Gorgeous cabinet, unique and made by a craftsman's hand, something to cherish. I 'd vote for pine knobs and gray felt lining for the drawers.
Reading this thread made me wish more young people would put down their iPads and undertake a creative project like this one.

PS- I will add that my father was the director of a seven-county public library system here in SE Georgia.

Just before he retired, the headquarters branch library here in in Brunswick was phasing out the old physical card catalog system and computerizing all that. I really wanted at least one of those old card catalog cabinets with their drawers, but I missed the boat on those, despite my family connection. It's probably just as well- I don't have the space at home for that kind of thing, anyway.

But I'll bet you some collector or tool guy repurposed them in a manner similar to this. They were very handsome cabinets.

Just saw your update, this is REALLY turning out nice! Maybe you can try out for Flea Market Flip...you have vision and skills!

How many hours do you have invested in this? And, last question, are you the dark haired guy with the arrow at his head?

Coming along nicely. I've been following your progress as this is the type of project I'd attempt myself, but at the moment I'm stuck renovating our new house instead. As to your last question: I like pulls over knobs, especially if you can find some of the more antique-looking pulls like you used to see on typeface drawers or card library catalogs.

    That came out great, congrats!

Looks great. Between the two, I like the pulls over the knobs. Any antique look bronze pulls available?

Agree with all regarding the coolness of your project. On the knobs vs. pulls question, I vote knobs. Just looks more classic.

By the way thanks for sharing your TV experience. I know what you mean by it being "fun." I was on an episode of the current Hawaii Five-0 in the past and just got a call back for another last week that I had to pass up due to availability - though Hawaii Five-0 Casting assured me I would remain "on the list."

Nice! Is the foam in the boxes with the medals safe to use, or is it prone to deterioration?

The pros at FOAM MART assure me that the high density foam will last over a decade before I notice anything.
I'll probably switch out the foam before then.
I'll also be monitoring for any change in color.

Good call monitoring them for change. My concerns would be that the foam either breaks down and sticks to the medals, or that it stains the medals like a rubber band would. If any of them are antiqued or lacquered, acetone for conservation is off the table once this happens.

Excellent post. Absolutely a fantastic job for your first ever cabinet reconstruction. I know you must be proud of your accomplishment so far and I truly look forward to your pictorial completion. Thanks for sharing an excellent post and certainly not OT. BTW, years ago, I purchased a bundle of used drawer slides(not ball bearing, but for your drawer weight shouldn't be needed) very inexpensive. Check around and maybe purchase them a few at a time. Just a suggestion.
    Thanks again,
    Jim
