I don't collect basketball at all anymore. Probably haven't bought more than 3 or 4 packs total since the late 90s. I don't own any Kobe or LeBron cards. I am as far from a basketball collector as you can get. So how in the heck did I end up clicking on an eBay listing that included these photos?
Believe it or not, I accidentally stumbled across this listing while looking for 1990 DONRUSS BASEBALL, OF ALL THINGS! There was another thread discussing the 1990 Donruss errors, and @ReggieCleveland (Arthur) made a comment that you can't find 1990 Donruss wax anymore. He was talking only about the early print runs, but I went down that rabbit hole looking to see if I could find some error boxes. But I found this 23 pack rack box of 1989-90 Fleer instead. I could see 1, 2, 3, 4 Larry Bird cards and a Michael Jordan on top of the racks in the second photo. Heck, I'm thinking, I don't even collect basketball, but I'll throw a bid up, because you just never know. Surely, though, the heavy duty basketball collectors will show up and blow me away with their bids. Other than one guy that flipped a couple of pesky bids out there, no one else showed up to the party, and I got the lot of 23 1989-90 Fleer rack packs for about $85 delivered. Just received it today, and not one, not two, not 3, not 4, not 5, not 6, but 7 packs had Larry Bird on the front. I don't know if the wrapper was damaged previous to shipping, or if somehow it ripped in transit, but since I felt like opening a pack, I did so before taking a photo. The middle cell contained the Jordan pictured.
Clearly, these packs have been cherry picked from multiple boxes. Besides the pack with Bird and Jordan on the front, I also netted these Jordans
There are a few packs with a bunch of nobodies on the fronts and backs of all the cells, but I'm gonna bet that whoever originally put this Frankenstein box together knew the sequencing, and they likely contain Jordan or Bird inside. I'm gonna rip one pack with a Jordan sticker, and probably a couple of those nobody packs, but the rest are going on the shelf... for now. Even though basketball is not my forte, this was certainly a fun acquisition. You never know when you're going to stumble across a deal.

Thanks! It's funny how some random comment will send me down a rabbit hole sometimes, and before I know it, it's a couple hours later, and I'm like, how the heck did I end up here? Haha!
FYI, I did open an additional 3 rack packs based on the "nobodies" from the Jordan sequence that were showing, and hit 3 for 3 on pulling a Jordan, always from the center cell. Then opened one with a Jordan sticker showing (for my PC), and discovered Danny Manning RC, and second year Miller, Pippen, and Rodman are sequenced within about 7 cards of each other. Based on the rest of the cards in the sequence, I can see some of these additional packs were cherry picked because of that.
There are some additional packs with nobodies that don't correspond to any of my limited sequencing knowledge, so I'm going to assume...Magic? Doubt I rip any more just to find out, though.
Opened 5 total rack packs from that lot, and pulled these 5 Jordans. Nothing really outstanding, as they as have flaws, with the top left one probably being the best. It was fun, though. Done ripping, for now.
@DM23HOF - I keep looking at the 57' Auto Mantle and it is pretty awesome. I would for sure get that re-holdered into the latest and greatest PSA holder. Sweet Card!!

Thanks; congrats again on the Stan 10.
Speaking of old holders, this one will get some fresh plastic eventually. Any fellow Mantle guys can appreciate how tough it is to find a 63 centered like this...
Great stuff as usual, guys. I dig the '69 Mets banner and of course the '52 Topps Mantle. This Aaron Stand Up is actually an April acquisition but I'm just getting around to showing it now. A nice sharp card from a condition-sensitive issue - really nice for a 6.
These two modern beauties a from @Counselor right here on CU (thanks again, they're great and I mailed mine today). I don't have a lot of 'shiny' Yankees stuff but these caught my eye, seemed like a good place to start and needless to say I am starting to understand the appeal more and more:

