Looks like it was altered after being slabed somehow. Can't see PCGS letting
this one go through.I have read that some other seller on the bay can alter the toning inside the slab.

Nope but it's in a problem-free holder. The cross reminds me somewhat of some toning patterns I've seen on Morgans. I wonder if they were in similar environments.

Yes, I bet this coin was whisked back in time using a new quantum time displacing machine called the Application Transporter (AT for short), but I could be wrong. It might have been placed by a time traveler in a unopened Mint bag in 1878 and developed that toning naturally over the past 100 years... lol

Look at the letter E in LIBERTY, there is a right angle...the only way to get a right angle is to mask an area to restrict a color change. This cannot be done 'inside' the slab.

I call these "carry your cross" coins (just in time for Good Friday, too). I have seen a few Silver Eagles toned in a cross-like pattern. I have seen many Morgans exhibit this off-centered cross pattern. Highly doubt this was toned in the slab. I have seen raw examples of this type of toning. Also, WoodenJefferson is correct, based on my understanding of the nature of toning.

Noted, I wasn't specifically referring to either of us suggesting it was MA, but depending on the TPG definition of MA for slabbing purposes. If it was toned raw and then slabbed, then regardless of what we think, it seems that the TPG decided it was MA.
It also seems like the "Carry Your Cross" slabbing pattern is more likely to be done outside the slab than in.

On Morgans it would most likely be EOR (end of roll) toning where the tabs happen to have been folded as such.

steveben, Have you seen this in person? Reason I ask is that before Xmas, there was a raw example being auctioned on ebay. The stripes were bright red and blue with the white being the untoned silver. It had the appearance of a US flag draped across Miss Liberty. That coin wreaked of being hand made and still brought over 300 IIRC. The Docs may be using cardboard to facilitate the toning pattern, but I believe these are contrived.
I would love to hear the thoughts of anyone who could explain how this might have happened over time as in the PCI holders and their distinctive toning patterns. Wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong.

I agree with the ugly POS comment. I would give silver spot for it and sell it for silver. Keeping it the garage until sold. It doesn't deserve to be with real coins!

That ASE is just as NT as the thousands more wildly toned examples also slabbed. There are a number of ways that pattern could form from wrapper edges to rubber bands to other forms of storage/display.
The real wow is the asking price. That's an AsTronomical price.
