Surprised to see him still posting on the boards. I guess I'd like to hear what Sabrgeek himself has to say about the situation, if anything.

WOW regarding sabrgeek. He posted an advertisement to one of his card shows in a separate thread. I asked him if he knew the condition, maybe from how it was packed and if what he received was comparable to what he gave. I was blown away by the pics to 1980scollector.

    What Christmas spirit.

Just want to clear one thing up. We have had two or three PM's offering to send us the 1989 Score cards we need for our set. I wasn't clear in my original post. We have our 1980's FB set run. It's an amazingly generous offer and greatly appreciated. We had sent our SS list that had modern sets(2013-2015)we collect currently and Kevin Durant. These cards were sent to us randomly.

We received four amazing cards from two other members. So we got amazing items and are thrilled. I just didn't want anybody to worry we needed a few cards for our sets. Thanks for the offer and hope that clears it up.

Sabrgeek was a Media Specialist at Beckett for many years and is a contributor to Sports Collector's Daily.

He says that he tried to send other items but "it was not good enough" so I don't know if that means he was told not to send more... or sent extra and it was not [still] not enough. He also said he was "shafted" but did not complain.

Probably does not justify what he sent, as he had no idea what he was going to receive. Maybe he should show us what his SS sent him. Surely someone who writes for SCD knows the below is not even close to being worth $100.00.

I doubt he will tell us. Maybe his SS can fill us in on what they "shafted" him with?

Seriously, why are you getting involved in this? When are you gonna learn not to get involved in things that don't involve you?

You didn't participate in the SS and have no business getting in the middle of any explanation or replies, or relaying messages on others behalf that they were "shafted".

Let Sabrgeek speak for himself, or not.

As a member of this community, and a longtime participant in CU Secret Santas, if someone is shafting others then I want to know about it for future involvement on my part in future gift exchanges or transactions.

So do the rest of us, so why don't we all just get back and let the parties that are involved reply, or not. If they don't, we'll still have our answer.

Stop trying to play detective - it's not needed and it doesn't help despite what you may have convinced yourself of.

Since we were the ones that received the present I do feel I have the right to make a comment on it. Well, considering he is sending his message through PM's to others. I did PM Manny about the gift because we weren't sure it was our actual SS gift. The cards were received in a bubble mailer with some not in top loads. They were thrown in there with no care or thought. The cards were nothing on our SS list or the player we collect. That's why we contacted Manny. We were a little confused at first. I find it interesting, after the fact, considering the blog that was just linked he mentions the thought is what makes the gift special.

The bigger concern is for the community. He joins 3-6 of these SS each year. In the past, it doesn't get noticed because of the $25 bare minimum. With all that said, all I want is for next year it not to happen to the next CU member. We have some cool guys on this board with generous hearts. Don't want them taken advantage of in the future.

Again, before you burn me at the stake remember the $ category difference than in the past. I'm sure with his writing background I will be the ahole in all of this. Oh well, it's worth it if it doesn't happen again next year.

I don't think anyone thinks negatively about you here. I'm glad you were able to get bonus gifts to help offset the disappointment. That's another great thing about the board, and the SS Exchange -- someone usually always gets the short end and the group comes together to make the experience better for that person.

At first i thought it was a joke, and the real gift was on its way...no one in their right mind can justify sending crap like that in a $100+ gift exchange...shameful.

Manny made the right call, now that person can no longer participate. That is all that needs to be said and done, plain and simple. Let's not taint a Secret Santa thread in which a great deal of joy was shared just because of one person who did not share the same spirit.

Jason ... What you say makes a lot of sense. However, knowing that this guy has done this on several forums ( from what I was told) , I think it's good to get the word out. In addition, did you read the article that he wrote for SCD last year about Secret Santa exchanges? Talk about being hypocritical.

I understand what you are saying as I read the article as well and am of the same mindset. I just don't want the forum as a whole to beat a dead horse and put a black eye on the SS exchange as a whole. I also don't want valued forum members to argue amongst themselves all because of someone else's actions.

    good day gents!

I had every intention of telling everyone what happened once the SS activities were done. I sent a PM to sabrgeek today.

Having said that to hear that he is a writer or contributor to SCD and actually wrote an article about the numerous SS he participated in last year was outrageous.

