A regular order posted today from 9/2. (18 business days) I will discuss the grades after a couple more orders post. Let's hope they are not like this one!

Update. So I received my order today. Last week they told me it went out and online I didn't see any correction so I assumed that they just sent my coins back after my request. To my surprise, they did reholder the coin and what I saw was nothing short of amazing. They screwed up AGAIN!! The very reason I sent it back for the reholder was not fixed!! It's still a proof coin graded as MS. I am completely floored and speechless.

Can't knock that fact they are consistent.

None of my coins I asked to be reholdered reverse side up were done in my last submission either

They are consistent indeed. Consistently bad. PROFESSIONAL coin grading service. Perhaps they should reconsider their name.

This happened to me several years ago, The coin was misidentified on the holder. I sent the coin back to correct the mechanical error. The problem seems to be in the order entry. They use the coin number on the holder rather than looking it up. Customer Service was very nice about it. They suggested that I bring the coin to a show and they would fix it and refund my postage. The problem is I am on the east coast and there are not a lot of shows that PCGS attends. Just sold the coins as PCGS error coins as they weren't expensive coins.

Yes as Casman than jglightbrigade and now ca5man He is not even a collector just a flipper. But than again it sounds like DB is not a collector either. This place is filled with non collectors anymore and more Alt's than you could image.

I as a collector am not worried about the time it takes them. I am more worried that the Quality of the service is going down. We have all experienced wrong labels and everytime our host has fixed mine. Last time I even got two free vouchers for all my trouble.

Now 6 of my economy were logged in on 8/1 and I had noticed last week someone said they graded over 14000 coins and I was just praying none were mine. Alas my 6 grades popped that afternoon and as a Specialist in ONE Series I was truly surprised by the grades. Not in 7 years have I experience such poor grades.

I now have those 6 back in hand and 3 will get cracked and sent back. There are so many other things in Life to Be worried about, this is not one of those. Relax folks this is a Hobby for most of us.

Lustrous coins are tough in pictures.....

But there might be an issue inside the rim on the right-obverse? Almost looks rubbed, or scuffed by a machine?

Can't tell what's going on in the left-obverse either. Appears a little spotty. While it's well struck, those "visual" issues could have knocked it down a bit....

    But....could just be the pictures.

18,000 coins graded yesterday after 17,000 the previous day. Puts them over 600,000 for the quarter. Last 2 days of grading is as many coins as they graded in a week at some points this quarter and was the #1 and #2 coin grading days for the quarter.

I know Wabbit hates it so I'll purposely say it again, Skate to where the puck will be, not where it is.

The December quarter has historically been their slowest quarter. If you have coins, now would be the time to submit. Expect a price increase to be announced in November to take affect in January. That will cause a slew of coins to be submitted in December.

They have raised prices every other year now. Didn't raise them this year so ...

That's how I see it playing out. No one likes an increase, everyone will grumble, then they get used to it

Actually if you think about it, there was a "cut" this year as CoinFacts is now free. The $500K/yr in revenue they lost by doing that has to be made up somehow

I had one of my economy submissions pop with grades today, definitely conservative, not giving anything away that's for sure. I was talking with a larger local dealer who spoke with Rick M. and asked about the delays at his old company, who said that NGC is getting the same level of submissions so why is one slow and the other fast? If they are getting record numbers of submissions why should they change their business practices?

One company is public, everything is out in the open, another company is not. There is no way to know anything about NGC other than rumor, innuendo, and guesswork. If they are doing so great, why aren't they public and seeing their stock skyrocket? Why don't they have a daily statistics page like PCGS?

Just an FYI - PCGs has 70% of the Vintage market. It takes more time to grade a Vintage coin than a Modern coin.

I totally agree that transparency would be desirable for all concerned but perhaps you could give reasons why the competitor does not offer everything that PCGS does? I am a total novice in that area.

How does the money get distributed at NGC vs. PCGS? Do the tax rates in CA VS. FL affect how the businesses are run? What is your estimate of their respective shares of the marketplace for certified collectibles?

