Lenny- You're crossing them to increase3 their value in the marketplace, so the jokes not on you at all!

On the opposite hand when I sent my 11 AU 58 Barber Halves in for "+" only consideration they sent the coins back the same day received (regular tier). I really had to wonder if they even looked at them (all 11 failed).

    I love them Barber Halves.....

I added a MS "V" Nickel today - common as they get -
but - its a nicely struck and lustrous coin - and in an older
holder - nice toning - and nothing too disturbing on its surfaces....

    imageimage

    First off - I thought it was a 64... not flashy enough for a 65 ....

    Surprise, surprise....

This reminds me of the CAC submission I made last year - I carefully cherry picked what I thought were the perfect coins for the grade - all solid, IMHO.

A total of 26 Halves sent in with a variety of grades.... I got a 100% score.
    None of them CAC'd.image

Most of the Quarters and almost all of the Dimes CAC'd - but - for what ever reason,
    not one half.

This year, I sent in the rest of my halves - none I thought were that strong for their
grade.... and I got 60% acceptance. Go figure.

Paesan - You are absolutely right, they always get the last laugh.

Mike - Nice looking V Nickel. And CAC is a roll of the dice just like the TPG's. Who ever knows?????

Pics for this AM, not a newp, but an under-rated date IMO, PC62:

Beautiful looking Quarter, Vern It looks better than a 62 to me. Now clean up the reverse of that slab!

Mike- are you going to keep the 19ll 5C in the slab or crack it? It's a lock 64; maybe a 65 as you say. Perhaps the Registry Set should give Bonus Points for OGH to keep them intact?

    I love them Barber Halves.....

Vern- nice looking quarter, I like the colors.

Mike - I haven't gotten around to anything but halves yet, but like the darker tone of the nickel a lot. I think toning brightly colored or nice subtle browns really make for pleasant looking pieces.

I'll decide that once I have it in hand. The upgrade to a 64 isn't worth the expense
of resubmitting it. I might send it to CAC and be done with it.

Vern, Called customer service, their finalizers are a "little behind." Said it would be done next week. I told them that they said that 3 weeks ago. Who knows?

    Nice 11-S!

Thanks for the nice comments on my 11-S.

Paesan - I guess that means that all the coins that have been going through economy and 5-day that met their normal turnaround time, don't get looked at by finalizers. I can believe that.

My Economy submission entered into the PCGS system on May 3 was graded yesterday. Nothing exciting in there; just a Proof '03 Nickel, a bunch of 55/ 58 Barber Dimes, a few Barber Quarters to upgrade, and some spare Halves to sell. It took 33 business days.

Vern... I meant to compliment you on your 11-S Quarter.
    Very attractive coin.

Hard to believe the lengthy time it's taking to get coins
graded. I have a few coins needing to get submitted...
I was planning on an economy submission - now, not so sure.

I was fortunate to preview a group of MS 67 Quarters from my
friend, SROTAG, and these are duplicates from the # 1 set.
Nothing has been finalized, so, I'll keep the dates quiet until
the deal is set in cement.

Mike - very, very nice 1911 Liberty nickel. IMO, the OGH could almost be construed as a "CAC-like" endorsement in itself.

Vern - the 11-S and 09-S Barber quarters are sweet.

Looks like one of my contacts is sending me two upgrades
for my Quarter collection - which is a surprise to say the least !

    I'm getting a 1900- Phila in PCGS 58 and a 1909-S in PCGS 55.
No images - but - really looking forward to at least seeing them as I
have these in AU 55 and AU 53 respectively.

Well I guess I should stop complaining. Grades have arrived, 5 for 5 with one upgrade on my crosses. Only one Barber in the group though, an 08-O quarter to complete my set. ?? Previous NGC 58 now PC 58.

I thought for sure I'd get a downgrade or a DNC. I'll have to send the finalizers a box of chocolates!

Have to compliment Labelman - his 02-O Quarter has a lot of eye appeal.
He has a hundred good stories about "back in the day" when he was a
coin dealer in the Metro NYC area. I could listen to him for hours. Lots
    of anecdotal observations.

Milo's 1903-O Quarter is also quite nice. Good pick up.

Vern, re: the 1900-O, it's no longer a sleeper. It's twice the price of its sister "S" .
If I have images of my older lower graded AU's, I'll attach them. As mentioned,
I don't have images of the newps....I should have the newps in hand by next Tuesday.

A good friend had some really nice Quarters sent to him on approval. One coin of which
I am very anamored with is the 1902-O in PCGS 66+ CAC .... I don't think he'd mind if
I posted it here, considering he finalized the deal and bought it.

