WOW what a beauty! I think it will grade at least 65

  • BoosibriBoosibri Posts: 12,435 ✭✭✭✭✭

    64 perhaps 65

I think it depends on if you are sending it to our host or ATS. I think NGC would easily go 65 with a chance at a 66 on it (They really seem to go easy on GSA's. Our host I believe would grade it a 65 possibly a 64/64+ on a bad day.

Nice coin! Why grade it? Seems awesome the way it is....if you do, my thoughts lie in the direction of 64+/low 65.

Can these still be graded in GSA holder? Like I’ve mentioned I’ve been out of this for about 14 years and don’t know now.

I agree with the conscenses that it will grade 64+

I would reverse those numbers. NGC is much more conservative than you think and especially for the past year..... It's a 65 at NGC IMO, 65+ at PCGS.

Looks like it's a very nice MS-64. Oddly enough I don't think that the GSA thought it was Unc. when they sold it because the holder is not marked as such.

65 and NGC is tough on these lately.

Well will see I'm just going to guess MS66 maybe a + just because it's my coin and if you own it you can bump it a point or two looks real nice in hand.

I would see it as 64 obverse and 65+ reverse.

Are the scratches on the cheek, or on the holder?

Yes. NGC and ANACS put a sticker on the GSA holder while PCGS has a large slab that encapsulates the entire GSA slab. No matter where you send it it stays in it's original holder now unlike earlier when PCGS cracked and put "GSA" on the holder.

    I think it's a 65/65+

YUCK! was my first impression, but if I read the ANA's grading chart the fits the grade far as marks.

That's a nice dollar a little light strike you can see it in the hair, But a nice GSA we all need to remember they where in bags not roll's and in the 1800's that was a long time ago and how far we come.

No it's in the coin. But I see it in a lot of the 84's may have been in the die or a coin planchet flaw.

If you don't like the 85-CC, you would HATE the 84-CC under these same lighting conditions. The 85-CC is hands down a 65.

Disagree! My first impression of the OP's coin was "wow, very nice." My FIRST impression of the 85-CC was "Yuck, too many hits all over the place!" Then, I revised my "gut" grade from "Yuck - no way an MS-65" to possibly OK for that grade as blazing luster is very important and ANA Standards allow for minor hits in the PFA.

The fields are nicer on the OP's coin but there is chatter up the face and roller marks. Both coins have a shot at '65 due to CC luster. The 85-CC has less of a chance due to its value in that grade.

BTW, I examine coins in all types of light so I tend to ignore its effects in an image. Heck, with a little rotation and tipping we can make the 85-cc look like a "gem" even in that bright light. :p

One thing to consider is the 85 images are hiding nothing while the 84 could be hiding plenty as the images aren't as high of quality. (not implying OP is intentionally trying to hide anything just that the 85's images are better)

    I'm split between 64 or 65.

I hope you get a 65, and that's my guess.

One other thing to consider. AFAIK, NGC does not guarantee the grade of CC dollars in the case with the grading label on the outside - so, more chance at a higher grade (deserved or not) to make the customer happy! :)

With the new images, I still stick with 65. The neck marks are in the focal area and will hold it back.

Definitely an example of an image that's hiding literally everything. You can't pick out one bag mark from your image and there have to be multiple to warrant a 64, they're not accidentally grading a 67+ as a 64. So it may be undergraded just impossible to field a guess with those images.

    Nice looking coin regardless though
