I found my first silver coin of the year today, a 1962-D dime. It's from my stained silver site and is stained, of course. I also found a wheat cent today.

congrats on the first silver coin of the year and getting on the board.

Just like Ricko, we're supposed to 3 to 8 inches into tomorrow. Hope it's more like 3 than 8. Getting the itch to get out again.

It will be a long time before any MD'ing in this area.... with the last two storms we have well over a foot on the ground... and no sign of melting. Oh well... good time for research... or searching coin piles... :);) Cheers, RickO

The warm up in Illinois is probably at your expense. It is supposed to get as warm as the low 60s here this coming weekend.

Must be nice! It'll probably be weeks before we can get out again. We didn't get much from yesterday's storm but it added to the storm from a few days ago

We had beautiful weather today, temperatures in the 60s. The only oldies I could find were a pair of wheat cents though.

Up to 49 degrees here...before noon... and later this week it is supposed to hit 67... might be the end of the snow.... YIPPEE.... Cheers, RickO

I dug an interesting old 25 cent trade token today in the hunted out park. It's the size of a nickel and is in outstanding condition. It says Colosimo's, Chicago's Oldest Cafe, 2126 S. Wabash Ave. That's an old gangster hangout, in business from 1909 until the 1940s or so, demolished in 1958 according to the internet.

That is a great find.... especially when you have the history like that.... Wonder if there are any other 'gangster' things in the ground there.... :oB) Cheers, RickO

I went to a place today that I haven't hunted for quite a while. I managed to find a worn 1943-S war nickel near where I made some good finds in the past. I dug my first ever war nickel at the same site back in March of 2015.

A '43S.... that is cool.... War nickels...having silver... are great, but finding an S mint is even more uncommon. Cheers, RickO

Just a wheat cent today, first time I've detected in a couple of weeks.

Welcome back, your reports were missed..... hope all is well. A wheatie is nice...Really nice if it were a copper 1943 cent... :D Well, sometimes great finds are made.... that is why we are in this hobby... Cheers, RickO

Another wheat cent at the muddy site during a very brief hunt today. I'm hoping to get out for at least a couple hunts this week.

I went to the school site today for the first time in months. I dug two wheat cents, a Buffalo nickel that needs cleaning to see a date, and a 1949-D dime.

Still producing at the school site eh? With the spring melts and rain you should be able to get some deeper targets

I went to a new place today for a brief hunt. I only had an Explorer SE Pro with me today, and regretted that I didn't bring my Etrac with a small coil. This place was so full of junk that my threshold often cut out entirely. I still managed to find two wheat cents and a beautiful condition 1938 Mercury dime though.

That is great.... a Merc is always a nice find.... and in good condition too. Junky areas sometimes contain a lot of treasure.... tough to hunt, but have their rewards. Cheers, RickO

Four wheat cents today: two from the school site and two from a new place that I probably will never revisit.

You have been hitting the wheaties pretty good lately... No zincolns at all?? Why will you never revisit that site?? Cheers, RickO

I did some research and lined up eleven new places to hunt. I visited the first and second places on my list today. The second place was full of fill dirt; but, the first place was pretty good. I dug a 1961-D dime shortly after arriving. A while later I dug a 1952 dime on a strong one way signal. I also dug four wheat cents today.

Well done... research pays off.... well, not always, but frequently.... Cheers, RickO

Congrats. I always hate asking for permission but it's a necessary evil to get better places

Today I revisited the place where I had good results on Friday. I dug nine wheat cents and an old trade token.

with that many wheats, there has to be some silver hiding. Is the ground saturated from the spring rain/thaw?

  • Options
    rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

Wow...nine wheaties....there MUST be some silver hiding there.... Check that token...if in good condition, some - repeat some - are quite valuable. Cheers, RickO

I haven't had much opportunity to metal detect in recent weeks; however, it rained extremely hard last night. I decided today would be a good time to visit the local hunted out park. I managed to find a 1963 dime. I presume the coin was on edge because my pinpointing was way off and the original signal wasn't very strong despite the coin being only about six inches deep.

I went back to the hunted out park today and managed to find a 1936 Buffalo nickel and a 1915-D wheat cent.

I was able to get out detecting today for the first time in quite a while. I found a 1943 Mercury dime, a 1944-D war nickel, and four wheat cents.

Welcome back ...... been nasty, rainy weather here.... Not conducive to mountain walking or heavy woods/fields where I would normally go (cache hunting)... so have not been out for a while either. Cheers, Ricko

I went back to the same place today. I got a 1951 dime, a 1958-D dime, and eleven wheat cents dating back to 1917.

I did some research and went to a great old site today. I dug up a 1905 Barber dime in EF and a 1919-D Mercury dime in AU or mint state. These are the best two coins I've ever dug. I'll post a photo later. I also dug a 1914 wheat cent today.

I only have 15 U.S. silver coins this year. I'm slightly behind the pace of last year and way behind the pace of 2015. I found 46 last year and 92 in 2015.

I dug three Mercury dimes today: 1917, 1927-D, and 1943. The 1943 is nice; but, the other two are worn. I also dug six wheat cents from 1910 to 1928. A 1910 and 1916 were stuck together in the same hole, wonder when they were dropped.