    Here's the Gardner 1902-O - ex: NGC 66 - now: PCGS 66+ / CAC

Lenny - Congrats on completing your Quarter set with the 08-O ! Who would have
ever thought that would be your last coin - or - are you planning on any upgrades ?

Mike, I recently sold two 08-O quarters. Technically, my set has been complete for a while, but I never bothered crossing my NGC 08-O to satisfy my PCGS registry. When I decided to get the 1907-D designated as a DDO, I threw in a batch of type coins in garbage holders to fill the package. The 08-O quarter was included.

For a while I toyed with the idea of doing a secret NGC set, but that idea is long gone.

As for the 1900-S vs. 1900-O, my opinion is the S is a common coin, the O is semi-key in AU, and price should be doubled for an equally eye appealing example...so a nice 58 would be 300$ for an S and 600$ for an O.

Paesan - CONGRATULATIONS on completing your set and what a set!! Going 5 for 5 on the submissions ... well, let's just say you deserved some good news given your extended wait.

Mike - Nice 08-D and Vern deserves the credit on my newp 03-0 as he's the one who hooked me up with that nice example. I starred at the Gardner 02-O so long my screen saver came on ...

I purchased a raw 1894 S Barber Quarter a few weeks ago on eBay from the Czech Republic for $80. The listing photos were OK, but not great. One never knows what's coming in the mail- here it is:

There's a very interesting CUD in the top loop of the last "S" in STATES. Anyone seen this before?

I'll be sending it off to PCGS in a few day with a bunch of Barber (and some Seated) material for grading. I'm guessing it will come back in a 53 holder; not bad for $80. It hopefully will fill a blank hole in my slowly growing set.

On the Everyman's Barber Half front Brad Spelt passed Darrell to the top spot by 1/100 of a point. Just in time for the awards! Brad just received a LOT of 58+ grades; it makes me dizzy! Dave - The drought will end eventually.

Mike - I think your 08-O in 58 has a nice original look. Good luck with your HA sale.

Paesan - Major league congratulations on attaining #1 all-time with your everyman quarter collection. It's especially noteworthy since you've gone after eye appealing original coins, rather than just the highest number on the slab.

Jeff - The Czech Republic? Barbers are everywhere. And I have a feeling Darrell will regain the barber half title shortly.

Sure have been a lot of nice coins posted since I last posted.

I've been hard at work selling another of my collections. Wonder if Mike,Jeff,or Lenny ever got the bug since they live in Florida!

    SeaShells!

Jeff, The tears came gushing out when I saw this yesterday morning! image I would like to know how many submissions it took Brad to get there. They actually +'d his 97-O! I have been hunting and watching for months for any plus grades! There are several that should be available but I can't find them. Tis definitely splitting hairs at this point! 1 common date I believe would place me back on top...maybe! I still think I have 5 or 10 in my set that should be +'d! Maybe I'll submit them again this fall.

PS if someone knocks off one of Brad's top pops would put me back too...of course someone could knock off another of mine! I paid big money for a top pop only to have Brad knock it down. image

I had the opportunity to go over Brad's set - as he had
purchased a dozen or so of my Halves back in August, 2011
auction in Chicago / ANA sale. It's interesting to see some of
my 58's are now in 58+'s ...ie: my old 1904-S....

I have another 9 AU 58's that one of these days, need to be sent
in for 58 "+" reconsideration. I wonder if they'll look at some of my
others as well for a plus designation. I have a few 53's & 55's that
deserve some TLC "+" notations !!

Had an interesting day today; a friend offered me his AU 55 - 1914-S
Quarter ( PCGS ) - which just about puts my collection on standstill.
When I started the Quarter set, I decided not to shoot for "the Big Three".
I have a few coins that I'd like to upgrade - but I have been hunting
far and wide for a few of these Quarters. Today, I received a nice 1900
Phila issue Quarter in PCGS 58 - it's already packed up ready to go to
CAC. I have a few other coins going to CAC - mostly Barber Dimes and
V Nickels. I have to wait for two other coins to get delivered before I do
any further submissions to CAC .

The post man also delivered my new 1903-O Dime in PC 62 - also wrapped up
and ready for CAC ... Looks much nicer, IMHO, more like a 64.

My YN Photographer - Valente151 - was busy all day at our mutual friend's home,
SROTAG ( Dave W. ) and he imaged close to a few hundred coins. Valente151 will
be posting his handiwork within a few weeks - and I think we'll be in for a real treat.

