mark the time, 6:04 left in the third quarter and Philly is done. it wouldn't surprise me to see them lose by 20+. congrats to the Boston Celtics.

    going to bed.

I think you left too soon....Philly up by 2 with 8 min. left. Boston can for sure still win, but it's not a done deal.

That was keets calling the game over with 18 minutes left in the game then if Boston ends up losing he would be able to rip them all day tomorrow. Not every team gives up at halftime in an elimination game like Toronto does. ;)

Sure looked like Embiid was fouled...several times. But that is playoff Basketball.

On the last flurry where the ball went off his knees , Bynes played great D. He went straight up. Embiid has to make that shot.

I'm glad it's over since it would have taken all 7 games for Philly to win. Plus I think Boston has the best chance to beat the Cavs out of the 2 teams. Now Boston gets almost as much time to rest as Cleveland. I should be a great series. :)

All of these coaches got more Coach of the Year votes than Brad Stevens:
    Philadelphia's Brett Brown
    Indiana's Nate McMillan
    San Antonio's Gregg Popovich
    LA Clippers' Doc Rivers
    Utah's Quin Snyder
    Portland's Terry Stotts.
and winner COY winner Toronto's Dwayne Casey

They'll all be sitting at home watching Brad coach in the Eastern Conference Finals.

What I find amazing is that he has reached the conference finals the past two seasons with two completely different teams. Only 4 players for last years team. Only 2 of the top 7 scorers from last years team. Reaching the conference finals this year with his two best players injured. Amazing

    Players react

He's got his work cutout for him in this next series. I can see them sticking with the same gameplan they used on Redick for Korver then stick Horford on Love. Try double & triple teaming Lebron if necessary and hope they can rotate to the open shooter when Lebron finds them.
I've been looking forward to this matchup and hopefully Boston makes it a series.

With Home Court advantage, the better coach, the Cavs changing their roster and starters repeatedly trying to find the right rotation. How can the Celtics not be favored.

If I recall correctly last night was the only game of the series where Boston was favored. I doubt they go into this next series as the favorite after Cleveland just swept the #1 seed.

Just saw that the nba moved up the start of the series to sunday instead of tuesday which is cool not having a longer wait. Just before game two is the NBA draft lottery and Cleveland & Boston both have something to look forward to in it. The Cavs own the Nets pick from the Kyrie trade and the Celtics will receive the Lakers pick if it lands on the 2nd or 3rd pick, any other pick then it belongs to the 76ers. CLE,BOS & PHI are the only 3 playoff teams with any stakes in this lottery.

I thought that Phillly got the Lakers pick this year if it falls at #1 or 6 or worse. Boston getting it if it falls 2 though 5.

If Cleveland can somehow hit lottery magic and get a top 4 pick maybe it could help entice Lebron to stay

Yup that is the case with that Lakers pick but it has no chance of landing #4 or #5 at this point. LA finished with the 10th worst record in the nba and the only chance that that pick could of landed 4th or 5th was if they finished with one of the top two worst records then got pushed out of the top three by three other teams landing ahead of them in the lottery. Odds are Philly will be end up using that pick ad Boston ends up with the Kings 1st rounder next year that the 76ers own.

Cleveland's pick will either land in the top three if their lottery combo lands there or somewhere in picks 8-11 depending on who ends up in the top three. its kind of the same scenario as the Lakers above, the Nets finished with the 8th worst record overall and the only way they could land at #4 was if Brooklyn had the worst record overall and got pushed out of the top 3 by three lottery teams ending up ahead of them. The Cavs should still be able to get a really good player wherever they land.

Who on the forums would find another Cleveland v Golden State finals (#4 in a row) boring or compelling?

Who would want to see a Boston v. Houston finals?

Or a Cleveland v Houston finals?

Or a Boston v Golden State finals?

