Guys now what? Through great investigation skills you've basically proved what has been assumed all along, apart from educating board members can we do anything further with what has been uncovered? We all know what we are up against.
BTW I have some interesting PM's on that 72 and Desert Shield box confirming ownership.
Wow! You guys are good. I am surprised with the findings. I guess these days I should not be!!
I think it is very tough for Rick to monitor every auction and see if he can tell if a consignor is bidding on his own stuff. I can only say when I contacted him about the thread on the bad 1971 Topps football racks he did send a response and ended the auctions. I know one pretty big auction house that did not do that. So I am sure he is trying but with the large number of consignments it is a difficult thing to police.
In response to one of the above posters, I personally do not enjoy seeing members of our forum being knocked down from sainthood. Especially in this case, I just find it very sad since emotionally all of us were on this ride to some extent. No matter what, I hope that other members are emotionally there for him as this is something that will be with him and his children for the rest of his life (his wife's passing). On the other hand, I find disturbing that other collectors are victims to obvious shilling. Granted, collectors should have a price in mind in what they want to pay for an item, but they should also not be subject to bidding against the item from the owner of the card. The owner should just sell their card or boxes and have a high minimum bid! I do see it as fraud as Maurice clearly does. As I mentioned before, I enjoyed the SMR article and shared it to others who have no interest in collecting and they enjoyed it too. They thought it was really cool that people that barely know each other would be a support system for a person in need. I did share the contents of this thread and I got an eye roll and the word "slimy" to a person that read the article. This can be the CU version of our own Lance Armstrong and Manti Te'o stories. I do not expect sainthood on the boards and I am sure that everyone of us has something that we are not proud of, but I do think that many of us are able to check ourselves and not participate in this type of fraud behavior.

He's also let let's just very questionable items roll after serious objections to the authenticity of the high priced item were brought to his attention...and I believe threads were poofed.
I'm not sure I buy the "too busy to check everything" excuse anymore. If someone wants to have a respectable reputation you have to do the work to earn it, you can't just say "sorry, too busy to not offer up fake items and rip people off." I think it boils down to what people do and do not want to do. I'm guessing Rick has hired people to assist in the listing and shipping of items, and why not? That aspect of it is probably no fun. So why not hire someone to do basic research on the items that you're selling? Because that's not something that is worth the money, like, you know, stuffing cards in envelopes.
Yeoman's work, fellas. I think too many people become immune to this form of surreptitious thievery because there are typically no consequences. If you take a stab at extracting what's not rightfully yours on eBay, your wrists aren't even sore. You pull a similar stunt in almost every other instance of everyday life and your world could potentially be turned upside down. Sucks being a vigilante sometimes, but when there's no one else to police this type of activity it's imperative. The alternative is casting a blind eye (like many do), and allowing the problem to become even more pervasive within the hobby.

If at any given time you have ~30,000 auctions going on, how would you track the bidding on each of your auctions? I suppose you could keep an updated "blocked bidders list", but that would require the customer to provide a valid ebay user ID. I just don't know how anyone would be able to track stuff like that.
He would have to click on each auction's bid list and back-check each person who bid on that auction. Times 30,000... and that would all hinge on whether or not his customer provided a valid ebay username.
This is all sad and we hate to see this kind of stuff. Hope it truns out ok or right. But I want to coment on this a little. Ok he has 30,000 auctions, yes. But for those 30,000 auctions he only has about 200 different people sending him those cards(Ive read here somewhere thats what the auction house said about his consignors. 200 is a little easier to manage. But yes Im sure you need to do work with the 30000 auctions to get anything done. But Forget all of that I guess. What about the cases where it was obvious they were 100% guilty of shilling there autions. What action is then taken should be the questions. So far all I see is that its to hard and cant be done. But there are cases where it was proven. What is done now? Seems like nothing. I havent seen anything. And in my eyes this information would cause me not to bid on certain sellers auctions 0% is the only action that needs and should be done. Its about money if yall didnt know, which is why its still going on. So take away the/your money and buy else where.
<< <i>He would have to click on each auction's bid list and back-check each person who bid on that auction. Times 30,000... and that would all hinge on whether or not his customer provided a valid ebay username. >>
Or he could attempt to at least put some window dressing on the repeated allegations and personally check into the specific auctions that have been reported here, then inform the board of his findings/actions, and then let his future consignees and customers know whether or not he takes shilling/safety bidding seriously. I can only recall one instance when he addressed swirling controversy, and that was when there was speculation of a guaranteed bump service. It's Rick's business and he can run it any way he darn well pleases, but if it were me I would be vigorously defending my good name here and elsewhere and trying to make my customers feel as good as possible about their patronage.

I was referring to the selling of fake rack packs, but my opinion also includes the shill bidding. I'll stand by my original comment, the whole "it's too hard" excuse doesn't cut it. People shouldn't be sold fake product or get shilled up because it would be a PITA to the seller. Boo hoo.
If there was any doubt hotcardcollection won the card DPeck was bidding on he just received Probstein123's automatic feedback for once payment is made. So he paid for his own card.
I'm a small time collector compared to the majority of people on the board...but anytime I saw his auctions when I was completing my graded 73 set...I always steered clear. Why would I pay sometimes double the VCP value for a card. He's definitely great for the consignor...and for his own bottom line...but as a buyer with some sort of budget, I never understood the point in trying to win his typically overpriced auctions.

