Huh? Chinese and Russian on the same coin? I read a book about this once, I think... Some war where Chinese soldiers were policing a part of Serbia? I'm going to have to dig deep in my library and find this novel. I think it was "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles"

Hey LochNess that Israel 1 Pruta is placed backwards.

The date and denomination is on the reverse - I hate when they do this.

The piastra not only has a great design, but I like the overall color and look of it, too. image

  • Such a cool reverse!

As for me, I was super busy at the ANA. I did manage to visit the floor briefly during one of my lunch breaks however. Luckily something caught my eye: a Henry VIII groat. I liked the color and the details, and just thought it was really cool.

Yes. "Pidyon Ha-ben" is a small Jewish ceremony in which parents "buy" their first-born son from a "Cohen" (a member of the tribe of priests; ha Ben means "the son"). The purchase must be made with two silver 'dollar' coins. Hence this NCLT set of silver dollar-sized coins. Basically, they are commems. Most Israely NCLT from this era commemorates a ceremony or holiday.

PCGSPhoto: Nice Groat! I was able to pick up one Charles I Farthing at a pretty good price from Josh @ Civitas and had to settle for that being my only English piece from the show. Eventually I will get pictures on here, but I was impressed with both clean legends/design and very fair price. Just not a lot of good stuff in my admittedly lower price range.

Redemption of the First Born is what that is indeed - size of American silver dollars....many in the U.S. use 5 American Morgan or Peace dollars.

    - they are 10 Lirot denom's so the kid can go spend it when he grows upimage

Not a pricey coin, and extremely common -- I found this little copper quite eye appealing, and I have always wanted an example for my collection to show off the quite unusual inset design.

A scarce 1/2 taler from german state of Mainz struck in 1732 to commemorate the sede vacante event. Only 200 minted, and this is only 1 of 2 to come to auction in last 5 years. Also issued at the same time were 1 taler, 1/4 taler, and 1/8 taler commemorative pieces, all of which are quite difficult to find.
