It's a close race between an 1854-O Three Dollar Gold, a 1936 Satin Proof Nickel and a Lincoln medalet, but this 1877 Twenty Cent Piece completed my set, minus the 1876-CC, of course, once again.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

It's been a wonderful year for me, after 8 years I'm finally in a position to start rebuilding my collection. This piece puts a smile on my face.
Very nice, i like this coin alot. My favorite color patterns

This is probably the best that I can do...this year.
The fork shaped clash under the E and partially in the leaves doesn't appear to match up with anything on the obverse.
That's the opening where Miss Liberty's arm is partially closed while holding the pole that has the Liberty Cap atop.
I seem to be able to make out a similar "fork shaped" impression above the shoulder on the obverse. What is going on when you can see it on both sides?
I really have to say WOW!!! There are some amazing coins in this thread. Thanks to all who posted these treasures. I have only bought 3 coins this year and nothing really worth posting.

For me it is not even a rare coin, one with outstanding toning or a top pop. But the story behind it is what I like. This summer my brother (born in 1977) turned 40. As I have mentioned to several here, we have been drawn much closer through our now mutual interest in coin collecting. He always wanted a Carson City coin (non-Morgan). I decided to pick this up for him in a Heritage auction. An 1877-CC 10c in an old, immaculate NGC 63 holder with a green CAC sticker. So for his 40th, I got him a really nice 100 year birth CC coin!
Way to go bro,,,,,,, nice coin and a nice gesture.
Short list for me this year, but really like this one.

(Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose, Cardinal.
Nice - tried to grade that before the slab picture and was thinking 67Br - great OGH and provenance!

I wanted one of these Montreal Canadian tokens the second I saw it, as the merchant subject made me laugh. It's scarce and fetches around $800.00+/- at auction. I stumbled across this example on which the seller was quite aware of it's value, but it was fully encrusted with dark gray muck. Up for a conservation challenge I bought it for pennies on the dollar. It's resided atop my clothes dryer in a small Tupperware container submersed in mineral oil since March. I've changed the oil 5-6 times, and it's almost all off with just some trace hugging the rims. The proof like surfaces beneath the muck have not been disturbed so I'm quite happy with it's resurrection. Photographed just for this thread... Back into oil it goes

Julian lists about 600 different medals struck at the US Mint through 1892, and most of them show up at auction from time to time. This was on my list of "missing in action" pieces where I couldn't find an example anywhere. I had no auction records. Julian didn't have a photograph, and described it from the surviving dies. The NNP finally came up with a single listing -- from an auction in 1882. Julian lists 19 struck in silver and 6 in bronze. I have no idea where the others went to. At least now I have one!
Love this medal!

It's been a busy year. Between Dec 2016 and Jan 2017 I sold my Peace dollar set which was #9 on the Registry at the time. I figured the $$ would be better used for this, which is slowly nearing completion. It will include a garage bay, an extra-large bay for an RV, a heated office, and a game room for a theater, pool table, etc. The first grandchild is scheduled to arrive in May and someday I imagine there will be campouts and sleepovers out in the shop:

Wow, some awesome finds. Sure alot of beautiful toning.
I bought a lot of dimes this year, but took a little break from the mercs for this for my type set.
Here is my favorite purchase this year. There were some others that were close but to me it beats those hands down. I seriously doubt that I will top this one on the next 11 days.
Both are electrotypes, but really nice ones. The white metal electrotype came directly from the family whose ancestor created it in the early 1800's, with a continual provenance from then until now.
YOU get a like and YOU get a like,

EVERYBODY gets a like.
Congratulations all.
Fantastic pieces.
Great thread.
Hard to choose a favorite for the year, but this one is probably right up there with my favorite for 2017. Rare piece, with a high grade and tons of eye appeal...
Thanks to @TomB, he gave me the opportunity to reacquire this little gem in January of this year. It is one of my favorite coins in my small collection and I like to think it is representative of my collecting strategy - great eye appeal coins (in my judgment) with some characteristic that makes them distinctive. How many barber dimes have you seen that look like this?
I'd also like to say that Dr. Bush is a dealer that is someone that I would trust unequivocally with any coin matter. He exemplifies integrity and high standards in everything he does. I think collectors should cultivate a small group of trusted dealers as part of their strategy to enjoy and help navigate this hobby.

Tough choice. But here are two worthy of a favorite for 2017. One quite rare, the other quite cool.

One of, if not, the MOST eye appealing example of this unbelievably difficult DM!
Congrats, Lance!
If I owned it, it would no doubt be my most favorite acquisition of the year too!

This would be my favorite, picked up for under $50 on Ebay, graded at PR68 DCAM at our host.

I'm enjoying working on this one....

Insert witicism here. [ xxx ]
@Broadstruck
Various people have expressed similar concerns, but if she needs me, at least she'll know where to start looking.
Was a tough choice. Between either a ‘00-P Cheerios Sacagawea in a PCGS MS 68 holder, or the ‘11-D $2.5 in 62, for 2017.
Opted for the quarter eagle. Starting a registry set. Why not , right ?
People here bought some very nice coins this year [and a "Brasher" @Weiss ]

PS @weiss I could use that VF30 Large Planchet
