<< <i>Great pick ups all around. I am sure we will be seeing some major heat in this thread!
The National was a great time and it was a pleasure meeting some members here. I made a few small additions:
>>
I was on a quest to get this card and literally could not find it.
Though I did see some high grades, which I couldn't afford, I never saw a single raw one. I either missed the booth with all of them, or you got there right before I did.
Well, I was unable to find this card at National in the desired look/price ratio. So, as luck would have it, a timely 4X promo allowed me to spend some of the money that came back from Nat with me to add this one to the PC.
52-90 All Sports, Mostly Topps, Mostly HOF, and some assorted wax.
I wasn't able to go to the Natty, but I purchased these 3 cards from Jeff (Cardcountry) while everyone else was there. I feel like I got my fix between reading all of the anecdotes from those who attended and finding these guys:
Hat tip to Begsu who taught me how to use my scanner correctly. Thanks to everyone for posting pictures of purchases from the show. This thread is very impressive and highly entertaining.
Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.
<< <i>Returned after a month out of the country to an offer for these two beauties from a member here...
1986 Panini Supersport - Seve Ballesteros, regular and foil. I missed out on the graded copies Scott had available a couple months back, but thankfully he remembered my interest
Looks like everyone who went had a great National, thanks for sharing all the pickups from there and elsewhere! I'm drooling. >>
good to have ya back, kyle!
nice seves...never seen that foil before, is it an '86 as well? >>
Thanks for noticing I was gone I believe so on both being 86s, though there's no date on them, the backs are the same. The regular is #204 and the foil #s 108A/B. Scott has another foil, I believe, if you're interested in one just PM me. >>
This is not my Tyson card, but I would assume that if 1986 is the correct year on those, then the foil Ballesteros is also 1986.
Here's my post national pickup. I've decided to jump on the bandwagon now before Harper's cards go upward and out of my range like Mike Trout's cards have done. The kid is having amazing season and only 22. Quick stat recap on Harper through 8-7 Second in MLB in hitting .334 only .2 points away. Leading MLB in OPS 1.126, OBP .463 and SLG .663 , 7th in HR with 29 & 11th in RBI's 69.

Some beautiful cards here guys! Glad I had a hand in a few of them finding the right homes!! John- I love the Banks story, and it's a perfect fit for your display!

