Saturday Night Rip: 1985 Topps Hockey ** 9/23 Update**
One set I’ve been building is 1985 Topps. I’m gunning for all 10s but obviously that most likely won’t happen. I currently have 1/3 in 10 and 1/4in 9s. I have self subbed about 90% having picked up some 10s for the price of grading from 4SC.
I’ve kind of stalled on it as of late. I purchased a few raw sets off eBay to pick through and they were very worth while. I have zero doubt that I could finish the set in 9s but where would the fun in that be. I attended the Expo in Toronto last weekend and was very impressed with it as a whole but it was not very helpful for most of my collecting needs.
Enter the rip.
I was planning on displaying it with my set but decided that I’d rather rip it and use it to try and complete the set. I will re wrap the box for display and if any cards are graded mark them as having come from the box.
So after movie night with the kids and watching the Sabres game I will pour a little Scotch and rip away. I may only get through half tonight depending on time but the rest will get ripped tomorrow night. I have a sub to send in this week.
Fingers crossed for some winners!
Kevin

Alright no turning back now.....
Cool packs on these
I’m going to go through first and find the best looking one and try and dime a pack from the box.
This one is clearly OC so let’s start here.
Ok. First one down. Nice Gretzky sticker right of the bat. At least 60/40 with a bit of tilt.
*****( EDIT: From here on out for all packs the bottom Rows will be reserved for cards that are 60/40 or better. They will all appear mint or better from arms length. ).*********
Here is pack 1. Bottoms are 60/40 or better with no visible issues from arm length. Condition of all of them are great with no major surprises.
Time for dinner and Sabres game.

Is the Gretzky Box Bottom left corner saved if you hand cut? It's hard to tell maybe until you peel the plastic off, but even a 9 is like $500.
Yeah that box bottom is a shame. The Gretz is perfect surface shape which is usually the hardest part but the box corner is dinged so a 6 at best IMO.
Pack 2. Much worse than pack 1. Only 2 arm length possibilities. On to pack 3.

Also sorry for the poor photos. If I hit a Mario I’ll scan if not not till tomorrow.

This is awesome good luck.
Pack 3 Crap out:
Here’s the beverage of choice tonight.
Any scotch drinkers? This is only the second bottle I’ve ever bought. First was last weekend. Mainly a bourbon guy but I’m branching out. Any suggestions?

Pack 4: Bounce back. No big names but good condition.
Kevin
Pack 5: Solid quality again. No big names but a Sabres Sticker!
Kevin
Pack 6: The Roller Coaster continues.
Kevin
Pack 7: Trending down continues.
Kevin
Pack 8: Begining of a rebound or a tease?
Kevin
Pack 9: Skunked.
Kevin
Whoooooo!
Pack 10: Sabres Sticker! (Have to look for the bright side sometimes.
Kevin
Pack 11: Did I peak to soon? Perfect Housley & Tony McKegney (former Sabre) and a host of others including a Leafs Sticker.
Also time to leave the single malts and move over to blended.
Peat Monster is ..... well ..... Peaty!
Kevin
Pack 12: A few HOFers but unfortunately not in the right row.
Kevin
Let's go Kevin, I want to see at least two Lemeiux's.
Great picks on the scotch. Carry on.
Pack 13: BOX HIT(S) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So pack thirteen begins. A Dwight Foster. Nice shape. But not nice enough. All the way till. Mark Fusco. Fusc who? Mark Fusco.
Then my eye is drawn to a really odd card. It’s a Mark Johnson. He was traded from the Whalers to the Blues. His whole card is a trip in 80’s airbrushing of photos. From the nameplate to the number to the neckline. AWSOME! I’ll scan it in later so you can appreciate it in all it’s glory!
But wait!
What’s that behind it? Holy shjt! It’s a GILBERT PERREAULT!!!!!! And it’s a beaut!
Holy cow! This rip is already fantastic! I nailed a Perreault that has a shot! For whatever reason this card has eluded me! BOOM. NIGHT MADE.
But wait. What’s that? No Flippin way!!!! Kaboom!
Super Mario
Kaboom!
Wayne Gretzky!
And then... Denis Savard. Nice card but tough last three cards to beat!
Kevin
Scan!
Kevin
All 3 would be generous 10s but locks for 9.
Kevin
Yeah I’m an idiot. Can’t call it a night when I’m on top.
Pack 14#.
Kevin
Awesome run out in that last one!
Alright.
Pack 15: Good night Irene. Nothing to see here. Carry on.
That’s it for the evening. I’ll finish it tomorrow night.
Wow is all I can say! What a blast. Can’t wait to finish it. That one pack was insane. Any of you guys who track pack collation know if that is the natural order? Because if not what a special pack!
Kevin
Kevin
Awesome rip! I've pulled Mario &Wayne also from packs. I've even gone as far as spotting an OPC pack with Wayne showing hoping for the hit, but no go on the OPC sequence. Congrats on the hits so far and I hope you grade out high for your set. Crack open a bottle of Oban and finish it off!!
Great thread!
Man we have a lot in common. Sushi, booze and cards! Perfect combo.
Good luck on the rest of the box!
Kevin,
Nice job on the box break. You got yourself a few great hits.
Good luck with the rest of the box.

