Finally, 1877 Twenty Cent Piece !!!

BillJonesBillJones Posts: 34,606 ✭✭✭✭✭

I received this 1877 Twenty Cent Piece today, which completes my set. No, I won't be getting an 1876-CC or the 1875-S presentation coin.

The grade is PR-64, Cameo. This is not the easiest coin in the world to photograph. It was once in an NGC PR-65 holder, and the auction photos did not do it justice. The mirrors are unbroken under the toning and there are very few marks. I thnk the hint of a finger print in the left obverse keeps this coin from grading higher.

Many thanks to forum member "Regulated," who is an associate at Kagin's, for locating this piece for me.

Nice, bright, sharp coin in a good grade.

I like the toning and, yes, I could live with the fingerprint.

Nice! Also looks cameo to me, but sometimes I am fooled by the toning.

I also noticed that there isn't much difference in price between cameo and non-cameo for this piece. Perhaps because all of the 350 pieces minted have some degree of cameo contrast.

I have two Proofs that are labeled "Cameo" and two others that are not. The two "plain" examples have cameo aspects to them, but it's not strong enough to rate the designation. Those two coins are toned to an even blue overall that would make the cameo harder to see, but when they are under a strong light, it's not defined well enough.

Probably not because I have not been the under bidder or even a bidder for any of the so-so or run of the mill pieces that have sold for the very high prices. I was the under bidder on the remarkable PR-66 example that Legend sold for almost $40,000. I was totally out or well back in the pack on the rest of the pieces. I either liked them a little or didn't like them at all.

    What a beautiful set. Huzzah!

Your 1875-S in that old holder is the best example of a late die state of the BF-14 that I have ever seen.
The more that I learn about these coins, the more I appreciate that you guys share your stuff.
