100K over 10 Years. Your recommendations, please.

MrEurekaMrEureka Posts: 24,667 ✭✭✭✭✭
A.s.s.ume your friend or client wants to spend approximately 100K total over the course of the next 10 years. The goals are to build a truly awesome specialized collection, and for the money, the fun and the challenge to last for the full 10 years. (In other words, it should be almost impossible to spend the money wisely and quickly.) Investment potential is not a major consideration, but it does matter. Raw or slabbed, whatever makes sense.

What would you suggest?

The "donkey" filter is in full swing today.

I like varieties myself....most others do not share that sentiment though.

I would likely focus on keys and semi-keys of the different series that most interest your client.

That way, investment potential is likely covered and things that your client likes are also covered.

Edit: PCGS Plastic with CAC stickers wouldn't hurt either.

And if you can find a few that are nicely toned you will be even better!

    .

    step 1.

they should spend months buying very inexpensive raw coins and look them over often to get a feel for what they truly like and will stick with for a decade which imo, is nearly impossible as taste(s) available merchandise and prices wax and wane.

sp2nd less than $5k on the raw stuff that may even be sold off once a decision is made.

I'd go the modern gold route. All MS70 burnished American Gold Eagles.

Start a finest known Central American Republic set bidding aggressively on only the rarest pieces.

Seriously, how about a gem Spanish Colonial/Latin American type set

Fugios by variety - that would be an 'awesome specialized collection' in my opinion and would exhaust both the time and money budgets I would imagine

Put together a "history of coinage" collection featuring significant coins from the past 2600 years. Few, if any, US coins would be included.

It is impossible to answer the question without understanding what his goals and interests are. Is he drawn to collecting because of an interest in history? Or the artistic beauty of coins? Or does he want to understand values and grading. Depending upon his interests, and if he can, he should take some of that money and invest in an education...ANA Summer Camp is fun and educational. After that, he can decide.

I don't think you can ever go wrong with high quality key dates. They'll always be key dates, doubtful anything nice will come up.

Do a set of the most challenging United States series in a higher circulated grade (EF-AU) including all die marriages and possibly significant die stages.

The series? Bust Quarters from 1796 - 1838.

Ten years may not be enough time though and 100K will only get you both of the 1796's...

Other than that, it is a tremendous challenge that takes patience and focus, along with being in the right place at the right time to acquire the more rare examples.

Go to Early United States Coins - to order the New "Early United States Half Dollar Vol. 1 / 1794-1807" book or the 1st new Bust Quarter book!

I like this a lot. Deserves it's own thread. What would you include?

Complete Carson City dollar set in nice, original AU or better. Includes the 4 Seated Liberties, the Trade dollars (including 75 S/CC and 76-DDR) and all the Morgans in MS. Some of these don't come up often and the ones that do aren't always eye appealing - that's the challenge!

Get a handful of U.S. coins from the 1790s which precede Seated Coinage. Make sure they are problem free and in your opinion, sold for the grade. Stick with AU or better. These coins should be such that you shouldn't expect to see many new ones in the grades purchased being 'made' in the next ten years.
Focus on Draped Bust and Capped Bust coinage. And it will take quite some time to do this.

US$100K isn't too much on US coins today. With today's Internet, and the condition of impossible to spend the money quickly, I would probably suggest to work on US colonial coins with original surface. Today's $100k might let the owner achieve 50% to 60% completion with one to two coins highlight the collection.

If the fund is US$1M, the options would be much wider and more interesting.

Sadly $100 thousand isn't very much when you are buying choice U.S. coins these days. I learned that when I was putting together the eight piece Charlotte Mint type set. Unlike the Dahlonega set, which has the costly 1855-D gold dollar and the 1854-D Three Dollar Gold it, the Charlotte set has the less costly 1855-C gold dollar and there is no Three Dollar Gold coin at all. Still coins like the 1838-C and 1839-C half eagles come up to ruin your budget. You can buy those coins for less money, but coins you will find at cheep prices look like something cat ate and regurgitated, not just pulled in from the wild and left on your doorstep.

He might think about working a set of British monarchs, which a project I've been working on for a couple of years. You can go back to a William the Conqueror penny (1066, which can be purchased in nice shape (EF) for a little less than $1,000), and work your way up from there to the present with Queen Elizabeth II. I've got some gold coins in my set, so it's gotten a bit expensive, but for a $100,000, you could put together a really nice collection.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I like this idea, but 100K won't get us very far. A world cl***** collection would probably take ten times our budget.

Seriously, how about a gem Spanish Colonial/Latin American type set

I considered C.A.R. 8 reales. The time and money parameters are about right.

A "gem Spanish Colonial/Latin American type set" would take many millions. Some subsets would no doubt work well.

But this is a US Forum, so let's stick to US coins for now.

The series? Bust Quarters from 1796 - 1838.

Ten years may not be enough time though and 100K will only get you both of the 1796's...

Other than that, it is a tremendous challenge that takes patience and focus, along with being in the right place at the right time to acquire the more rare examples.

As you say, 100K is not enough. On the other hand, doing just the Heraldic Eagle or just the Capped Bust set sounds like a good idea, as long as we avoid mint state coins.

Select $20 Double Eagles PCGS AU58 - MS65 and CC Dollars MS63-MS65. Enough to fill up medium to large size bank box. Substantial number would be CAC coins. Like to bulk it up with large coins.

