Here's a new raw pickup, an 1899 O Barber Quarter:
The mark left of the eye is a "struck-thru" divot. This seems to be quite common in Barbers from New Orleans. Since the divot has a very precise sharp shape with rounded edges the object that was on the planchet must have been hard? Does anyone have insight?
1903-P Half Dollar in PC58. I was in conversation with Barry P. from MN at the ANA WFoM on Thursday who needed this coin for his half dollar set. I parted ways with this coin to help out my Barber friend. Barry is a BCCS member and a really good guy:

Nice looking '11 Jeff! I think you're spot on with the 63 grade.

Glad you ended up with it Jed. I saw the coin, was too late in purchasing it. When I found out you got it, I felt a lot better a friend of mine got the coin. Great pick up Jed!

@jedm I continue to look for an XF upgrade to my VF35 for the '03-S BQ. Don't get me wrong, I do like the coin I have, however, just that I am going for an XF set:
I also have an NGC AU53. I just can't find a decent XF. Some dates are tougher in XF I guess!

Supposedly a new one... I will bet the same fake-maker origins. In conversation with the seller now and he asked me, "how can you tell?" Here is the previous one that was being attempted to be sold from Europe a year ago...
Look how similar they are!

Yeah they both have reverses that didn't show up until after 1900

Did you ask for a close up photo of the coins edge?
The coin has a Type III OBV paired with a Type III REV. Neither hub type was introduced until 1900. The Reverse could be from an authentic coin (minted after 1899), but the OBV is fantasy. The OBV appears to be struck, and all details appear to me to be authentic except for the wrong hub type. This leads me to believe it's a Chinese struck fake, not a muled coin.
Tim- what was your theory? I'm getting forgetful.....
Tim- what was your theory? I'm getting forgetful.....
Jeff, you are right to ask about the edge-photo. The article published on the previous 1897-S centered S fake was the Barber Coin Collector Society (BCCS) Journal Vol. 31, Number 4, Winter 2020. On page 19, I state the Fall 2020 coin as having "cast slag" evident below the date. Not sure about this newly announced coin in terms of coin edge particulars.
EDIT: Seller took down the listing.

Here's an 1895 S Half with the shield clash in the ear:
I've looked at all the '95 S Halves I could find for this variety. I've only found one other example out of the hundreds I've looked at. It's apparently quite rare, but not valuable.

Jeff, I agree with Jed... a great coin! let's work together to get some of your pics and descriptions into the BCCS Varieties sheets for the pending, upcoming website additions at barbercoins.org
Great job locating that!

I've had that '95 S Half for about 10 years- I paid way up for it at a Heritage Auction.
I would consider the coin as a very minor variety since it's a Die State, but it's still interesting. I'm surprised that others don't seem to be around, however.
Am I the only one that doesn't understand the current grading? That coin is at least a 35 and 40 in my book. Is PCGS caught in the middle of a depression?

45... I am going for a gold sticker but keeping the 30 grade.

Here is another @jedm Jed that deserved more than it got... also VF30 from PCGS. Your question as to "why" a few of these get less than they deserve grade-wise is a mystery. I remember this VF30 1914-P was graded at the home office when all the senior graders were at the FUN show a number of years ago. Coincidence? Not sure why.

Another that passed through recently, PCGS VF-25...

That's a neat die clash Jeff! Also notice the imprint of the neck feathers below the ear lobe.
@JeffMTampa Totally agree. Bought the '95 as an XF40-ish coin. I will not try to upgrade but have a goal to see if I can get a Gold CAC sticker on it.
Another good-looker... 1905-O BH in PC58 with great color!

@sedulous Hey that's a strong 30 quarter isn't it Tim? Why do you think it didn't go higher?
@paesan Nice looking half Lenny, is it a 25?
Hi Jed,
That one got a VF-30 at pcgs. Wish I could find a few 1909-S dimes with a similar look!