Curious about the rare, mysterious and beautiful 1951 Wheaties Premium Photos?
The Aaron, Kershaws, Stanton, Harper and Trout are from my renewal special. A nice 52 to continue my excruciating slow journey on the set and some other guys you may have heard of.
Anybody else taking advantage of the 10 percent ebay bucks? It's good until midnight tomorrow (May 11th). I picked up this 1962 Bart Starr card and collected some bucks.
Son of a horse knuckle! I had stopped getting the discounts fro ebay so I switched my eBay email. Well, somehow, they unchecked that I receive buying discounts in my comm preferences. So that's why I've been missing out on all these eBay bucks and coupons. Hershey squirts!
Don Kessinger and Glenn Beckert were the one/two hitters for the Cubs for many years. I picked up their cards from 1973. Looks like Glenn Beckert is telling the home plate umpire about his great savings on GEICO. Also picked up Jose Cardenal. He was a nice spark for the Cubs back then, He was the only Cub player in 1973 to hit at least 300. (he hit 303)
At this pace...I will have my 60s run knocked out in a few days. A big thx to Anthony Griffins for the heads up how difficult that the 61 pack is...so I moved on this one. It does have a tear along the bottom...but I can live with that.
Great items this month! Really impressive pieces. I love seeing the diversity of what folks collect.
I needed one last item to complete my 1969 Topps football series 1 raw set and it was a tough one, the Piccolo rookie. I didn't want one that was altered or that i'd be unhappy with when I got it in hand, so I decided to wait for a nice graded item to crack out for the set (which I store in Card Saver 1's inside a PSA perfect fit sleeve in a 4 pocket ultra pro platinum page inside an Archival Methods D-ring binder with slip cover). I was fortunate to get this one:

@BPorter26 That's an outstanding Dr. J. Bare minimum black in the top left quad, no barnacle beneath his elbow, no fisheyes in the red team name, great centering, sharp, clean edges, just masterful. Virtually none of the issues that plague that card. COngrats on an awesome pickup!
@Tomi I have always loved that Ripken and all of the hobby legend that goes with it. It's very underrated and I feel like I haven't seen one in a while. Glad someone is showing one off, and a beauty at that!
Tim, I am a sucker for those '36 Goudey Premiums. Such a nice looking set that seems to get no love. That Dickey is right in your wheelhouse, congrats!
I was disappointed in the misspelling of Ashburn too. I did not notice when I purchased...but I am hopeful PSA will correct and place in the most modern slab.
Wow, some really great stuff posted for this month. Here are my two additions. Something modern, but different.
For those that don't know or are not familiar with these cards they were inserted in packs of Nolan Ryan Pacific cards from 1992 that were repacked and distributed in 1993. That is why they are dated 1993. The cards are numbered from 111-220. I don't think anyone knows the odds of pulling one of these Ghostwriting cards as it is very inconsistent from box to box. I've opened up 7 sealed boxes and pulled none and I know someone who pulled 3 or 4 from one box. I also know someone that pulled nothing from a full sealed case, that has 20 boxes in it.
There are 10 anti-drug/alcohol messages that seem to be directed towards keeping kids in school and keeping them away from substance abuse. These messages glow in the dark after being held under a bright light or they can be seen with a black light. A scanner does not pick up the message, so that is why I photographed the back using a black light. You can see the message in hand by tilting it in the light, but it's difficult to see straight on. You can also feel the glow in the dark material on the back of the card with your fingers. Below are the 10 messages.

Donato, I've never seen those before. Was it common knowledge when they came out that the ghost writing was there or was this a hobby secret for a while? Also, are there versions of those cards without the ghost writing? I'm fascinated by these, very interesting.
For the last decade I have quietly drooled over the '59 Morrell Meats Sandy Koufax. It is hands down my favorite Koufax card. I love the full-bleed color photo. I can't think of too many full-bleed cards from the 50s. Anyway, I took the cheap way out and picked up this '59 Dodgers Post Card which uses the same image but is larger. I'm cheating but a midgrade '59 Morrell would run me $4-5k so I like to think of it as being strategic. Anyway, I assumed by the 3 grade that it would be beat up a bit but I was pleasantly surprised to receive a NM-MT card that has a few surface bubbles. I've lusted after the Morrell for a long time and this will satiate me for a while... hopefully.
