If this was the first we had heard of this problem I would agree with you, however it's been over a year and it doesn't seem like this dispute will be resolved anytime soon.
I've been self-employed since 1982 (at the naive age of 23) and I've had at least 5 to 10 times where someone has owed me money in somewhat similar circumstances than this (not consignment though) which took place between 1982 to 1995.
In every case, I never was paid back.
I look back at it as just paying for an education in the business world.
It took me awhile to learn about human nature and the evils that 'quick money' can do to some people.
Gone are the days that I would blindly trust people with my goods/money.
I now look out for number #1, but I still try very hard to maintain a courteous, professional and ethical business approach.

I have yet to look at the message board ATS, but I hope that the collectors over there are well aware of the way Shane has chosen to deal with what is going on. I am also keeping an eye to see if this thread can hit 10k views. The more people who know and can tell or refer a friend to this thread, the better off we will all be.

I was burned by a guy several years ago. I gave him a bunch of parts to be rebuilt, as that was his business. He never rebuilt or returned them. Some belonged to customers, and I had to make it up out of my own inventory.
I wound up writing it off my taxes as a business loss, and then sent a nice little letter to the IRS about the "income" he received from not paying me for his parts.
Apparently, he was audited, as he vented in another forum about the IRS hitting him for big money. ,

So very true Cakes! I learned this lesson at around 21 years old and it was painful at the time, but has saved me from much worse, of that I am very sure; throughout the last 50 years.

Reminds me of that scene from 'A Bronx Tale', when C is chasing this guy over 20 bucks that he owes him.
Sonny asks: "Do you even like him?" and C says "No". Then Sonny says: "It costs you 20 dollars to get rid of him. He's never gonna bother you again. He's never gonna ask you for money again. He's out of your life for 20 dollars." LOL

I haven't done business with Shane recently, but I did purchase some very nice coins from him without any trouble a few years ago. Here's one of them, an 1883-cc Morgan in a PCGS MS65 holder:
Past performance is no indication of future transactions. Lots of forum members got gold bullion from Haynes Tulving over a decade. Numerous laudatory posts. Until the day he stopped sending out coins. Then bankruptcy and court proceedings.

Its unsecured debt. I have never been a consignor of coins except occasionally thru Teletrade when it was in operation but take tables at shows and operate online store.
I have model trains on consignment (HO) at a MRR Shop (first class MRR hobby shop) to downsize collection and get payments quarterly after calling if any sales. Stuff I don't want to fool with or have time to list in my ebay store like unbuilt kits, engines that won't run or have problems like missing handrails, etc. - they take anything. If the shop folds well.......
If I had customer's coins on consignment travelling around coins shows with all types of risk, I would be very nervous with the liabilities. Not good. A major dealer who was robbed leaving a show had hundreds of thousands in consignments; fortunately there was full or nearly full recovery. A rough situation to be in.
Since this is jumping the shark a bit and I would not instigate a post on this exclusively . .
I have consigned with one of our members here . . . Illini420, and have had a multi-year positive relationship with him that has been nothing but positive and super. Professional, direct, clear, and totally worth the price . . . and (much) more. I have sympathy for those who may have dealt with others here who may have been less than forthright.
There are plenty of good members on our Boards . . . some willing to spend time and effort to help others market their items and give time and effort far in excess of what they are worth.
Illini420 is one of those. I encourage you to consider him if you are marketing a few things . . . such as I. Others are good as well . .
I think getting ripped off is everyone's fear and some of you can relate to this. Think about losing thousands over a deal that went bad. Coins weren't returned or end up lost or worse, stolen. A bad check or someone going back on their word. A bold face liar who pretends to be your friend, worse kind. There are a number of reasons one could go south and it could have got out of control or his control. I had to wait 4 years for a refund once but I never gave up. Whining, labeling someone when one only knows the half of it is, well.........hmmm.
The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

The risk goes down considerably for the dealer if you practice some basic security and have adequate insurance over your inventory and customer coins.
I was just thinking about him yesterday... wondering and hoping he could get back to the way he used to be...he was a great asset for selling hard to shoot toners back when he was legit. Very sad

That he was. I still have a god amount of stuff I'd like to send to him but I will not do so until he becomes that guy again. I had lots of good dealings with him a number of years ago.
I was one of the lucky ones who got the money owed to me after a couple of months of delays and excuses.
All he would have to do would be to lay all his cards on the table with evidence, asking for mercy and promising to pay back to the best of his ability. When debtors go silent it just fosters anger and fury and deservedly so.

Not sticking up for Shane, nor what he has done, at all, but I really doubt if that is "all he would have to do". Seriously. Not with some of the folks here and that have posted.
There is plenty he SHOULD have done. There is plenty he should STILL do. But you can bet that some of the keyboard cowboys would never be appeased.
Since I stopped myself from sending stuff to him...kind of like sixth sense or something, during what was later noted as a prime time to be ripped off in this....I don't have a dog in this fight....to me, the only ones who should have something to be said, and accepted of that, are the ones who did get ripped off or went through the stuff.
Others can be indignant, but don't have that dog in the fight.

Well, this is the best wisdom to share with YN's...
He's hiding under a rock is my guess. I think it's a good place for him.
That's typical .900 silver PCI slab toning. Its quite unique in appearance. On .999 silver it can impart spectacular deep pastel colors.