  • DollarAfterDollarDollarAfterDollar Posts: 3,214 ✭✭✭✭✭
And yet another week goes by with no results.

By the way, what's the advantage of being a "transparent" publicly traded company when you have an issue like this delay and no one has the guts to explain?

Two months ago we had one post promising things would improve. Crickets since and the delays grew longer.

It takes time and money to set up something like a statistics page. Probably more time and money than you think.

NGC has private owners and the money gets distributed to them. They can decide to keep the money for themselves or reinvest in the business. The only tax rate difference is there is no Florida income tax giving NGC a 5% advantage. Cost of living is lower so salaries can be lower there too. Being private they can save about $1M/yr in public company costs. They can also keep private their relationship with the auction houses and other various market makers.

CLCT has said they have 70% of the Vintage market and prior to this year they had 30% of the Modern market. With their new Modern initiative and looking at pop reports for both companies it appears Moderns are now 50/50. Submission costs are higher at PCGS and Vintage is more profitable so overall I would guess CLCT is much more profitable than NGC. NGC is certainly a greatly profitable company but if they were both public, CLCT would be the better play. As it is, no analyst even covers CLCT. Not a single one.

PSA has 90%-95% of the share of cards and autographs and is a virtual monopoly.

Looks like Economy submissions may be posting from the 8/10-8/12 range, what's the latest date anyone has received grades on? I have one received on 8/11 that I'm hoping to have back for the weekend.

I've been trying to "read the tea leaves" too. But I'm convinced every submission has it's own path, and they aren't predictable.

    Evidence:

    - 2 Regular crossover submissions, received 8/23. One of 6 coins, one of 8 coins.

    - The 6 coin submission posted on 9/20....19 business days.

    - The 8 coin submission hasn't posted yet.....today is 10/4.....29 business days.

*Sigh* Of course, the 8 coin submission is the one I'm most interested in.

    One was 19 business days...the other 31.

Lesson learned: Remove all stickers, notes, whatever from the old slabs. I neglected to remove my own stickers with variety designations on them, and that resulted in them pulling it from the "normal" flow in order to ask me if I wanted variety service.

I'm pretty sure that even after answering "No", the submission sat on someone's desk for 2 weeks. When I emailed to ask about the submission....they suddenly pushed it through before the end of the day.

Should be in my hands tomorrow!

Update on my 8/25 submission. I had both an economy and regular/voucher submission at the same time and interestingly my economy grades have posted but my regular submission has not. I think it's probably because I have TrueView imaging on my regular submission. I am quite happy with the grades and it seems that I was slightly conservative in my estimates on a couple.

On a side note, I thought economy submissions weren't eligible for "+" grades? I had a 1953 proof Washington that I thought was a shoe-in for CAM but instead went PR66+, guess I learned something today.

I'm on Business Day 42 for my oldest Economy order at our hosts. I'v noticed on the shared orders page that Economy Orders are being graded that were logged in 5 to 10 days after mine.

I've observed thatPCGS doesn't work on the order of "First in, First Out"; anyone have insight as to how they prioritize what gets graded before others? Do I beed to staple a $50 to the Order Form before shipping?

Latest estimates show Express at 7 days, Regular at 22, Economy at 37, and World at 20

Last year at the exact same time when there were NO complaints was 13 days for Express, 27 for Regular, 37 for Economy, and 38 for Modern

In other words, turnaround times are much faster than last year on 3 of 4 tiers and the same in the slowest tier.

Not sure where you get your info from but it is dead wrong. Last year at this time, looking at real orders of mine, they were WAY faster. You might be suffering from that blow to the head of selling 20000 shares of CLCT at $17 and watching it climb to $19.50

I track it in a spreadsheet. Your anecdotal inference is unscientific, inaccurate, and wrong. And I sold 18000 at $18+. It never went to $17. The last time it went under $18 was May. Troll much? How can anyone trust a single thing you say when clearly almost everything you say is wrong all the time, everytime? Stick to coins. Maybe you know something about them.
