Do you think the buyer will contact me to pay for the item they now have? * New Update* 12/20

edited December 20, 2016 5:44PM in U.S. Coin Forum

So I sold a coin on ebay in an auction a couple of weeks ago, and as usual, I shipped within my 1 day handling time required using ebay shipping labels. Within a day or two of the ebay "estimate" for arrival, I get a notice that a case has been opened because the buyer has not received the item. I messaged the buyer and apologized for the delay, asked them to be patient because of the holiday coming and resent tracking info which had been scanned twice but had since sat with "Item in transit to destination" as the last entry. After a few days, I reached back out to the buyer who responded that they understood, and we both figured that if it hadn't moved by this past Monday, it was very possible it had been lost. (12 days with no movement). I personally have had a few of my packages take the scenic route across the country a few times, but never have I had one not show up. So Monday morning bright and early the buyer contacted customer service and ebay closed the case in the buyers favor and withdrew the money from my paypal account.
Of course yesterday, 2 days after the case is closed, I see that tracking is magically moving along again. This evening the item shows delivered to it's destination.

UPDATE*
Ebay customer service manager called me today to see whether or not the buyer responded to any of the communication I sent, or paid my invoice. Because they did not, ebay granted my appeal and paid me. It only took a couple of calls and escalations to get to a person who actually had the authority, and the ability to reasonably look at the case. Thanks for all the advice and input. I will still hold out hope for a little while that the buyer will feel the pangs of guilt and either return the item or pay, and if they do, I will update again.

(PS) Before anyone asks, Yes, if the buyer pays or returns the item, I have already asked the Cust. service rep how to go about getting ebay their money back.

12/20 Update
Not to keep up the drama, but the buyer today notified me that they plan to return the coin. IF anybody is still interested, I will update again once I receive it back.

Do you think the buyer will contact me to pay for the item they now have? * New Update* 12/20

It is hard to tell with the wide variety of Ebay buyers that there are, but I said he is keeping the money and the coin. I am basing that off one other experience which is similar I had.

Call eBay now if ya know what's good for ya. Tell them the situation and hopefully they set it right. I would also contact the buyer, if he responds. I'm sorry to hear about your trouble and I hope ya work it out. I feel your pain.

To be honest, I figured they already had it (and saw that there was no scan for delivery) because of how quickly they opened the case. I figure I'll know by tonight if the person gets a guilty pang. Hopefully ebay will make it right either way.

I think he'll pay...perhaps send him a message before calling eBay. I heard a similar story and the package showed up months later and the guy paid

Call the guy. You should have his phone number. Best way to figure it out. Just be calm when you talk to the guy. Hopefully its not a big ticket item

I think since they started case at 2 weeks, they may keep it - but seller protection from PAYPAL or eBay should reimburse you if they do not pay.

Same thing has happened to me on more than one occasion. If he was initially cordial regarding the delay after you contacted him, Id bet he pays you.

USPS requires that an insured item be "lost" for 3 weeks before paying a claim.

Certainly ebay has it's share of "scammers and thieves" but I would not characterize it as "full of scammers and thieves".

If the buyer does not pay perhaps ebay or Paypal will issue you a refund. Speak with them both if necessary. Good luck.

Partial Update: Spoke to eBay, they say that because the tracking did not show movement for 3 days after case was opened, they were correct in their decision. So no appeal, even though they can see that now just 3 days later it is delivered. I requested a supervisor and they will have to call me back. Guessing that's not gonna go any better.

    What type of value?
I'm just wondering if, when they forced the repayment, it would have been worth asking the USPS to recall the item?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I'd give him about 3-5 days after the tracking # says "delivered" and then contact him once more. If he ignores you at that point, "get on the phone with cust. serv.".

A few years ago I ordered some perfume for my wife off of eBay. Never showed up. I contacted the seller and they said they had shipped so I waited about a month. Told them it never arrived and they refunded my $. Then a couple of weeks later it did arrive, where it had been all that time I have no idea. Anyway I contacted the seller to pay again and they said not to worry about it, just give them good feedback which I certainly did!

There are a lot of people in the world who would do the same thing I think.

I had a store with a postal sub-station in it for years. I was told by a postal employee at one time the PO could "bump" first class mail in favor of Priority packages during peak season. I never tried to verify this. Almost all packages are now classified as priority, but many smaller (coin size) would still be first class. So that may be the scenario here. Hopefully the customer will pay for the item now that it has been received.

You have to get with customer service. A case was opened on this issue, ebay intervened and rendered a decision, and I don't trust ebay users.

It sounds like eBay makes it too easy for the dishonest people to operate online because eBay is dolling out YOUR money in returns and not theirs and appears to lack common sense when questioned about anything.

once i bought an item from japan. the person marked it as shipped and provided a tracking number. i waited for a while...nothing. i checked the tracking number...nothing.

i worked with the seller...he said he mailed it and did not know why it hasn't arrived or there was no tracking data.

i filed a claim after a month or so of waiting. i got my refund of $150.

8 months later (i am not kidding) a package is delivered. it is the original package...with the date stamped the day the guy mailed it...it's in perfect condition. as far as everyone is concerned at this point, the ebay deal has dropped off the map right?

i paid the guy immediately with paypal and let him know i received it. he was very happy.

good luck...i hope they are honest

Get on the phone with the buyer, PayPal, and eBay, in that order. Any one of those can be a weak link in the chain of getting your money for this sale, so you're going to have to be prepared to deal with them all. Hope it goes well for you and the buyer simply sends you the money before getting eBay involved.

I've also got one of those long lost package and refund stories.

I shipped a coin to Canada through ebay and it never arrived. It was less than $400, but might not have been much less. As far as I was concerned, I was out the money. Well, six or eight months later I received an email stating that the coin arrived. It had been caught up in the Canadian postal service damaged package stream and arrived with a large gash to the package, but the coin was fine. The package also was placed in a clear, heavyweight plastic bag and contained a letter from the Canadian postal service apologizing for the damage. I also got paid from the recipient.

Stay on top of eBay customer service until you get with the supervisor. If you aren't in a hurry, they won't be either.
And meanwhile, call the buyer back, tell him you see that he finally got the item and would appreciate now being paid.

Possibly. I haven't as of yet because once you block someone you can't communicate. Wanted them to be able to message me if they wanted to.
Update spoke to a manager in the US and se asked that I wait over the weekend to see if the buyer pays my invoice. She was much easier to deal with and said that they will work at making me whole if the buyer doesn't.

This is how it works because it happened to me:
I sold some Autocad 2000 software that does not work on 256 bit systems as stated in my listing and of course the person that won the auction tried to install it on a 256 bit system. I also had no returns for listing which means absolutely nothing.
I had already transferred funds to my bank prior to the return and because of this when I made a purchase and tried to pay for the item, paypal is trying to charge me the amount due for my auction win as well as the software costs that ebay was holding. It's a messed up system and sellers are the losers in these situations.

"sellers are the losers in these situations."

Not always. I bought a route described as brand new. When it arrived, it was an open box item, and appeared to have been used (the cords were no longer wire tied. I contacted the seller telling him what I was seeing and I wanted to return it. He said, sorry, no returns. I filed a complaint with eBay, again contacting the seller describing the issues. The seller apparently called ebay as they found in his favor w/o contacting me closing the case. I couldn't even leave him a negative feedback.

Needless to say, I moved up the chain until I got to someone who understood what I was saying and I could understand them. After describing the issue, eBay policy on new items vs open box items, etc, eBay refunded me my money ($200) and told me to keep the router. As far as I know, the seller got to keep what he received.

Hopefully, you will get paid one way or the other.