Hardly a challenge in that. The money would be gone in a week or two.

Can a complete SLQ set be something to consider for that budget and time frame?

$10K over 10 years could build a pretty spectacular collection in a variety of different exonumia areas.

Given your opening parameters, I am going to *****ume you want the person to spend at least $7,000 a year, with the extra $3,000 a year saved up for the occasional bigger ticket purchase. Personally, I Love the DBHE design, and am not willing to spend Big money on dinky coinage. So, I'd suggest slabbed DBHE quarters, halves and dollars. You could put together a lovely collection in the EF40 to AU55 range, with maybe one higher grade coin of one of these denominations as the centerpiece.

That would take ten years. And you can buy a coin a month to keep your interest up. You'll have to stop a few months for the key coins, and they have to be bought when available, you can't plan around those. There are also all sorts of varieties for those so inclined. The budget will also allow for a quite a few uncs, the F-EF set is only about a 250K proposition. Perhaps add seated dimes and half dollars to this set?

It depends on your parameters. For example, you might demand fully struck - full head, full shield, full everything - and perfectly original pieces. That might actually turn an otherwise easy set into a brutal 10-year challenge. And on the budget, they couldn't all be gems, of course.

Have them pick a year they like and build a great mint or proof set. Whatever they can afford.

I would do as DollarAfterDoll.. suggested. I'd *****emble a nice original toned, Full Head, MS-62 - MS-64 Standing Liberty Quarter Set. To stay within budget, omit the 1918/7-S. I think that would be a nice challenging set to put together. The challenge will be finding nice toned coins that would fit well together.

So many different descriptions of "awesome" sets. Everyone has there own idea of awesome and if we had an extra $100,000 to put that set together we each would be happy with the result but in no way would the set be "world cla ss".

You can't even put a world cla ss set of Silver Eagles in proof and uncirculated together for $100,000. Incredibly, the PCGS Price Guide shows a complete set in MS70 and PF70 DCAM is north of $150,000. I know, I know, you wouldn't waste that money on such a set and neither would I, but I'm just saying, you have to build a set that would ultimately please yourself or your friend or client.

For me, and I know you purists are going to hate this but I would put together a beautiful set of Morgan Dollars again. You could put in 30 to 40 in Gem MS65 or 66 and another 40 or more in MS60 to 64. That's about 85 in uncirculated and the last 10 keys in AU for $100,000. And I know you think you could put the whole set together at the next big coin show and I don't doubt that you could pick up much of it but if you wanted to build a genuine world-cla ss-looking set you could do it for $100,000 but it would take you ten years to do it. And they would be so shiny! image

Or else I really like 291fifth's idea of a "history of coinage" collection. That is a great ideal.

I completely disagree. For example, you could build world cl***** collections of the following for 100K.

Contemporary Counterfeit Bust Half Dollars ("Bogus Busties". They're widely collected, but 100K would still go a long way.)

1866 Shield Nickels by die variety and die state (You may think I'm kidding, but this would make a great 10 year project.)

Franklin Half Dollar errors (100K could get you the best collection ever *****embled.)

And like Broadstruck said, there are lots of opportunities in exonumia. For example, check out Charmy's collection. Not a "big money" collection, but clearly "world cl*****".

    Lesher Dollars

Per PCGS: 17 types (not my area of expertise so there could be more)

Per PCGS only 175 total graded

Quick look at HA archives seem that they range around the R-5 category

HA archive prices between $1,300 - $7000 per piece (again not my area of expertise so some could be much more)

They don't seem to come up for auction very much.

    So 10 years $100K

You could probably make a very decent set.

If the collector has no specific interest, it would be hard to select any area....Does he

expect to 'become' excited about something? Or is he mainly putting his money in

storage with some growth potential... to sell as a college fund perhaps? It is not a

lot of money for any kind of high end collection...that could go on one coin... so, a

choice should be in the area of really popular, low to mid range coins that will be

    easy to move. Cheers, RickO

Build a 1877 proof set of 3C, 5C, and 20C in CAM or DCAM highest grade possible. Any leftover, get some of the 1936 proof issue in high grade.

Buy mediocre coins in Fine to AU, $50 to $200 coins but not so common with an occasional key date $400 to $1000, one every two years, the kind of coins most collectors can afford. Forget the specialized coins, markets that can be costly but narrow.

I sort of like this idea but also don't like dumping a ton into the 4 rare CC coins that would probably be worth half the set or more.

How about an original "S" mint seated quarter set in VF-XF. You could probably also squeeze in the "O" mints as well for under $100K. I'd focus on the top 12 or so keys of the group so that they would be exceptional. Another way to do it would be to buy only the top 25-40 key/semi-key dates w/o the CC's.

A set of seated halves F-XF (less the 53-0 and 78-s) would also be a nice one.

$100K won't be able to buy them all, but could get many of them and would be a heck of a nice collection. For extra challenge, look for all the same grade and surface quality, say perfect VFs or EFs or AUs. Although, reading the OP, maybe a type set, even if "early" coins, would be the opposite of "specialized"?

  • I would advise him to spend the entire $100k on one truly awesome coin ... or maybe something more esoteric like a high grade silver Libertas medal. For that amount, he can have an average size collection of "nice" coins, or he can have one AMAZING coin that he wants to pull out of the safe and look at all of the time ... I would choose the latter ;-)

I like varieties myself....most others do not share that sentiment though.
