I take a couple days off from this thread and I return to see a mic drop and a killer Joe D. The MJ 10 is incredible. Nothing more to say. The Joe D could pass for a higher grade, centering is awesome on that thing. Doug, love your Mantle collection.
Here is the most recent addition to my Star Basketball collection, Big Game James!
dnice.... that joe d looks great...if that was presented to me raw id be thinking fake...im def not saying fake, I'm saying how great that card looks....also, I'm not a fan of resubbing but that looks so good for an 8 id think hard about resubbing it if it looks just as good in person as it does here...congrats
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all.
Thanks Slum and Seebelow. The card to me looks like an 8.5. I have studied this card and compared it to other 8's and I have yet to see one better.
The card use to belong to Matt Miller originally and I remember eyeing it but it wasn't for sale at the time. Matt has a great eye for cards and I trust him when it comes to his judgement in cards. The Joe D then made it was to Jeff (Card Country) and I don't know how long he had it for but I estimate he had it for about a year possibly and then I saw it pop up on his CF site just before the national and I knew that it wouldnt make it past the weekend and so I reached out to Jeff and inquired about it. A deal was made and so now I have it were I think its going to stay with me for a long time. But I've also said that about other cards and then I've ended up selling them so who knows.
Great looking Worthy. I also picked up a quad 9.5 Worthy recently.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

+1
If I saw it out of a holder, I too might be tempted to assume it was a reprint given how great it looks. Phenomenal pick up, Marc, congrats!
Doug, amazing eye appeal on the Mantle PSA 2 that, undoubtedly, trumps those of many higher graded examples. Congrats on the solid addition!
got this from a fellow board member, if he wants to reveal himself...think we mess w/ each other from time to time, but we struck a price point pretty easily, invoiced me quickly and shipped the next day as promised.
it's how deals should go and wish they all were like this.

Great card and I think I know who you're talking about. Always good to see people work things out and have positive experiences interacting here
First Cracker Jack - Probably overpaid, but I thought about this card nonstop since the moment I saw it listed and absolutely had to own it. Can't wait for it to arrive!

Amazing looking card. I saw it too and thought about bidding, just not the right time. By far johnsons best looking card IMO.
I left the National with some money in my pocket and some regret in my mind. I'd purchased from several vendors but left product behind. Fortunately I either had a booth number or enough info to relatively easily direct someone. Kirk and CPAMike were kind enough to do a Saturday check for me. In both cases items had been sold, but Mike's guy (79 Topps FB Trays) said he had more at home and supplied contact info.
Worked out a good deal for these:
Also remembered him having an empty 73 box. I passed on it there cuz I didn't want to try getting it home safely. I don't have a box collection but I thought this was too cool to pass up for $25.
Thanks for the help guys.

Another golfer arrived today, thinking of trying to get a Cotton Player Set started (I can't believe there isn't one already) and this was a slight upgrade over my raw copy and priced right. 30 pro wins and 3x winner of the Open Championship, likely could have added a few more wins and another major or two if not for his military service and the Open being cancelled 1940-1945.
Major upgrade to my Munson basic collection arrived today. I've been wanting one of these for a while that didn't have the typical fish eyes in the black.

First off, it seems like each month of acquisitions by everyone has topped the previous month. Just some awesome cards and packs in this thread! My August has been fairly slow but I've picked up a few cards for my 56 set and a 75 mini pack.
Won these in an ebay auction over the weekend..
I've been looking for both checklists for the set for a while, and I have had real difficulty finding one centered and to my liking. This one popped up on EBAY and I bid strong on it to leave no doubts
I also am trying to collect graded packs from the 70's. While I had a few 75 mini packs that are ungraded, I was happy to get this mini pack from a board member a few weeks ago!
Bob, You are a maniac in picking up cards. Congrats to you.
Paul, Great pickup on that 66 Mantle. The Mantle bug can get expensive. Good Luck, enjoy that ride.
That Gehrig is a beautiful card.
Its really hard to comment on everyone stuff, I feel bad that I don't individually call out everyone, but its so hard with all the stuff being acquired. Congrats to you all on the recent pickups.
Matt I collect: 80’s Rookies and 86 Fleer Basketball

+1, I feel the same way. Incredible cardboard all around!
This was a recent 4SC purchase. I felt the grade fit and this was not a gimmie 10. I used a 20x loupe on the image online image and I counted 10 white pixels along each L/R border and 8 pixels along each T/B border. Did it in 3 different places and still got the same result. It's just like measuring for hanging blinds, lol. Eric Davis' first card happens to be in this team set as well...An awful shot with his eyes closed and looks like he's sighing!
I've started some new projects, so the last few days have had a lot of packages arriving.
I've still got a few of the 86F RCs that I want, and Ewing was one of them. This 8 looked pretty solid.
With this Brown, I'm just one card away from completing the Basic Registry.
I also decided to start a Koufax Basic Set. I have 55, 56, and 63, and grabbed this 57.
Here's a few Duke's for my Bowman Snider run. Still need a 53 and also to decide whether to sub my 52 (OC), or just get one graded.
Finally, several mid-low grade Micks for my Topps Basic Run. I knew when I picked up a few raw Topps Mantles in a collection purchase recently and graded them, and then couldn't part with them, I was in trouble. Now the goal is keeping it reasonable.

The DiMaggio. Just wow. Best looking 8 on a card of that age I've ever seen. Very nice.

<< <i>Thanks for the comments. The DiMaggio was also purchased from Jeff as well. It really is an awesome looking card. Looks like an 8.5 in hand. >>
Saw that card on his CF page previously, and you picked up a tremendous card. He always has great cards which are well centered with great eye appeal.
Special "2" on the 53 Mick.
Ted Williams even has perfect form on his bobble head-- look how he has that hip and back leg turned!

August seems to be the month that keeps on giving... congrats to you both on the additions.

I believe that would be his rookie card, most of his stuff are from 1936 Olympic year, but this is the german cigarette card that came a year before.
and technically a 2013 pick up from another board member, just took a while to send in...

+1, are those going to be sitting in new slabs soon?
it's one of the few cards that i prefer in the sgc state.
i would love the ryan to make a straight cross for my opc set, but we know how picky they can be on that
but will certainly give it a couple of attempts!
