Do you think this Morgan (1880-S) could grade MS66?

Yes. And CAC would probably green bean it at 66, too.

I think it would. It has a nice puffy cheek, solid hair, clean fields and great reverse color.

    I wouldn't leave it in a 65 holder.

    Sure. Try it.

I would crack it out and send that way. Has a better shot at 67 than 66 and am surprised there is not a gold sticker on that. The only wild card is if the images are altered to make it look so nice. If not, crack away.

Easily a 66 in my opinion.

    I dunno. How's the luster?

Depends on the luster for sure. Also, do I see a couple small gouges in the reverse breast feathers? If so, that could limit it to a 65 in my opinion.

65 is appropriate. too much chatter in front of her lips and around the date.

Pretty coin for sure. It might plus.

Aren't Morgans like the '80-S and '81-S held to a higher standard? So many are gorgeous. Seems like the TPG's grade them on a curve.

I was just thinking the same. Would have to see it in hand for sure, but that doesn't look right to me, either.

Unlikely it would get past 3 graders a finalizer and then CAC.

66 seems reasonable to me as the surfaces are 66+. I wouldn't crack it though. Maybe some faint hairlines that we can't see in the photos? Way too few marks for a 65 grade.

As Ikeigwin wrote, this date is held to a higher standard. Looks better than 65, but its an 80-s- they come nice.

Well, just as the previous posts, YES! Her beautiful untouched cheeks and the outstanding fields, yes, yes, yes! Maybe, even a 66+. What was PCGS thinking?

Me too. I always figured the 79-s, 80-s, 81-s, and 82-s sort of got leniency for a few too many marks because they tend to come with superb eye appeal, killer PL luster, and sharp strikes. If anything the lousy strikes and somewhat flattish luster of the common date O and P mints tend to get a pass into the MS65 grade if they are clean....yet don't nearly have the blasty eye appeal of the early S mints.

Even as such, I routinely see inferior coins in both PCGS and NGC plastic. The coin looks silly in MS65 plastic IMHO, unless we are missing something that is not apparent in the photo.

Grade just posted. It graded a 66 so the tribe was spot on.

I will send it back to CAC. It might sticker again, it should anyway. It's very PQ.

    Thanks for your input.

Yes, it's suspiciously mark-free, and dare I say it looks like what grades MS67 these days rather than 66? Take a good look at the cheek under a super-bright light and see if there is something under that darker toning.

Agree. Does the coin look that good in-hand? Is the luster full and strong? If yes, yes & yes then it should make 66 easily.

In the last two years they have tightened common date Morgan grading by 1.5 points, check out the pop reports we are talking hundreds of thousands in 66 graded already.

Nice job on your MS66 upgrade. Now for the sticker test.............

2 years (of potential tightening) is a drop in the bucket when you consider all the coins that got bumped up from 1995-2013. I seriously doubt that grades have "tightened" by 1.5 pts....which is essence would bring us back to 1989 standards. And if so, why not all the other series rather just Morgans?

Congrats on the grade, It certainly looks like it could make it into a 66+ holder.

The only thing that gives me pause about that coin is the obverse fingerprint with the black spots. It would be a much nicer 66 without it. Will that be CAC's pain point?

Maybe not 1.5 points, but almost all of the OGH Morgans are overgraded by today's standards and whatever you do, don't crack those suckers.
