1000 points.
It seems you get points when people like or agree with your posts, not when you make posts. Might get points for other stuff too, but I really haven't figured it all out
Doesn't matter too much to me either, I just come here for fun and to learn stuff

I never really noticed the stars. I guess I need to pay better attention.

It's "TOE" the line!
Forfeit one star!!!
I just looked...I have 3 stars....for some reason that impressed me
I believe this is correct. Expanding on this slightly, it appears the scale is:
* = 0 - 49 points
** = 50 - 99
*** = 100 - 499
**** = 500 - 999
***** = 1000 +
I doubt people really care if their posts show ** or ***.
But *** and higher suggests a person has posted quite a lot, and some of their posts got positive responses.
As a test, I clicked on Insider2's username, and it said he had 75 points.
I then clicked on "Like" on his post, and checked his username again, and it had 76. So a Like gives you 1 point....
I thought it was for the uniqueness of you user name? Just kidding, I really hadn't paid any attention to them until entering this discussion. Either way, I want more! Stars = Good

First five star forum member I've seen!!!!
Congrats RickO!!!!!
If he ever posts pics, the sky's the limit on how many stars he could get.
Could they be counting..........Cheers?
If ricko has 5 stars, it must help to prefer white coins.........
Never knew this website existed. Looks like it could be a good research source. Wish the search was a little better but it will do. Nice way to kill time when I have no money to spend on coins but need to get my coin fix.
As to the whole stars issues. PCGS knows coin collectors are...addicted to collecting coins, so now we must collect stars on here too. The cycle never ends. LOL
Hey...be quiet...you only have 3 stars LOL
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I only have 2 stars.
Not a big deal to me.
I tried to 'copy and paste' mintage figures in a Daniel Carr thread and failed at it.
I received 9 disagrees from that one thread.
@Sandman70gt
Never tried that... interesting.... Cheers, RickO
I believe you only get points for positive things, likely get lowered by the amount of disagree and spam clicks. Then we don't know how many points you get for each badge you earn. I think we should start a research project and get the gov mint to give us millions to research how it is possible that Ricko has 1817 points.

That we, collectively care about a result derived from the data collected, causes questions, WGAF?
Unfortunately I can't give you both a Like and an LOL to add to your point total. I totally agree, and my comment was totally in jest. But thanks for quoting me because I will probably get a new badge soon because of it.