Since he penned that article and made his comments-- he deserves to be outed for screwing a fellow collector. I will compile the PMs between me and him tomorrow and post. He should not only be banned from the CU site but fired from his post at SCD.

I do think it important to set the record straight since sabrgeek wrote the SCD article. Once you pen an article and it is published--you step into a different category IMO. Had he not written that article I would have let it rest with banning him here. Here is what happened.

The rules were pretty clear when the thread was started. No one had any questions on what $100+ category was. And the rules also stated that if you did not have anything in your PC--then you would have to buy something on your SS recipient's list from eBay, BBCE wherever . This is how it has always been done so I did not reinvent the wheel.

Sabrgeek was matched up with 1980scollector. Here are the PMs that followed---

    Me to sabrgeek--

hi Rich--here is your SS recipient info, have fun and good luck and my prayers to your wife!

    MAnny

    Me to Sabrgeek on 12/16

morning--can you let me know what's up with the shipping of your gift. Thanks

    His Response--

Went out Monday from my shipper's office. I know it did because

    1) I paid him

    2) Nothing was in the office except one box

    3) He texted me when at work to verify all the Secret Santa material as he knows that is time sensitive

    Rich

    Me to Sabrgeek on 12/17

Please take a look at the SS thread. your recipient's kids opened the package that you sent them. He posted pictures of what was in the package. Was this what you sent them as your gift? If so it is far short of the $100+ group that you wanted in on. Care to explain before I post anything on the boards?

    Sabrgeek to me--

I thought it was retail value of over $100 but if he is not happy I'll be happy to send him some more material. I did not have anything from his sets he was working on so I sent him BK and FB HOFe with a book value of over $100' But I don't want anyone unhappy so if you send me his email I'll see what else I can come up for him

    Rich

    Me to Sabrgeek--

Please let me know what you intend to do as several other board members wanted to send him something if you did not. And we are almost out of time!

    Sabrgeek to me--

I sent him an email asking what else he would be interested in and got no reply -- I don't have anything else from his list. What else is he interested in so I can send him what he wants to complete the deal.

    Me to Sabrgeek--12/17

thanks for your prompt response. The rules were to stay with graded stuff if possible to make sure the $100 level was reached. And if you did not have anything in your collection that matched up--buy something. Honestly most guys are sending well over $100--closer to $200 gifts. You do not have to, but should send him something else. He has 2 boys who are also taking part and I would hate to disappoint them

    Sabrgeek to me--12/19

Well, I'm sorry I don't have those cards nor the contact for those specific cards. It's too bad for me they are so focused which is why I wanted a wider range of items to send. I don't think I'm the right SS for that person but it they have other needs, then I'm able to help

    me to Sabrgeek 12/19--

you going to make this right? You got 2 days left. I don't want to keep wasting time by messaging you if you are not so let me know 1 way or the other please. Also--I sent you what he was looking for -- I should not have to tell you what to get him. Your SS took the time to send you something that you wanted. You should do the same. I will not be sending you anymore messages. Make it right or don't

And so there are the facts. Clearly Sabrgeek had zero intention of doing this the right way. For that type of person to write a hobby article bestowing the virtues of the SS -- and then to screw a fellow collector--well you decide if he deserves to be on this or any other hobby site.

And how about him saying that he did not have the contacts to get the stuff that 1980scollector wanted? Really Rich ? Ever heard of eBay?

Get Lost -- we do not need you on these boards--but enjoy your free cards!

searched google with scd secret santa and sports coll digest secret santa etc. Found a Richard Klein. oh well. Thanks again and Happy New Years. Dont drink and drive. And drive defensively.

addendum- and it turns out to be RK. I used to read his articles and he speaks a great game. He is concerned about saving pennies and sending kids to camp. It just doesn't sound like the same guy would do this. Unreal. Live and learn. I do agree that such a person should be banned. Im still speechless if this isn't some sort of misunderstanding which it doesn't seem to be.Its almost pathologic that someone building a reputation would ruin it over "stealing" a few dollars in a very public way.
  • Options
I look at it a different way.

The holidays are a time when people are supposed to express their gratitude for and appreciation of others through gift giving. The point of SS is the giving, not the receiving. That is why it is fun to go out of your way to shop for things that you don't have so that you can meet your recipient's wish list. That is why it is so important to have other people post about what they got, so you can share in the joy of making other people happy. That is why it is even better when done online in a forum like this between people who may have never have even met, but are still willing to go above and beyond for others who are roughly "strangers" outside of a shared collecting interest.

