Number 1 and easiest to spot are the wide flat rims produced by the single coin press squeeze. You go from there with the lesser diagnostics that are published.

Dang Bob did you get a scope for those shot. Nocturnes are great. Notes and everything. Wow. I’m impressed.

Some of the photos are blown up CoinFacts pix. I just put circles around a few diagnostics. Pictures are worth a thousand words. :)

Both the VDB and 1909 used one pair of dies. The 1909 reverse die was different from the VDB reverse die. Both the 1909 and the VDB used the same obverse die.

I asked the wrong question. Are each of these coins found in completely different die states than imaged above?

In regard to the photos I posted it doesn't matter. These diagnostics are found in all die states.

edited: Since I have corrected my previous response that there were 2 obverse and reverse dies used for the 1909 MPL, the photos I posted were for obverse and reverse die #1.

This has been updated since the publication of Kevin Flynn's book, "Lincoln Cent Matte Proofs". There have been 2 confirmed obverse and reverse dies used for the 1909 matte proof.
