In the past, when I used ebay (the good old days), I always sniped - would nuclear bid

There was an 1918-S Buffalo Nickel in an ANACS MS64 slab in which I was the under bidder back in 2002. The coin was very nice (sorry, not images), but I had only recently started bidding in on-line auctions and was hesitant to risk serious money. Plus the images were only so-so. The coin sold for cheap and about a year later I saw it had crossed to a PCGS 63 slab. After 13 years it still bugs me that it got away.

It's easy to think "if I had only bid X more dollars I could have won the coin". What you'll never know is how much over X the high bidder would have gone.

How true. I learned from my earlier bidding mistake and now use live phone bidding with a set price limit that I stick to. Won a nice 93cc double eagle @heritage auction 10 days ago.

Agreed! When I lose out on a coin I try to put it far away from me and try not to linger on it.

the interesting thing is that this was offered in an auction that

I won several medals in, yet I only discovered it doing a search

about 3-4 months later. when I saw it and realized I had missed it I almost fell off my chair.

Ok, the OP's 1937-d 3 legger got away from him in 2007, as the market started to get overheated. Isn't that coin a lot cheaper today as more specimens have shown up on the market? Isn't that a good thing for collectors? I'd bet a lot of people wished they let more coins get away from themselves in 2006-2008.



I remember an 1898 gem $10 Lib that "got away" from me at a Stack's auction in the later 1980's. I recall that date being quite elusive in gem at that time. I bid around $2800 for it and it went 1 increment higher. I kicked myself for years over that coin....until it showed up again for sale at auction in the early 2000's. Stack's mentioned the previous auction appearance. I couldn't believe that the coin was sort of baggy....maybe a MS63. What was I seeing 15 years earlier? Sure glad I didn't buy it back then.

To honest I try to forget the coins I didn't win in auctions. To me auctions are mostly disappointing. I either don't get the item, or I pay too much when I do win it. I can count on one hand the number of times I have gotten "bargains" on coins in an auction.

I don't have pics of it and I was a little late in seeing it on ebay (it had just closed) but back about 15 years or so ago there was a Connecticut commem with unbelieveable autumn colours on the tree. It was sweet! I've not seen it show up anywhere since (although I really don't look around too much for it either).



I wish I'd have seen it sooner, it would be locked up tight in my collection.

There are a handful that have gotten away, but don't have the images. I find I can handle it better when my bid gets creamed and I lose by a large margin. If I happen to lose by only a few dollars or one small increment, well...

this coin has the eye appeal of a grade much higher than ms62.
such are the vagaries of the so called precision 11 point grading system.

I found a sweet 1875 3CN PCGS AU58 on the bay a few weeks ago with a BIN or Best Offer. The BIN was too high in my opinion (3X trends), so I made an offer, it was declined and sold within the same keystroke it seems. Someone apparently made an offer just a skosh higher than mine and of course the seller took the higher offer.