  • JustacommemanJustacommeman Posts: 22,852 ✭✭✭✭✭

I wouldn’t find it boring just not as interesting as the others. I’m just a casual fan of the NBA these days. I can however say this is the most playoff basketball I’ve watched in years. I think it’s mostly because the NHL playoffs have been lacking so far. Looking forward to the NHL conference finals after tonight’s game 7 semis

Kevin, you seem to be talking about "Dynasty" which is where Golden State is poised.

just from thinking about my own life of watching all Sports I think fans overall don't like a Sports Dynasty. if we happen to be a fan of the particular Team we absolutely love them. as a Team starts its run toward Dynasty I think the overall fan-base of a particular Sport enjoys what's happening and is intrigued by it. there seems to be some time limit of when the latter group starts to get bored, maybe 2-3 years. after that they tend to either lose interest in what they view as the eventual outcome and some/many even turn against the Dynasty and root for its end.

this kind of thinking seems to me to be at the heart of why a lot of fans tend to dislike certain Teams. I think it feeds into some of the "hate" towards a player like Lebron James or Tom Brady. they are great in their Sport but unless they play for our Team we get tired of seeing/hearing about them. some of it is generational and feeds into rivalries, it has a lot to do with why MLB fans tend to hate the Yankees.

it also strikes me that after awhile of being removed from a Team or player who absolutely dominates their Sport that many who hated come around to admire a Team or player. Michael Jordan comes to mind. he killed so many hopes during his career that many fans detested him, but we all regard him very positively today.

in a nutshell, I think we like the notion of a Sports Dynasty until it lasts too long, maybe 3-4 years. then we start to root for the underdog. let's be honest; who isn't tired of seeing the Patriots in the Super Bowl every year or the Crimson Tide going for the NCAA title every year?? certainly not their core fan-base, but everyone else hopes for them to lose if only secretly.

    Keets.

Good points in your most recent reply. I think that people do get tired of continued success by a sports franchise or a star athlete. Unless you are a die hard fan of a team or player, continued success of the team or player loses its shine or appeal to a fan. At times it can even turn a fan into a non fan.

Perhaps this phenomena stems from a desire to have/see something new (for example a new car or a new girlfriend/boyfriend).

As to the Warriors and my view of that team, it has changed. I moved to the SF Bay Area over 30 years ago and have been a fan of the team over the years. Until recently (when Mark Jackson was hired 6 or 7 years ago) the team had experience mostly losing seasons since its 1975 title (except for the 2007-2008 We Believe team and the Run TMC teams during the late 80's and early 90's).

When the team made the playoffs in 2013-2014 (losing to the Clippers in round 1 in a good series) and began its ascent, I enjoyed following the team and its success through last year's title. This year, not so much. The team is playing well at this time and it may well win another title. My enthusiasm for the team has dropped off. It may be due to the general vibe in the area that titles are now to be expected.

Good points by both Keets and SanctionII. I remember when the Cowboys were hated because the always did well.

Now some of those haters love them because they stink!! :o Steve loves Jerry Jones because he believes he is the cause of their bad streak. But at the same time Jerry did put together a team that won the SB 3 out of 4 years when he first bought them. He probably could have won MORE if he had left Jimmy Johnson alone! When Johnson left and we went through the coach of the month club is when our current streak started. Now he has a YES man coach in Garrett so who knows when this streak will end. I know all the haters hope it never ends, but I will always be pulling for them. :/B)

Just for fun. I'll throw out a guess for the Cavs/Celts series. Celts win first game. Cavs win 2nd/3rd games. Cavs in 6. Although it would not bother me to see new blood (Celts) in the Finals.

Two days after winning Coach of the Year, Raptors coach Dwayne Casey gets canned

both were probably the right choice.

there will be discussion and argument about who should have beaten out Casey for Coach of the Year but there shouldn't be anyone saying he didn't deserve it. his Team performed well all season and that body of work is what the choice is made from.

as for his being fired, that is a management decision and it is the typical one made instead of a total rebuild of the playing personnel. I think the Raptors are a good Team and will continue to be good. if we totaled up all the Teams in all the Sports who get just so far and fail we'd have a long list. perhaps leading it would be the Buffalo Bills with HC Marv Levy. they had a good Coach and good personnel but just couldn't reach the pinnacle in the NFL.

it happens regularly and the HC usually gets the blame.

