Check out my recent purchase of a 1950, 1951, and 1952 proof sets in a old single holder

UtahCoinUtahCoin Posts: 5,366 ✭✭✭✭✭

I just finished shooting the obverse, tomorrow (or the next day or so) I'll shoot the reverse. Just thought I share as they're pretty darn nice.

I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.

Those are beautiful! That 1950 Franklin looks like it has a pretty nice CAM Obverse. How's the reverse look?

    Nice pick up.

What is the back story of the coins? Was the prior owner a collector who assembled the proof sets coin by coin?

    Excellent and congrats.

I must have a touch of OCD because I want to slightly rotate those Franklins to match the rest, lol.

Very nice! Is the holder a mint product or after market?

I'm sure it would be aftermarket. Vintage, about as old as the coins I would guess. Metal screws and brittle plastic.

Very nice sets and I love these holders. Have a few stuck back in the old safe myself but nothing as nice as those in them.

Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

Nice. Is that a single exposure? Are all the halves from rotated dies?

It's odd that there is a Proof set holder tag with the sets that was not issued until 1955.

The 1950 half might be really nice if the reverse has an equal cameo.

Wow, I wonder if the original owner purchased a ton of sets to assemble these, bought them over time or got lucky with a few. Either way a beautiful set.. ebay?

Multiple exposures taken with a Canon 100mm macro lens. The holder itself is a photo merge of 4 images. The coins are then imaged separately and merged with the others. Before resizing and merging layers, each file size is somewhere around 200 MB. This explains why it takes me all day to list 1 or 2 auctions. :)

I guess your copy stand is too short so you can't get enough distance to take just 1 shot of the whole holder? If you got a shorter lens like a 55mm Nikon you should be able to frame the whole set in 1 shot.

It’s not the ability to frame the whole image - it’s the quality of light that is negatively impacted from trying to photograph such a large item. I’ve used the same technique of photographing individual coins and merging them with the holder because it gives superior results. Of course it is 10x more labor intensive but...

Ahh, makes sense. For sure you can't get good lighting on the individual coins when shot as a whole.

The 51 and 52 quarters would look soooo good in my Proof Washington registry set!

    Thanks for the photo information.

The difficulty with making a single exposure is that individual coin image quality varies with the angle of the coins in the holder, as well as the angles between each coin and the lights.

The OP's solution is time-intensive but results in a superior composite that is true to a viewer's impression. Nicely done. :)

Is the 52 quarter a super bird ?

No Superbird. But that's okay, the 1952 Jefferson FS-404 is much more interesting to me.
