It was all TOO much, but not enough!

Like I sad, at one point we are passing 1813-1832 $5/$2.50 gold coins along a line like they were nickles! These are ULTRA RARITIES (10-25 known!) and most were higher grades than any already graded!

SG - have you been back since the Smithsonian opened the current exhibit? By the way, on page 9 or 10 of this thread some of the pictures are back. Would be interesting to see recently taken photos (assuming some of these same coins are now on public display as I understand many are) coupled with the originals. I am assuming Jphn Q Public is allowed to take photos?

I work only a block away from the exhibit. One of these days I'll take some pictures on my lunch break and post them up. The exhibit is incredible to behold in person, but the lighting is terrible.

Dudes...this is the "hidden secret, double probation" vault! It's not for public drooling. image

I reread this and I can see and feel the excitement. And again, the stock market on 10/9/2007 was in the midst of an actual crash...all week, and that day they were calling the market LIMIT DOWN (-1200 pts.) before the open! It opened down 700 points and two of us were financial guys, one who runs a multi-billion dollar hedge fund. One hell of a start! ps. It closed -680 at 7900!

Jay, few men in life have taken the time to actually "help" me understand the market and coins, as you did in PMs. I've since deleted old correspondences, but always wanted to say publicly, "Thanks"
This thread is one of the coolest stories, because it was almost "LIVE" as you went through your experience. Or as close to "live" as we could, anyway.

The restored first post with photos is in Lance's post of 12/12/2012, which is on page 10 for me:
    http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=685278&STARTPAGE=10
    (about halfway down the page)

    Great story.

Here's another 2 threads with photos from a 2010 visit to the restored public exhibit of the collection:
    http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=796393

    http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=42&threadid=796429

Some clearer photos of some of the same coins, but the story is not as cool. :-)

Welcome back! Although you are quite opinionated, that's what I like about your posts.
Thanks for bringing up that thread, it gets us behind the walls in the Smithsonian where we would never be able to roam.

LOL, that's a hoot. We all (the curators in this case) tend to judge things by our own experience in time. I'll guarantee that none of the staff working in the Division of Numismatics in 2010 had a clue who had the same free reign in the 1960's, 1970's, or probably not even the 1980's. Or how many times some of those same folks visited.

We can also raise that number by at least 5 to 8 (probably some others) since 2010 as their visits have be publicized (NGS staffers for example). I'm pretty sure you signed a register.