I am not upset because 1980s was "screwed". As has been pointed out, the community will make things right. Because people care.

It's more a matter of shame. Shame on Sabrgeek for being someone who just doesn't care.

It's predictable that somebody who used to work for Beckett would cite "book value." However that same person should know better than anybody that "high book price" does not apply to creased garbage and cards with rounded corners.

A few members really went out of their way. They had their own SS to shop for and went above and beyond for us. I don't think that is getting the proper attention. They went online and searched for things that mean a lot. They even wrapped the items with a note. We can concentrate on the one light package or we can concentrate on the presents in the thread. I am really impressed with the thought almost everyone put into their gifts. It is so much fun to follow. I want to tip my cap to Manny, the SS that sent a lot of extra packages, the people who posted their items etc.

    You're good people!

Really awesome to see people right someone else's wrong. Pretty obvious after reading the comments here and the article the guy wrote about last years "haul" that he was definitely looking to cash in on SS. In this hobby some people are overcome with personal greed and will attempt to screw over just about anyone in order to profit. Really nice to see people call him out and even nicer to see peoples outright generosity when it comes to giving.

Most everyone on here is about forgiveness but your apology, well it really isn't an apology, your explanation just doesn't ring true. From what Im reading about your background you seem much too intelligent that you would just screw up and that this was an honest mistake. You deny taking advantage of the situation?

SOLUTION - If you believe what you're saying is true and honest. Please send me your want list of up to $3000 of beckett book value and Ill send you the items for $2400 paypal f&f. Your getting 20% off, Ill find the exact player and year cardboard, buy them on my own and send them off to you. What are your thoughts crossing your mind right now?

Interesting that wrestle card writes "educated" at the same time that I write "too intelligent". Which means many others are thinking the same thing that the writer for SCD "simply screwed up" and thought the value of a bent, crease Sanders rookie is 50-100 bucks. I would love to see Sabres card collection.

I don't write for Beckett of Scd. So when quoted VCP or book values, then that dollar amount applies to any condition card? My bad. Ive been way undercharging for my bent, creased cards when all this time I could have been getting NR MINT value.

With the type of products and articles you cover on SCD you damn well know that those cards are not worth crap in those conditions and to ignore completely the rules of the exchange that were laid out before you agreed to join makes this even more entertaining Rich. Then to play dumb like why come you expect me to get stuff like off his list?? Why come you being so mean to me, why come you think there are places in 2015 in which you think I can find those type of items for this insane want list.

Someone create some hashtags and stuff and see if we can make those pics go viral for $100 worth of amazing cards. Like you can even turn your $100 into $1000 by the end of the year with where those high grade HOF cards are heading.

Also I have a suggestion for you Rich about not having the contacts for those cards. That website that you happen to write like articles for. Take the time to like maybe load that website and you will see nothing but advertisements going up and down the sides of it. There are even banner ads across the top of it. Right now I count 3 ads for this site called eBay that happens to sell millions of sports related items and even sites like comc.com that sells sports cards. Both sites have this really amazing feature that is called the search feature. When you type in the name of a person or an item the sites magically look for "contacts" who can then sell you those items to fulfill your obligation that you agreed to in this SS exchange.

A quick Sabrgeek search here on the CU site will show that the large majority of his posts are in the countless threads he starts hocking his card show, or other people's threads giving away free cards.
All your money won't another minute buy.

    Rich

    1. you did not screw up. What you did was intentional from the get go. More importantly I gave you the opportunity to make it right and you elected not to. So don't say you screwed up. What "screwed up" was that someone decided to out you

    2. you could not have possibly thought that what you sent met the minimal $100 level. Not with your hobby level and experience. So that makes you a liar too

    3. I think I can speak for everyone in this community in saying that no one in this CU community wants anything from you. We don't want you here anymore

    4. Maybe instead of writing an article for SCD on your hauls from your numerous SS experiences--the nerve of you sir!--you can instead write about the people on this board who truly care about one another and step up for one another.

Of course you would have no personal knowledge in that regard

Although this whole thing turned a wrong direction, it looks like a 90% success.

Maybe do a few of these a year for the fun of it all ? Would very much like to partake.

    My compliments to all