Me too but have you seen how the NBA scheduled this round? For BOS-CLE games 1&2 are sunday then tuesday, then you have game 3 four days later on next saturday. Same set-up with GS-HOU having four days between game 2 & 3. Last year the Celtics & Cavs played every game of the series two days after the previous game.
It just seems really odd to have that much time off between games.

I have no clue as to why the games in the two conference finals series are so spread out. Like the same thing with the Finals.

Maybe the reason is that the NBA wants to keep itself at the forefront of the sports media through all of the spring. With Game 7 of the finals being scheduled for mid June (June 17 I think); and with the NBA draft being set for around June 26 pro basketball has most of April (the first fews days of April belongs to the NCAA basketball title weekend and the first week of the new MLB season) through mid June where the NBA playoffs take center stage.

The NBA starts is summer league play around July 4 and that continues into August. NBA players go around the world on league sponsored activities during the summer months to promote pro hoops overseas. Then in late September training camps open for the new season, with regular season games now beginning in mid October instead of the beginning of November.

I think the NBA desires to have pro hoops become a year round activity on which global sports fans can focus.

@SanctionII that could definitely play a part in it. Another thing that might back up your theory is round 2 of the playoffs had one 4-0 sweep and three 4-1 finishes will all four series probably ending sooner than the league would have liked. From a fan standpoint is just stinks we'll have a longer wait than usual next week.

Game 1 is a must-win for Houston, imo. if they fail to hold serve right off the bat, it'll be a psychological dagger through the heart that they'll be unable to recover from.

James Harden is going to have to play like the league's MVP the entire series for them to have a chance, and that's going to be a tall task with Klay Thompson doing everything in his power to make his life a living hell

This defense is so much better than many people give them credit for. Held the Cavs starters to 46 total points including Lebron's 15 which was 19 points under his playoff average.

    wow........................that was ridiculous.

first off, the Cavs aren't that bad and the Celtics aren't that good. I hope no one thinks I'm making excuses but how can a Team come out that cold in the first game of a Conference semi-final?? at one point in the second quarter the Cavs were shooting about 20% and couldn't buy a bucket, it was crazy. sure, there were some tough shots that the Celtics defense forced but there were plenty of clean looks and shots off of picks that these guys routinely make. the one that really convinced me it wasn't going to change was a little lay-up by Tristan Thompson; the ball circles the rim, seems to be more than halfway down and suddenly catches the rim and pops out!!! it was that kind of night.

Cleveland made a run to end the third quarter and close to 14, but Boston came out in the 4th with a quick seven points and it was over. the Cavs shot.360 overall and an abysmal .154 from the arc..........................are you kidding me!!!???!!! that's 4-26 and most were clean looks that they just couldn't make.

hats off to the Celtics, they are still unbeaten at home in the playoffs.

The thing that stood out to me was the Celtics have more talent at every position except for Lebron. They are younger, stronger and faster. The Cavs looked old. Of course Lebron is Lebron and I’m sure they will bounce back and play better. He’s the King.

Its no coincidence that Philly came out that cold in the first game of a Conference quarter-finals. Everyone wanted to downplay Boston's defense in that series and before you knew it Philly was on the ropes. Lebron's Cavs can't afford to go down 0-2 in this series, not with the Celtics attacking on both ends of the court the way they are.

Yup it was just one game but it was arguably the most important one. Last three Cavs playoff games in Boston the Cavs won by 13,44 & 33. The last regular season Cavs game in Boston they won by 22. This win was huge for Boston's confidence going forward.

only caught bits and pieces of the game due to golf, but the one prevailing thought i had while watching hoops was, if i'm a Celtics fan, it would be very difficult for me not to play the "what if" game with the way they are balling right now. i just can't get over the fact that they are doing all of this without Irving & Hayward. Milwaukee......Philly......LeBron & Co......Houston......Golden St.......NBA's 50 greatest players........i wouldn't fear anyone at this point. idk what Stevens is getting paid, but the man deserves a big fat raise as far as i'm concerned
