Excellent post. Absolutely a fantastic job for your first ever cabinet reconstruction. I know you must be proud of your accomplishment so far and I truly look forward to your pictorial completion. Thanks for sharing an excellent post and certainly not OT. BTW, years ago, I purchased a bundle of used drawer slides(not ball bearing, but for your drawer weight shouldn't be needed) very inexpensive. Check around and maybe purchase them a few at a time. Just a suggestion.
Thanks again,
Jim
Thanks for the nice words Jim.
I will secure the drawers a little better when everything is lined up.
Fantastic work.... That is a beautiful piece of furniture. How many drawers are filled? Hopefully there is plenty of room for additions as your collection grows. Well done, I have enjoyed the journey with you... Cheers, RickO

2 drawers on the top are completely empty, and the bottom 2 drawers are empty. I have anywhere from 2 terms to 4 terms per drawer. On top of that, I made the bottom drawer twice as deep, so I could add a pullout second level to it.
So according to that math, I'd have 24-48 years before the cabinet is full
Also, if you notice empty airtites, thats because there are medals or tokens I know exist, but they're so rare I haven't acquired them yet. I've left spaces for all known varieties.

Did you apply gliders on the sides of the drawers?
The parts list doesn't show drawer glides, and to use decent ones would probably double the cost of the project. We're talking 14 drawers!
I did not get the gliders. They are a luxury item, and I might put them in eventually. As of now, my goal was to build this as cost effective as possible for the sake of the thread. ......glides would be sexy, but would also modernize a piece that is meant to look and feel older.
@OnWithTheHunt has nailed it--absolutely fascinating thread, one of the best! The only drawback is that the thread had to end. Maybe you should try your hand at another cabinet so that we (well, actually I) can watch your progress. ( !)
Fabulous! You must be very proud. And happy it's finally finished! It came out superb.
FWIW, I had medals stored in their original cases with the foam backing. I discovered 30 years later the foam deteriorated and spoiled the medals' reverse finish.
Lance.
Beautiful cabinet, you should be proud of the workmanship and followthrough! I love me a cabinet with tons of small drawers. I'm thinking it will likely tone some of the pieces. Put a few gem Molrgans in it and see what happens!
Very well thought out and nicely done. I like it a lot for the amount of money you spent.
It certainly would of cost much more if you bought it already made.
Congratulations.
BTW I may have to copy some of your ideas, as I could use a medal cabinet too.

Agree with all regarding the coolness of your project. On the knobs vs. pulls question, I vote knobs. Just looks more classic.
By the way thanks for sharing your TV experience. I know what you mean by it being "fun." I was on an episode of the current Hawaii Five-0 in the past and just got a call back for another last week that I had to pass up due to availability - though Hawaii Five-0 Casting assured me I would remain "on the list."
Very Nice Bodin. I'm impressed with your work and your step by step progress reports and layout. A true labor of love. I especially like how you got the stain on the drawers to match the exterior when you refinished - not an easy task with different woods and ages of wood.
Well done!!
Freddie
It is not that life is short, but that you are dead for so very long.

This is a BRILLIANT idea!
I had planned on checking the medals and ribbons every couple of months for any irregularities that may be developing, but to add a "canary in the coal mine" is a great idea!
THANK YOU!