It may not be much but a while back because of the great detective work of this board at the last minute I decided against my first business with this consignor.
I won't say much about the other proceedings that are being mentioned as I have been much more onlooker than investor in the board over the years, but if the allegations are true, count one long time observer a bit disappointed as well.
The second card ended 5 days after the first and received a $17 safety bid 4 days into the auction when it wasn't getting any bids, it still sold for less than the first. The bidder was hotcardcollection.

Mike, I don't think you understand how this is supposed to work. You are not supposed to actually apologize. That significantly impacts the amount of fun we can have with this situation. A most common reaction would be to hide, be shunned, and then come back with a new username.
In all seriousness, perhaps a direct apology to DPeck (perhaps you have already done this through PM) or offering him the card at a pretty fair price would be in order. Shilling is a douchey move but you did it to a board member who you knew was bidding on the card.
I can only speak for myself and wish you the best going forward. I know I am not perfect and made mistakes in life too. Hang in there. While there are worse things to do in life, I can understand the ill feelings by people here. I truly appreciate the efforts of maurice, vlad, and others. I'd rather just accept your apology and move on. Lets start fresh!
And thanks for sharing your story in the SMR. I don't even begin to imagine knowing what you have been through. I knew a little bit from being a board member but not all the details.

Nice finish to the story. Everyone makes mistakes...its what you do when you're down that defines you. Most people wouldn't post that- I'm glad you did. Let's all move on...
Mike has definitely given a lot more than he has taken, especially on these boards. We have all had lapses in judgement that we regret. This board is very adept at exposing our flaws, and that is one of the chances we take by being on here. But in the grand scheme of life and what it can give to us and take from us (Mike knows this all too well), how much should we really be punished for having a lapse in judgement, especially when we have the kahunas to step right in and admit to it.
Life is about forgiveness...we all deserve that.
I am confident that Mike will make things right with dpeck.

OK, this is ridiculous. We have a guy who is caught RED-HANDED running up his own auctions on a CU member that I suspect considered him an online friend (based on threads where they are buddy-buddy). This is the same guy who had no problems blowing $10k a week busting wax while at the same time accepting $1,000 college fund gifts for his kids from CU members who could barely afford to give but did so anyway because they thought there was a guy in need. Also the same guy who spent the weeks following his beloved wife's passing living it up in Vegas with his buddies and taking golf trips while his kids were left home to grieve without their only remaining parent. Not to mention all of the subtle boasting about how successful he's been in life and how much money he makes flipping cards (which was greatly exaggerated).
This guy is a complete scumbag and I'm frankly mortified that you all are so willing to forgive this clown after he's shown time and time again how little regard he has for anybody but himself. Someone please explain to me how this is any different than when Gary Daggett was pretending to be buddy-buddy with everybody and caring about the hobby, then passing on resealed wax to board members? I'm very rarely (if ever) serious when I post anymore, but truthfully the best thing about these boards is the trust we build amongst each other. A few weeks ago I sent a $650 paypal gift for cards to a guy on BST and had no fear that he was going to take the money and run because we had a previous deal on here that went great. When someone seriously abuses that trust-- someone who has posted for years-- the foundation on which communities like this are built on is compromised. You can't just let stuff like that slide. But now you have a guy here that will smile to your face while at the same time running you up in his own auctions, and you guys have no qualms letting this slide after a half-hearted (and most likely empty) apology while getting caught with his hand in the cookie jar? Wow.
I'm amazed at how easily this guy really has you all fooled. He's managed to weasel your sympathy, your respect, your trust, and now your money. I tend to judge people based on their actions, not their words. My suggestion would be that you all do the same.

Well said Lee. I couldn't agree more. It's always amusing how so many want to have a big group hug once someone says they are sorry. If they lied and scammed in the past, what makes them all of a sudden turn into honest Abe? Because they got caught? Don't be so easily sold people. If the people on here didn't figure out what he was doing, do you think he would have come clean? The answer is HELL NO!!

In all seriousness, perhaps a direct apology to DPeck (perhaps you have already done this through PM) or offering him the card at a pretty fair price would be in order. Shilling is a douchey move but you did it to a board member who you knew was bidding on the card.
the ill feelings by people here. I truly appreciate the efforts of maurice, vlad, and others. I'd rather just accept your apology and move on. Lets start fresh!

Couldnt have said it better.
Mike is a good guy. The devil gets us all. But we can all learn from it.
<< <i>I want to offer my apology to everyone.
I made bad judgements recently on a few occasions. Obviously I won't defend my actions and am sorry that I have let many of you down. I will have to live with that and it doesn't feel good. I'm not going to justify it, or make any excuses. All I can do is work and try to slowly rebuild the trust I had with many of you.
Sincerely,
Mike Kelley >>
Nice finish to the story. Everyone makes mistakes...its what you do when you're down that defines you. Most people wouldn't post that- I'm glad you did. Let's all move on...
Life is about forgiveness...we all deserve that.
I am confident that Mike will make things right with dpeck.
Hang in there Mike....

<< <i>Mike has definitely given a lot more than he has taken, especially on these boards.

+1 A lot of people would have just vanished from the boards. I appreciate the fact he apologized and offered no excuses.

<< <i>OK, this is ridiculous.

Well only 1 out of 4 for me.