If anyone will be at FUN, SROTAG and Valente151 will be either in lot viewing or
wandering the Bourse Floor. I have decided to pass on this year's Summer FUN show.
I have made arrangements for Heritage to call me when the only coin I want is up
for auction. I'll be very happy if no one bids me up ... I'm not going to Jinx myself by
saying what it is. SROTAG has already told me that the coin is mine as no one is crazy
enough to overbid my max. I hope his estimation is correct.

Ok... Hope everyone is enjoying their Summer. It's hot here in Naples, but the Gulf breezes
make it tolerable.... The dogs enjoy their park - and they've made lots of friends. It's been hard
to gauge when to go, because of the rain clouds that show up in a moments notice. It can be
beautiful here at home and twenty minutes away ( where the park is ) could be raining.

Ok...have fun with your coins ... And I wouldn't worry about being displaced in the Everyman's set.
After all, DK, you do have a complete set for every grade imaginable.

Thanks, Vern. I remember my old 05-O with great fondness as it was a bear to find
    image

and not exactly as tough as the 97-O ( which was a nice 55. )

Milo's 1896-S Quarter in F12 is stunning ! Very solid for the grade and perfect surfaces.
Not many survived looking that good.

I heard from SROTAG last night - seems Valente151 worked his tail off all day
and has left the job of editing for his free time at home.

Valente sent me teaser image on my cell phone this morning. Just an Obverse

    I was the fortunate bidder on a 1909-S Quarter - PCGS 55 - thru
David Kahn on eBay. I thought my end price was fair - and it didn't
hammered as badly as I thought it might.

Knowing how tough this date is I don't mind having a duplicate. My
best one is a 63 - and it's just plain amazing - the nicest one I've ever seen.

Paesan - CONGRATULATIONS on your #1 All-Time Everyman's Barber Quarter Collection!! A great collection for a great guy ... well done.

Vern - Thank you for posting the pics of my 96-S in F12 OGH. This is one of my favorite coins of my set and really my favorite date/mintmark. I will gladly keep this one until I find the right XF/AU example.

Mike - Thank you for the compliment on my 96-S. I agree that I think it is about as good as it gets with an F12 barber quarter. Congrats on your newp 09-S in 55 from David Kahn. I almost gave you some competition on that one, but I decided to stick with my 53 for now. Again, congrats, and it is a very nice coin.

Vern - I would be happy to bring the 1909-S "P 63" to the next BCCS meeting at Winter FUN.
Its as special as any coin I have seen - it has the look of a 67+ IMHO. It just has a few
inobtrusive marks keeping it in a 63 grade.

I believe FUN is going to be at a venue in Ft Lauderdale next January. I live about an hour
and a half away. I may just commute back and forth for a few days - I'll decide later.
I have the dogs to consider. They'll be fine in their pens for 6 hrs - that only gives me
about three hours at the show each day. Maybe better to kennel them for that show.

Congrats Lenny for the Everyman Top Spot. I know exactly how hard you've worked
to get your set to the level its in. As you said - " with a little help from your friends"

Speaking of which, a good friend is allowing me to take his duplicate 1914-S - in PCGS 55:

This coin should be familiar to many Barber Quarter collectors ....
    especially Vern and Paesan.

I'm extremely pleased with this transaction - more than I thought I could have realized.

I'm also taking his duplicate 1895-Phila Quarter as he bought a nicer one which was
already CAC - and has richer toning - I have a MS 63 - which I may sell off one of these
days and just keep the 58:

Milo -Your 1896-S F12 really is just about perfect for the grade. Great coin. I hate to repeat myself but here is a re-post of my 1896-S PC58. (Thought you might enjoy seeing it.)

Craig - OMG ... what a beautiful 96-S in 58. A real dream coin!! One day I would LOVE to have a coin like this one. Thanks for sharing the pics again.

Mike - Congrats on the 14-S in 55 (very, very nice), and that 95 in 58 ... what a gem!! I think it's literally a perfect 58 IMHO. That is really my kind of look.

Thank you all for the congrats on the #1 set. I'll continue to downplay it though. In the end, it's just numbers on plastic, and better sets have been assembled.

Mike, congrats on your 09-S in 55. Milo and I had a brief discussion about it and we both liked it, and we had agreed to let him bid. Turns out he didn't, and you ended up with a very good buy IMO and I'm happy that someone here took it down at a very good price.

Also, the 14-S in 55 does not look familiar, but I did sell or trade an AU to Walt a number of years back, with a spot on the obverse. He had it restored. Perhaps that's the coin?
