Here's a coin that I bought at the 1995 Early Spring ANA in Atlanta and later had it crossed -- from NGC to PCGS (at the same grade). The die crack on the reverse runs from rim to rim -- and goes through the upper arrowhead. The images are courtesy of BluCC Photos.

That's a beautiful late-state 1836 quarter. It looks like there is even a cud forming along the crack that goes through Liberty's ear.

I don't know about "shattered" but this thread needs a Peace dollar:

I think I can see 8 distinct die cracks, both obverse & reverse.

I think when the Broas Pie Bakers first saw one of their tokens struck from a shattered die they must have said, " That looks like a pie that's been sliced! Keep making them."

This one is shattered on both sides plus has a light die clash of the indian on the reverse.

This one is unlisted (at least when I bought it years ago) and they must have been running out of dies so they used two reverses. The first reverse is clean but the 2nd one is shattered with a very heavy clash of the indian head.

I have at least one more of these but it is zinc and I am having trouble getting a good image. It appears to be an early die state when it was just starting to shatter.

The die breaks are so common on the Broas Bros. pieces that I have sometimes wondered if the coiner they used took one of the shattered dies, made a hub from it, and used that hub with raised lines on it to sink brand-new dies with the "die cracks" already in them.

Why are Shield nickels so commonly seen with numerous die cracks? Overuse of the dies, beyond what was done in the production of Liberty nickels, for example? Or perhaps inferiour alloy used to make the dies?

The 25% nickel alloy used in the coins was too hard for the die steel available at the time. Eventually the die steel improved.

That's an interesting thought. I agree they appear to be super common. I have one that is pretty red and would be curious to see where this goes. I wonder how many we can identify and if they can all be identified as having the same cracks (e.g. hub) vs. having a progression.

Here is a good shattered die.

Here's one that runs from the first "S" of STATES to the "C" of AMERICA - rim to rim. It had a profound effect on the sharpness of all '54-C strikes (both reverse and obverse) with this broken reverse die. Die options were most certainly limited back in the day at Charlotte, and the mint milked this one for all she was worth.
