Lost this at auction once, bought it, sold it, rebought it in 2017.

I have posted this one a few times lately in various threads. But still my favorite.
A lot of great pieces in 2017 but this stands out.
This is probably the best that I can do...this year.

For me I think it's a toss-up between these:
**Baker 448N, Musante GW-900. **
A double head mule of the two obverse dies that are normally paired with the reverses of the Lovett's Battle Series So-Called Dollars. The normal Battle Series pieces are tough to obtain in copper. This mule is basically uncollectible, with 2 struck in copper and 1 struck in silver. Considering that huge die crack, it's no wonder why the mintage was so low! This one is strongly double-struck and absolutely gorgeous. Neither Rulau nor Musante could find an example to photograph.
**Julian AM-26, Lambert's Patented Photo Processes. **
Julian lists about 600 different medals struck at the US Mint through 1892, and most of them show up at auction from time to time. This was on my list of "missing in action" pieces where I couldn't find an example anywhere. I had no auction records. Julian didn't have a photograph, and described it from the surviving dies. The NNP finally came up with a single listing -- from an auction in 1882. Julian lists 19 struck in silver and 6 in bronze. I have no idea where the others went to. At least now I have one!
Just because it's cool, under graded and different. Lots of green, too, which is a good thing.

That is tough! I'd have to say this one was the one I found myself staring at more than any other. Just amazing color and luster pictures sell it short big time. Needs a reholder unfortunately.

As a transplant from Michigan to North Carolina when I retired, I've been looking for a Bechtler. Took me 5 years to find this one. Bechtler K4, N reversed, NGC AU555 CAC. A throwback to our first gold rush in the Carolinas and Georgia.

While it might be still a bit early for this thread to hit the streets, kudos to @Boosibri for getting it started and posting a phenomenal coin. That 1796 QE is pretty mesmerizing, as is that CAL QE commemorative @topstuf . For me, it was a tough call... almost a 3-way tie, but I'll concede the one top spot to this one...

I picked this IHC up in Denver from Rick Snow. It’s my one and only Indian Head cent.....so far.
It's been a busy year. Between Dec 2016 and Jan 2017 I sold my Peace dollar set which was #9 on the Registry at the time. I figured the $$ would be better used for this, which is slowly nearing completion. It will include a garage bay, an extra-large bay for an RV, a heated office, and a game room for a theater, pool table, etc. The first grandchild is scheduled to arrive in May and someday I imagine there will be campouts and sleepovers out in the shop:
As for coins, it's a tough decision, but this one brings a smile to my face every time I pull it out:

The battle scars of all the good times
It was a busy year for me, I bought (so far) a total of 50 coins. This one has to be my favorite though, it was purchased raw off eBay and sent to PCGS where it graded MS-64+ and then made it's way to CAC where it green beaned.
It's been a wonderful year for me, after 8 years I'm finally in a position to start rebuilding my collection. This piece puts a smile on my face.
I was afraid someone would post a thread like this.

U.S. Type Set
For me it is not even a rare coin, one with outstanding toning or a top pop. But the story behind it is what I like. This summer my brother (born in 1977) turned 40. As I have mentioned to several here, we have been drawn much closer through our now mutual interest in coin collecting. He always wanted a Carson City coin (non-Morgan). I decided to pick this up for him in a Heritage auction. An 1877-CC 10c in an old, immaculate NGC 63 holder with a green CAC sticker. So for his 40th, I got him a really nice 100 year birth CC coin!