Great stuff as always on here. The Mantle Auto RC is unbelievable. The 69 Bench auto is sweet also. I think that is his best looking card (much better than the shared RC). Great choice for an auto. John, I love the story behind the Banks card as well as the card itself.
No National for me, but I was inspired to get moving on some Star BK cards. Here are my first Star cards! Super excited to get these and looking forward to adding more.
I love those Star cards, Steve. On a side note - your Barkley #202 has some of the best eye appeal I've seen on that card. It seems like most copies I've come across have a super oddly cut bottom edge.
I missed the National (again) this year, so I found myself a little (ie. mini) buddy on eBay last week...
I would agree that there is some amazing stuff this month. That Frank Robby RC looks like an "8." The Start Basketball are off the charts. Keep'm coming everyone.
wow--some great stuff in this thread. Great to see the differences in collecting interests...
Here are my conquests from the NATIONAL
back in '96 or so I bought multiples of every player from the '86 Fleer basketball set--except guess who? For some reason I thought it was dumb to buy Jordans for $25-50.
Got this from Al Duroso--a very nice guy
another item I have seen jump in price in the past 2 years==kept saying "get one now..."
I am working on a complete Topps basketball wax box run from 1970--1981...shown is the '77/78 and '81/82 along with the Big Kahuna. This was the 7th '80/81 sold by Steve
didn't really think about buying this one but think it's a worthy addition---1981 Rack
Additions to my registry sets--I own the #1 '69 4 in 1 set--awesome set
I actually added the Who Am I? cards in PSA-8--but forgot to take pic--these are the replacements
Never saw this one--1948 Magic Lens unopened pack--I think they held the Hocus Focus cards
and though they suck this year--tribute to my Red Sox
I just did a Natty/postNatty pickup - I procrastinated - forgot - then remembered - then got lazy - and lucky for me Steve still had the 2 boxes and reduced the price! That's good luck - more to come.
Back to your pickups - the Jordan is sweet and the 69Ts are beauties!
<< <i>1948 Magic Lens unopened pack--I think they held the Hocus Focus cards >>
I've got a GAI pack like yours - I believe you have it wrong - what you have is the 1955 Bowman Magic Pictures - the "Hocus Focus" was a 55-56 Topps product.
The cards inside the Magic Pictures (nonsport) are lenticular in nature - like the Kelloggs cards - so the photo moves when you rotate the card. I don't have any myself other than the pack, so this is to the best of my understanding. I'm not a nonsport guy in any way.
Thank you guys for the kind words, and letting me share. And more importantly some incredible cards posted this month! The hauls coming back from Chicago are giving me the itch to start scooping up some random items on eBay. Great work, team!
Yeah, that '57 Robinson is incredible. Depending on the bottom right corner I would think that would be a strong candidate to bump. Love that card. Enjoy and congrats on the pick up.
Dave
Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.
This is an epic thread. Too much to catch up on so I will just stick with the recent posts. The Frank Robinson is fantastic, tough to find 57's centered that well. Manny, too much to congratulate you on, so I had to PM you. svtPony95, with a front like that, who cares about the back? Great pickup on the Big Train. Jeff, the Brett is certified high end in my book.
Bobby, Jeff, John, Matt and Matt M. -- Thanks for the nice comments about the Star cards. I have always wanted to pick them up, not sure why I waited so long. I agree that these are some underrated cards. Hopefully, they stay that way until I can get my hands on some more. I love the colors and design. It is so hard to find high grade examples of them. I agree that if PSA ever decides to grade them that it could really take the lid off of these sets. In the meantime it is amazing to me that a lot of the "other" HOF RC's besides MJ haven't appreciated more greatly. The #101 is higher priced in all grades compared to the 86 Fleer, yet I picked up a BGS 9.5 Ewing for a fraction of what a BGS 9.5 or PSA 10 Fleer Ewing would cost.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
A couple of photos - the 1960 is a pickup from the Natty, and the 1956 is one I finally scanned - only images I had previously were from the IPhone which were not clear.

Musial Auto is awesome, and on a gorgeous, slept-on card. The Mays...mint. Classic football. And all on just one page, a treat to look at.

Loved the full size Brett in an earlier post also, which I'm guessing is a PSA 9.

Bob, Said it earlier and will say it again, I love that Musial. Very well done.
Great Harper Chrome Bobby. I would like to add that card as well, cant find it reasonably priced.
That 57 Frank Robby RC is a beauty. Clean and well centered for a card that's super hard to find dead centered.
Love those Star RC Stephen. If PSA ever decided to grade those.......Oh Man, would they launch into orbit.
Jeff, That 75 Brett Mini is a BLAZER! That card is screaming review to me. What I like most is that it fills up the entire holder. Great Eye friend.

as w/ just about any sports fan there are those players on other teams that you just love to despise/heckle.
kinda mirroring the seinfeld magic loogey ep or the "hater's ball" skit off chapelle show.
this turned out the be the trifecta of a perfect storm or some might say: a beautiful mess!
with that being said, i'd like to present my 1951 signed (ewe) willie mays (ewe) that was purchased from probstein* (ewe):
* i needed this card for 2 sets however did not break my own rule and did not participate in his auctions...
it was a straight buy it now and kinda loving it more and more each day simply for the story!

Jeff - that's a beauty - why only an 8? Maybe the little print dot? Strong corners and great centering! Congratulations.
Hope you attend AC next year.
After this year? I'm now a regular - more fun than I ever imagined - it's more about the people than the show as such if you know what I mean?
Sorry for the crumby picture !!
