My first half eagle NEWP in a LONG Time...and it's a nice one!

I have not been active in rare gold for awhile now for a couple of reasons. My numismatic interests shifted to Spanish Colonial pieces and I have built a fine set with the help of a few dealers. My original interest and numismatic love is in branch mint half eagles.
The 38-C $5 does NOT come nice. This piece is by far the most attractive example that I have seen with most being either unattractive and heavily abraded or completely unoriginal and processed. The problem has been that I just haven't seen any pieces which I thought to be really exceptional. Well this piece looks exceptional!
Feel free to post some Charlotte gold.

That DWN highlight did not last long!
I like the die crack on the reverse, though it looks to have wiped out the detail in the eagle's right leg. Character!
That is a really nice example for the grade. Here is my piece which is an even later die state with respect to the reverse crack. It took me about a year and a half to find this one. Finding a nice example of the 1838-D half eagle is much easier. "Ugly" is the word for most 1838-C $5 gold coins that are offered for sale.
I remember when you got that coin Bill. Very nice!

That is a gorgeous coin, Boosibri!
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
Beautiful coin Brian. Still looking for a nice 1838-C or D for that matter!
Here's my 1851-C for the Charlotte photos. CAC liked this one at a P-45.
Interesting pierced ear on this die.
I really like that die crack on the reverse!!!!
Many members on this forum that now it cannot fit in my signature. Please ask for entire list.
Small digs between eagles wing and "OF" are no problem?
Might be one to review when in hand.
Congrats. Looks like a nice coin.
That coin is Sweet!
Terrific looking coin, congrats!
That's how you do it! Congrats!

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Wow. Very nice!
Tom
Congrats ! Nice addition!
Brian... I hate you! No... not really, but I'm quite gels at you for beating me to this one. There I was, sitting at home with a sick kid, when I for once catch Doug's email before I would normally see it AFTER I arrive home from work in the evening. And there I was, thinking I could get it on hold before anyone else did... I text Doug... not email him, but texted him, and yet someone still beat me to it! Glad to know it was someone who really appreciates a very difficult date to find in decent, attractive condition. Great coin, B. Congrats.
And @Billjones - that is a gorgeous Choice AU example also.
And @soleagent - very nice '51-C HE... I'm pretty sure that coin spent a number of years in the White Oak River collection.
'dude
Glad someone I know got this one...I too was going to pull the trigger...but I was feeling poor today...I went with a classic head 1/2 cent from CRO instead...LOL...congratulations!!!
I pulled the trigger a few seconds too late. Great coin!
nice charlotte coins in this thread! congrats to all.
a nice looking 38-C...as rare as hens teeth.
also, that 40-C is pretty sweet, 'dude.
Fantastic.
Yeah for the issue I don't think that these are anything but minor problems, most examples have significant problems. The positives of the skin and eye appeal far outweigh any minor physical problems commiserate to the issue.

Old (branch mint) Gold...something I may never hold.

The die crack is cool - and I like the eagle's head and wings.
My other very difficult Charlotte $5. The 54-C is a real sleeper especially with a strong mintmark as depicted on this coin.

Nice Coins!
Very nice Charlotte gold... what is with the C...I like CC coins and C coins..... I must have some deep, psychological connection due likely to a childhood learning experience...

Oh well, why worry... Cheers, RickO
Then Ricko probably likes CAC...I know I do...population only 9 for 1838-C...rare as hens teeth is right...
Very nice piece, Brian!
Charlotte gold... What's not to love?
Sweet pick up!

If you could have seen some of the 1839-C quarter eagles that I've seen in AU and even a Mint State holder over the past year, you might want to revise that statement. Brillo induced shine does not make for a choice or pleasant Charoltte Mint coin.
Here is my latest - I hope that Rutherfordton qualifies as Charlotte gold. From the same era as the OP's fine piece.
I acquired it because it was minted not too awful far from my home, has some original dirt packed around some of the lettering, attractive toning, the N in ONE is reversed, and there is significant die rotation. Lots going on with this piece.

Sweet coins. Both the Eagle and Bechtler.
Terrific coin

A bunch of great rare coins in this thread.
That is a really nice 1838-C half eagle, and my favorite of the two die marriages of 38-c The toughest coin in the date/mm collection of CHG, it has a lot of demand from one year type, CHG, and Charlotte mint collectors. When I collected the series, I had a lowly PCGS VF25, that I had to pay well above price guide.