Join the club. My wife came home while I was opening and saw the pile of gum and laughed when I told her it was 32 years old. And yes in case anyone is wondering I did give it a try. Turned to small hard pieces which then proceeded to dissolve in my mouth !
I will have to keep an eye out for Oban.
Yeah, that's a tough combo to beat. I could eat Sushi everyday. Hey everyone has vices. I embrace mine.
I will rip the rest tonight but in the meantime here is a close up of the Mario. I measured it 47/53 L/R and 59/41 T/B.
Kevin
Alright let’s keep this thing rolling. Well this is interesting?
The last time Savard was in a pack guess what!!!!!!!
Ugh ohh. Mike was the first card. He wasn’t in the last big pack.
Simmer up next. Also not in the last big pack.
Oh well this isn’t looking promising. All NOT in the Mario pack! Argh..........
Kevin
But wait....... what’s this.......
Kevin
Mario!!!!!!!!!!!!!
50/50 L/R 47/53 T/B
Kevin
Oh and by the way post number 600!
Kevin
Pack 17:
It can’t be Nashville every night.
Switched to some black matting. Hopefully the photos will look better tonight.
Kevin
Pack 18: Sabres Sticker.
Kevin
Pack 19: Nada........
Except......
Double Gum!!!!!!!
Kevin
Pack 20:
Kevin
Wow. You may have found the sequence somewhere yourself.
Nice job man. I didn't expect two in the box myself.
Pack 21:
Kevin
Pack 22: Not much.
Except....... some sick flow on Brian Propp!
Kevin
I didn’t expect two either.
And most certainly didn’t expect the quality of them to be what they are. So cool. If that second can nail a dime I’d sell my other and that would become the centerpiece of this set for certain. Fingers crossed.
Kevin

Last pack for the night. I know I said I’d finish but I’m just looking to veg and watch TWD. Kind of feel like this box has peaked.
If any of you out there have suggestions for subbing packs I’m all ears. I’ve kept the best for last and really would love to self sub a 10 pack from this box.
Also if any of you have techniques for revealing who is on back or front I’d love to hear about it. I thought I remember something about a super intense black light. If I could figure out who was on back or front I’d really like to try for the subbed pack.
Kevin
Pack: 23
Kevin
Absolutely AWESOME! Been looking at this as one of my next sets to complete and I think you've inspired me!
great stuff congrats!!
collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.
looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started
Nice job on the Mario's!!
Also - the Mark Johnson is cool. He played for the Wisconsin Badgers and also the Miracle on Ice team. Got to see him play a couple times as a Badger when I was a kid.
Must be the expectations of Canadian childhood growing up ripping OPC packs
You should expect to get 2 to 3 per box, not just 1 (remember, you're getting 432 cards per box on a 165-card set, and, I have to go back and check to confirm, but if my memory is right, which it might not be, I think 1985 Topps may have had fewer double-print cards than some of their other '80's sets). With Topps always being so much smaller of a set than OPC, plus having more cards per pack than OPC, Topps boxes yield higher quantity of stars. That is always the balance between the two brands though, with OPC being tougher condition and harder to pull, so value higher but chance of getting the cards you want being more difficult too.
Congrats on the good results! This is a really fun thread to see.
Same experience here when I opened a box back in the day, they are always in the same pack.
In my box I got 4 of each, Wayne and Mario, subbed 2 of each, all got 9's
Congrats and Good Luck on the rest.
